  • A young woman babysits two British sisters, then discovers something's wrong.
BEFORE SEVEN is used with permission from Ray Sisters. Learn more at raysisters.com.
Sage is a young American woman working in London as a babysitter. She gets called in to watch over two little girls, who are delightful to babysit. But as the day wears into the evening, Sage starts to feel something amiss, as small signs and unreturned messages add up to a more ominous meaning.
But when the girls' parent fails to return at the end of Sage's shift, Sage's protective instincts towards her young charges take over as she attempts to get to the bottom of the looming crisis. But what she discovers is much more surprising than what anyone thought.
Co-directed by Austin and Westin Ray from a script written by Westin, this short drama has a gentle start, as a cheerful, competent Sage enters the world of the little girls she's tasked to watch. Emmeline and Abigail are charming, smart and well-behaved, and Sage herself instantly telegraphs a solicitous warmth and trustworthiness Their mother, however, seems distracted and anxious, but that tension is easily overlooked as Sage spends time with the little girls, making them meals and playing with them.
Together, they make a comfortable bubble of security, and the storytelling luxuriates in this atmosphere, with an eye for sweet details and gestures of care and comfort. Sage and the girls bond together, and it's easy to see why Sage cares for them so much, even though she has just met them. But visually, the film also takes advantage of the cool, slightly alienating modernist feel of the girls' apartment -- one where the high-end range proves befuddling to operate -- with skewed angles that feel slightly "off." Though Emmeline and Abigail are innately sweet, there's something not quite right in the emotional atmosphere of the home.
These and other signs of disquiet creep into the film, skillfully shifting it from a naturalistic portrait of a small ad-hoc family into a subtle mystery full of suspense and uncertainty. As the hour of Sage's shift ending comes and goes and their mother is nowhere to be found, Sage and viewers begin to fill in the pieces. Is the girl's mother having an affair? Has she abandoned the family? What is Sage's moral responsibility in this situation? Sage refuses to abandon the girls, and actor Meaghan Martin -- whom audiences may know from Disney's CAMP ROCK show or from MEAN GIRLS 2 -- deftly plays rock-solid decency and kindness. As the film's moral center, she's what we and the girls hold onto when the truth comes out.
The reveal of BEFORE SEVEN is, in many ways, less salacious than the build-up. But it's also oddly sadder, perhaps hinting at how easy it is to outsource or even eschew the responsibility for children. The fuller backstory begs for a longer narrative treatment, but it would be easy to surmise how easy it is to lose sight of Emmeline and Abigail in the bustle of a busy, grown-up light. But the film also offers a glimpse of what it looks like when children are collectively cared for by a larger community outside the nuclear family. Sage offers a safe place to land for her charges during a tense situation, which is more important than ever when it comes to an increasingly fraught, complex world.

As someone who worked many years as a nanny and babysitter for various families, I loved how this captured the tender and sometimes fleeting connections we make with children. It also confronts the absurdity of our culture, where children are too often entrusted into the hands of almost-strangers. This short film really moved me, thank you.

@@DX-d thanks for your perspective, but I actually would tend to disagree. I once did a one-off sit for two children who's mother left within minutes of my arrival (our first ever meeting). there was a camera installed in the main room we were in, and as soon as I saw it I just felt extremely uncomfortable, like I was being spied on. baring in mind, I was working through an agency (basically just an app) that was not particularly hard to get accepted onto. so I understand why they would have a camera... but to me this didn't ensure that the children's wellbeing was being prioritised at all. this kind of transactional, impersonal situation should just never happen in childcare. it's not the same as getting an uber. plus there were other rooms with no cameras inside the house anyway. needless to say, it wasn't for me, and I never worked through that app again.
what I'm suggesting instead is that a lot of time and care should be taken to get to know the person who looks after your kids, to build a proper foundation of trust. it should be treated like any relationship where there's intimacy and emotional attachment involved: walk slowly into it. too many families are in a rush to sort childcare, which leads to negligence and poor instincts. at best, it just feels gross, like you're part of a staff and not part of the family. at worst, kids are put in harm's way. I have worked for families who take the time to know you as a person and the care is truly mutual. then it's a wonderful job.

