    I had one back in the early 90s and rode it hard for maybe 5-6 years then sold it, never did much to it because I rode it in the dirt mostly, now I just bought a 2024 and love it , kinda of funny it’s the same as my older one just different colors, I’ll probably ride this on the street more than dirt but it’s nice to be able to do both, nice ride you have enjoy it and thanks for the video

      Yes there is a reason XR DOSN'T stand for adventure bike, to many
      Add-ons make the bike heavy and
      The 5 gallon top heavy and ugly.
      I've been riding mine for 10 years
      U've got to pump up the horsepower
      Then it gets fun that is the name
      Game with the XR , not suffering
      On around the world adventure.

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks man! Such a fun bikes even stock. I really considered relocating the battery box but to be honest it never bothered me and after moving to a lithium battery, the weight savings would have been very minimal. Not to mention I already had to relocate the Rowe PDM90 power module into the airbox, I was running short on space. That power module for accessories was more important to me than moving the battery also. Cheers!

    • @GamingwithGamerGirls
      @GamingwithGamerGirls 3 роки тому

      I've got a '98 also. Got it from Arizona, so not a speck of rust or corrosion anywhere. 9000 miles on it. I did the smog delete, upgraded gas tank (300 mile range) and installed LED lights and a charging system for my phone. Also, full pannier racks and large aluminum Tusk boxes. Everywhere I go I get compliments and questions about the bike. Everyone loves it.

    @mikenelson189 3 роки тому

    Add a cush hub in the rear. Best mod you can do imo to the xr650l. Makes the gear spread of the wide ratio 5 speed much more doable and you can lug the engine in 5th gear all the way down to 35mph without the motor sounding like it's going to grenade so you don't have to keep the revs up to keep the drive train happy. I put over 25,000 miles on my 650l without a cush hub I probably would have sold that bike after 5000 miles.

    • @hellomynameismikey

    • @mikenelson189
      @mikenelson189 3 роки тому

      @@hellomynameismikey Yeah both the dr650 and the klr650 have cush hubs. It definitely changes how it feels on the road and makes it feel more like a proper road bike instead of a dirt bike on pavement. Like I said it will let you lug the motor way down low and you can cruise around in 5th gear perfectly fine at lower speeds and keeping the bike much quieter with lower revs and not worry about the spline shaft as much. I loved my 650l but know I have a E-start xr400 and I also have a cush rear wheel for that as well because I dual sport it but it's mainly to protect the spline shaft with it being a close ratio 5 speed I can lug the motor and the drive terrain still sounds fine. Go ahead and try to lug your 650l with stock gearing in top gear at 35mph and let me know how it sounds it's not pretty. With a cush hub all those horrific noises disappear. Here is the link. I had a warp9 hub. www.thecyclehouse.com/warp-9-cush-drive-rear-wheel/

    I’m 6’7” 300 lbs and for more dirt trails I feel this would be the better bike before it becomes too heavy in the dirt. I was thinking about the xr650r but I’m pretty sure I’ll get the l first, thoughts?

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  2 роки тому +2

      The R would be a phenomenal choice if you're just sticking to trail and dirt. But the R is also becoming harder and harder to come by. I would stick with the L just so you can take it on the streets easier as well. It's a lot of bike for the buck! Thanks!

    I pick up my 2017 tonight! Looks like you went with the low seat which is what I'm considering. Is that the "gripper" top? Overall thoughts on the seat?

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  3 роки тому +2

      Sorry just saw this. Sick! And yes, this is the gripper top. Honestly I didn’t have a real problem with the stock seat as far as comfort but the foam on this new seat is insanely comfortable! Not to mention that extra inch goes a long way. I have a 30 inch inseam so I need all the help I can get on this bike.

    Sweet bike! Thinking about swapping my motorcycle for an XR, with your set up, would you be comfortable doing long highway rides? Is it burning oil a lot?

    • @WOLFZEIT_
      @WOLFZEIT_ 3 роки тому +3

      Ive got an xr650l also and I have put about 2300 miles on it (4300) total miles and no oil is lost on mine. Key is to just take it easy on the road when internal temps get pretty high. Don’t want to cause extreme temps on the piston rings. I run shell rotella t6 full synthetic extreme temp diesel oil in my bike. Great for cold starts and high running temps. Change the oil frequently and it will be as reliable as a rock.

    How is your header wrap doing? Any color fade or cracking? I live in Oregon so if I apply some I am wondering if it will hold up to the rain and mud.

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  3 роки тому +1

      Wrap is going strong! No real fade or cracking. But I also used a high temp wrap spray on it to keep it darker in color. I’ve also spent plenty of time in rain and mud, I was the bike after every ride, spraying it clean has made a difference I’m sure.

      Absolutely love them. More than just stretching my legs out, they have actually added a ton of protection for bike drops, which sadly I’ve done a lot of on single trials when loaded up. No sub frame support on mine, I mounted them to my steel skid plate and so far so good.

      I did not lower it at all, but the seat replacement I used shaved about an inch off the top. When I have my camp luggage on the extra weight lowers the bike another inch, so I wanted it higher for that extra travel.

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  3 роки тому

      Hey Jeremy, I've not ever tested MPG but I imagine it is somewhere in the 40's. As far as the weight, almost everything I switched out was actually lighter, with the exception of adding the skid plate and luggage rack. Those probably added 10-15lbs. The only real added weight is when the gas tank is topped off. I'm probably pushing to 400lbs with everything included and a full tank. Hope that helps!

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! I did have to modify it, thanks for asking so we can clear that up. All I had to do was take a cheap heat gun and warm up the rear just enough to bend it out of the way. You might not notice as it didn’t take much but this was indeed required.

    What’s your rear sprocket tooth count? I’m running 13/42, and am thinking about jumping up to a 14t front sprocket which is the same as 15/45.

    • @hellomynameismikey
      @hellomynameismikey  3 роки тому

      Currently I am running 15/45. Keep in mind that for every one tooth you add to the front, is equal to adding three teeth in the back. So that would certainly work.
