On fabric like the top, to get that "finished" edge on the sleeve, instead of just zig-zaging before cutting, you could zig-zag 1/8" elastic along the sleeve line. Besides giving more of a visual of where to cut, you will also have a more sturdy edge to sew into the armhole.

I sew (yes I serge too) but I also sew 'a lot' with knits and I'm not that skilled, so I spend a ton of time, testing on the scraps. Also they look 'great'!! The frixion pens I own were made for quilters. Any marks I make with them will reappear when the fabric gets freezing cold (the marks do not wash out). However the marks will disappear when you put heat to the marks again. I hope your frixion pens are not the same kind as mine. You look great in your cute outfit.

Love all your alteration videos. You inspire me so much. I bought a pair of gorgeous Elle Tahari pants that were on clearance and a bit too big for me. Just took the waist in at the side seams and although I had to try on and adjust several times, they came out perfect and now I have a great fitting beautiful pair of pants! I love sergering, too! I feel like many creators are getting slack for using a serger since not everyone has access to one, but I love that you always use yours and provide an option if they don't have one.
You have a lot more courage than I have. I would have been afraid that the lace would just disintegrate when I cut it. I watched this because I have some similar pants that I need to hem. I'm having trouble seeing how much shorter they need to be. I was trying to pin them up to see about the length, but the material tends to shift and be uneven.

I also have a favorite small embroidery/sewing scissors - the Gingher lightweight embroidery scissors - and they are a little bit cheaper on Amazon than the Zwilling scissors. They look very similar. When you're basting you can use a different color thread so it's easier to see. Because the basted thread will always be removed. I never thought of that myself but it occurred to me while watching you.
What a cute outfit! That fabric is neither knit nor crochet. It's some kind of lace, maybe knotted, chemical, needle or bobbin lace. If you want to fall down a rabbit hole, just read the article about lace on wikipedia. Instead of pinching the sleeves and marking the fold you could mark your skin where the hem of the sleeve hits your hand, then pull the sleeve up to the desired length and mark your skin again.
I have some knit pants that I absolutely love just pull up no pockets no zippers just an elastic waistband. I want to make some breezy pants. Do I just lay them out and cut around them to make another pair? Do you have a link/video for me?

Could I ask if you would have handled shortening the Sleeve differently if the Shoulders and Neckline already fit? Just wondering if you could have used clear Elastic to stabilize the Knit around the arm width, then removed the 4" and sewed it back together? Maybe removing the excess from just above and below where your Elbow is? BTW, I've got a groovy top with all the same fitting issues. The material is just awesome being made from that Sunburst Pleating. It is so unique. I was waiting for exactly this type of lesson before getting the nerve to cut! Thank Catherine!
Thanks! Yes, I think you could shorten the sleeve from the bottom, and I don't even think you'd need the clear elastic. I think I wold just cut the sleeve an inch or so about the heavy lace detail, raise the lace up, zig zag it back on by following the edge of the lacey design, and then trim off the excess on the front and back. I hope that is fairly clear, lol.

In the seventies, we called these pants bell-bottoms, since the legs are shaped narrow around the thigh and down to around the knee and then flared down to the hem, looking like a bell. Pallazzo pants' legs are evenly wide from top to bottom.

Hi Catherine. I love lace/ eyelet/crochet, etc tops. I am thinking a cream coloured camisole would be more flattering. How difficult would it be to line it? That way you could wear any colour pants and not worry if you had the right colour camisole.

It's like steeking. The way to cut something you've knit. Fasten the edges somehow first, whether by sewing them or crocheting. Then cut after.
Nice, i found a lovely midern light jacket, but its a kittle too big and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make it smaller without ruining it

I would have used a fine 1/8 inch wide ribbon on the sleeves with a zig zag stitch before cutting it.