That was hilarious. The high paid nanny is "outsourcing" lower paid random babysitters using an app while she goes out to party. I wouldn't be surprised if that actually really happens. I once hired a guy to do painting, and came back and found some homeless people I didn't recognize doing the painting. Apparently he had taken the money, bought a case of beer, and offered it to some homeless men to paint a room in "his" house for a few hours. I was taken aback by this, I paid them cash and never hired the man again.

Unfortunately, where I live in California there's a lot of drug addiction and homelessness, and they wouldn't even arrest the homeless man who set a car on fire in my driveway. If I called the police and said "the painter brought homeless people in to help without my permission and I think they're smoking meth" the police probably would have literally laughed or said something sarcastic about how I was helping the homeless, like they said when they tried to say I was responsible for "allowing" a homeless man to park a car in my driveway that later got set on fire when I tried to press charges. We have had to step over drug needles and passed out homeless people holding needles to get into places like the Chinese Buffet in the last few months. By the way, the "car fire" is actually on my UA-cam channel, you can search for my name and "car set on fire" to find it. And I begged them to arrest the guy and even sent my video to local news reporters and government officials through e-mail and Twitter who completely ignored me. The guy went on to start many more fires and is still walking free, never got arrested once.

I loved seeing the girls interactions with each other but also Sage, they really act like sisters, which they probably r, and there very good at acting like regular kids, like you forget they’re in front of a camera almost, the girl who played Sage was great too, very good with girls, very good person around kids in general, not exactly sure from what but I know her from something, I liked her slight accent too, it was just interesting to me, the conversation with the girls about her accent was cute and interesting and it was just cool to hear certain words and even the way she phrases some of her words was just a cool touch, cuz I’m not sure if the actress actually talks like that so if she doesn’t it was very well done imo, this was a cool short tho, a little upset about the ending but the part when the parents came home was pretty good climax on its own, cuz I didn’t expect that at all, I thought maybe something was up with the kids and Sage was in danger, but no I was way off and I’m glad cuz this was…wow

Oh my... this was so good. The whole time I wishing it was a full length movie and sorry that I knew it would abruptly end. It would be fantastic if there was an "After Seven" made that continues the story. With flashbacks and a clever script, this could be woven into a movie or at least a 45-60 minute story. These child actresses are amazing. Everything flowed so naturally and it would be most interesting to further develop the story! But even if it doesn't, I suppose that was a really interesting place to leave it. We learn something in the final seconds that helps to set one thing straight, so the world of "what ifs" is narrowed slightly.

This happened over 20 years ago. At that time, my older friend friend Sam told me his story of 20 years before that, so 40 plus years ago; dropped off his toddler at his child minder and the boy didn't want to stay. He continued his drive to work but a niggle became an itch, he turned back 20 minutes later. As he pulled up he saw the child minder dragging his little boy and another child out her front door with his arm pulled so high that he thought it would dislocate. She was yanking him so hard that he screamed. Sam ran after them and grabbed his child and took him back home and the week off to find better help. He also waited that evening to catch the other child's parent and warned him about what he'd seen.

Perhaps it represents the abrupt cessation of something we anxiously anticipate (e.g., a lovely dream that we're suddenly awoken from, or an instant death that pre-empted our final goodbyes). The symbolism lies in the reality that we don't always get a conclusion. It seems unfair and grossly disappointing, yet happens all the time.

I replayed the last five minutes to learn everyone's name. Interesting aspect of this cliff-hanger is that we still don't know the real mother's name. We know Jessica passed herself off as "Nicole." We know the baby-sitter is Sage, and the girls are Emmaline and Abigail. Their father is Marcus. Their uncle is Felix, likely the mother's brother. But we still don't know Mum's actual name. Clever addition to a cliff-hanger.

She would hire different babysitters so that she could go out and have a good time with her boyfriend. She hid all the pictures of their father to make it seem like she was a single parent. The nanny was given direct instructions to watch the kids 24 hours a day and was never to leave the kids in the supervision of others. Doors, and windows were to be kept shut and the kids were not allowed to go out on the balcony and be seen by others (afraid of being kidnapped, or something). The nanny knew that she was supposed to be back at the house before 7 which was the time the parents would always return. Of course, the nanny finally got caught and as Donald the clown would say: "You're fired!

What else could treasonable happen and how could that be enjoyable to watch? I think it ended right where it needed to and lacked nothing - there was no cliffhanger.
