I find people usually fear advances in tech or how companies operate but the reality is that populations are increasing and while certain parts of jobs may be phased out, it usually brings about new jobs for 2 or 3 more people. It just means advancing ourselves with tech advances instead of living in the past and reminising about the glory days. I have lots to do each and every day and not having to worry about turning on and off the light is actually a good thing in my opinion.
Great videos, I am finally all caught up thank you for taking time in posting these, I know that it isn't as simple as just recording then uploading these videos, it takes more work to do then that . I am curious as to where does one apply for a lighthouse keepers job I search around found a place and the link redirected me to another site which said that the lighthouse keepers assistant was removed from site, now I am searching again is it possible to get a link to the site I tried Canada coast guards site but nothing shows up .
nice video, keep posting dude, you have a nice niche here , great potential to grow . btw who is flying the drone for you? or you program it to follow a path?
The light is actually quite hard to see in the dark from the shore. The best time to see the light is when there is a lot of fog. You can check my instagram for some pictures of the light in the fog.
Each bulb does come with a warning that you should not touch the glass itself. A quick google search tells me that maybe these are halogen or HID bulbs? I am no expert in this field, I just do as I am told. haha.
Tech is an odd thing. There are LED style lights available but I think that the cost and manpower it would take to change all lights to this new style would not be worth it at this time. Now I am no expert so you can't take my word, but if you consider that those huge incandescent light bulbs of the past were not phased out that long ago (in the grand scheme of things) I think it would still take even longer for such a large operation such as Lights and Bouys to catch up to technology. Hey, we are just getting internet at Lightstations now and it has been a staple of business for what? 20 years? It just happens that sometimes business is a little behind of the current tech.
One of the side benefits of incandescent bulbs is the heat they generate. Not sure the wattage of these bulbs (they are way smaller than I thought, even for a smaller light like the one shown) but often they put enough heat out to melt snow and defog the glass. However, LEDs plus small heaters are still much more efficient, and some LEDs can put out decent heat depending on the size.
When a spot is available it gets posted on the government of canada jobs board. You would need to be a Canadian citizen or resident and would need a marine radio operator certificate. Salaries are $45000 to $75000 depending on station and length of employment and all salaries are posted online somewhere as the job is part of the public sector.
I believe there is to be a switch to LED but there are thousands of lights and bouys along the BC coast. I can't even imagine the job and coordination it would take to make the switch. I am sure it will take time for it to happen.
You would need to check with your country to see if they still have a Lighthouse program. If you want the job in Canada you need to be a Canadian citizen or resident.
Marine Radio Operator certificate is a test you need to do before you are supposed to broadcast on a marine radio. You can get this certificate online, just do a search for marine radio operator certificate.
Thanks, Spence!
Edit: That would be super cool if you could bring some stories or folklores about lighthouses!
I agree
Good call. There is some very interesting things about lightstations on the BC coast out there so good to look into further.
Oh yeah. That would be great. I'd love to hear some of those stories.
Great quality video. Thanks!
Thank you so much.
Automation is always nice when it helps but does not replace people 🤞

You could of showed us what the lights looked liked at dark

Are these lights the same in theatre where they can't be touched on the glass with your hands?
Each bulb does come with a warning that you should not touch the glass itself. A quick google search tells me that maybe these are halogen or HID bulbs? I am no expert in this field, I just do as I am told. haha.
I have so many questions. Are you in the lighthouse 24/7? Are there bathrooms?
haha, yes we do have bathrooms, just like any batroom at home really, buuuuuuuttt they don't quite work the same exactly!
Thanks! I’m surprised the lamps are still incandescent. Have LEDs not come into use for lighthouse beacons? I always enjoy your videos.
