I think you also need to mention that they should have sufficient room to move about the tank and have room to grow, but overall I totally agree. I have a double filtered 10 gallon that most call 'overstocked', but with the double filtration and weekly water changes, it's all good. Epic looking tank, by the way.

After I got into the fish hobby a couple years later I got my friend into the hobby and he always went for the inch per gallon rule and would always say my tanks were overstocked. I mean he wasn't wrong but all the fish were nice and healthy and lived long happy lives because I had a good filter and the water was very clean. Surprisingly, my pepper and panda always stay together and are always roaming the tank. So the thing about having a minimum of 6 corys doesn't always have to be the case either. Of course gallon gestapo will kill any joy I get and there is one of my comets that either way I will put in a big pond....just the way he swims and his body form, he will be more suited, but the others are much happier than their crap pet store beginnings. But I will try that filtration youre using...my carbon didnt arrive and so its just a sponge and a plant in the filter...will get refund and go for the seachem :)

  • @Barb5001
    @Barb5001 3 роки тому +4

I totally agree that the 1 inch per gallon "rule" is BS
Fist of all, some tanks are so full of substrate, big rocks rock and other things leaving a much reduced water column . So a 15 gallon tank may only hold about 10 gallons of water.
A bit of realty in in order. How much water do you really have?
So what really is over crowding?
Consider that topical fish have now been captive bred for many countless generations and overcrowding in now beginning to be part of their natural habitat.
So, let's not rely on old standards as if they are the gospel truth and just use a bit of common sense and do what really seems to work.
Fact is, the old recommendations were from years ago when regular water changes were not the norm for the average home user ...and we now have better filtration.

I agree with you. BUT always remember that not everyone is going to do the research. Set up can be very expensive. Most are not going to spend the money "on fish" just because I recommend it. Which I do on a daily basis. 1 inch per gal is just a guideline. A guideline that I firmly use because when buying fish, customers want to fill their tank. Forget that they get bigger, forget that this will in turn cause more waste, forget that the fish might not get along as they mature. Their "forgetfulness" obviously is ignorance or laziness, I tend to go with the latter, is why I keep to those guidelines. Not to mention feeding. When a tank is over-popluated it becomes very difficult to feed everyone. That it turn can lead to many issues. Not to mention the types of fish, where they like to swim in the tank (top, middle and bottom). All of those and more are key factors to ensure minimal stress and water quality. I know that there are SO many opinions on this, just remember that when posting these videos, not everyone is an avid enthusiast that have several tanks, belong to aquarists groups or educate themselves daily on the fish world. "Filtration is the Key" is a bad message to send out. You could have four canister filters and you could still have issues. You should do videos on individual topics. For example: Want more fish in your tank? >Who will get along and why. The canister filter>Why I love it. Want more fish in your tank> Top feeders, middle feeders, bottom feeders that will get along. I'm just saying, it's not the only thing that matters as you did point out some in your video, but not all. Your tank is beautiful and rainbow fish are my fav's.

Finally common sense. Its about the filtration, and the plants. Its also the shape of the tank/pond that can make big diff to how your fish feels swimming with other fish. As long as fish can swim, turn, go up, go down, hide, explore in clean water eco system environment, they will be just fine with more than the recommended 'rules'. But, see too many fish experts harassing other stocked tanks and ponds and it takes the joy out of fish keeping.

Thanks a lot for this vid- exactly what I needed- mine is a 2.5g tank with 4 fish- but a powerful overhead lid filter that sucks up almost 90% detritus or poop, kept in middle of hall in my small flat- so mild indirect sunlight or room light & no chance of algae at all- 3 white pebbles on bare bottom of tank with a plastic plant behind the tank so seems simple enough with pothos growing out at the top... People living with restricted space must also get the chance to keep pets...

  • @CanineGrowTime
    @CanineGrowTime 5 років тому +9

The inch per gallon rule can easily be broken with small tropical species like you have and planted tanks like you have. But with BIG fish, these rules cannot be broken so easily. Big fish can't usually be kept in planted tanks like that. They won't leave the plants alone and nothing can grow. Also, not all species produce the same amounts of waste.
I have a 55 gallon that I turned tropical. 1 Blood Parrot, 6 Tiger Barbs, and 3 Cories. The water quality stays good for well over a week even with no live plants (Blood Parrots can't usually be kept with live plants). When I had just TWO goldfish in the same setup, the tank was filthy within a week easily. Goldfish simply produce way more waste than tropicals. That's why I stopped trying to keep them in tanks.
With regards to the inch thing, also people don't calculate adult sizes of fish. The feeder goldfish might be an inch when you get them, but they'll be 7 inches in a year. Get a 60 gallon and put 6 of them in there, you'll have a badly overstocked tank within a few months. AGAIN, these rules are different for fish that don't get large. My Cories won't reach more than 2-3" at most and they're tropicals that don't produce waste like goldfish. The 1 inch rule would probably work fine with them.

I agree that the inch per gallon rule is complete garbage. However, assume you have or like to keep Dovii. Even a 120 gallon wouldn't work in this situation because once the Dovii reaches say 20+ inches it won't matter how much filtration you throw on the tank, because water changes would need to be done daily just to try to keep up with the bioload that one fish produces. Now let's say we "overstock" that 120 with 4 Dovii, it wouldn't end well for the fish at all even if you ran 5 Fx5's on that single tank. Now I know this is an extreme circumstance, but from what you said, newer hobbyist may assume that because what you said it'd be a perfectly fine ms thriving setup. I think adding that the full size of the fish, their comparability with others as well as their needs should be looked at and understood before taking to buying a bunch of fish that have the potential to grow larger than the tanks ability to house them humanly. If not you run into the fish growing deformed and ultimately being very unhealthy, not to mention the extra work in order to maintain a good water parameter. Just adding on is all.

Great tank!! Beautiful fish! Great job!!! I agree that the 1inch per Gallon (or 1cm per litre rule in UK) is not always true. An experienced fish keeper such as yourself will be fine overstocking. Also your plants are healthy and growing so will also act as an additional filter. Also when you over filter you will have more flow which always helps with most plants. Plants are such an important part of keeping a natural aquarium.

I was thinking the same thing Mike. I have a 10 gallon tank with artificial plants, 8 glofish danios, 3 zebra danios and 2 ghost shrimp. The tank was cycled and I had the Tetra Whisper 10 filter but it could not handle the load and my ammonia would constantly rise even with 3 water changes a week. When I picked up a Fluval Aquaclear 30 it was like heaven opened up. The fish were more perky and now I only have to change the water once a week if that. It's all about filtration. Great video, people need to know this.

I know this is an older video, but it's amazing how little things change... I'm astonished that anyone anywhere ever thinks adding extra filtration can be harmful. Maybe if it's a salt water reef tank, but that's a separate issue. My main issue with overstocked tanks is the mulm build up, especially if you're feeding more than only occasionally with a tiny pinch. HIGH FLOW should be discussed, and it's rather important to help reduce mulm build up in such tanks due to greater oxygenation.

It is very, very heavily planted. I leave my light on all day and I don't run my filter.
I do weekly water changes and vaccum my substrate. My parameters are perfect, my water is crystal clear and I don't get any algae.
I think I lucked out and my tank just is in a really good state of balance.

Finally!!!!! Someone who understands tanks!!! Nice job. I have a jammed 90 gallon with everything from schools of ottos to rams to rainbows and nothing less than 5 to 10 of everything in between. Tank is clear, water is perfect, death rate is non existent and yet everyone who sees it talks about it being overstocked first! I run the Fluval 407 and 2 extra large external double bio wheels (4 total) on the back to help gather both low and high floating debris. Any luck breeding the Rams? I do well with the rainbows but nothing with the Rams for at least a year.

Here's my stocking idea. Any friendly advice? Got a 75 gallon FW tank I plan to set up with sand, 300 watt heater, and 2 HOB filters each rated for about 60 gallons I'm guessing. Got the tank and filters used from a family member.
73-74F, 6.5PH, java fern and sand, with 5 golden dojo loaches (yes I know their adult size), 5+ panda cories, 9 odessa barbs, 15+ green neon tetras, and 3 pearl gouramis. So that's roughly a max of (let's say the dojos are 8 inches since they're slow growers) 100 inches of fish in a 75 gallon long with 100+ gallons of filtration with bio sponges and plants.
Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Oh, and has anyone reading this ever used Pothos plants in their aquarium? I hear it's a fast grower and you can just put its roots in an empty half of your HOB filter. I plan to do 3 compartments with bio sponges and 1 with Pothos roots.

  • @kp-gbuniqueinterest

I agree with you man. But I think they say it because its like most ppl who go into the store to start their tanks don't know a lot and don't buy the expensive stuff. I have canister and hobs on all my tanks. Canister is big sponges and bio media, ome of the HOBs has the fine filter floss and purigen. The 2nd HOB is just there to make water movement, use it only for the chemical part like carbon when I need to. But if you have enough plants you don't need to worry. Mine are always 0. I don't even do water changes. I just add water.

I'm a koi keeper and my rule of thumb is similar to aquarium keeping for overstocking.
    Turn over 4-5x per hour.
Design 10x the filtration need of the tank size.
So for me, I built a 3700 gallon pond, but I designed enough bio filtration for a 40000 gallon pond. So I overstock without issues.

I have an overstocked 55 gallon tank. I have a Jack Dempsey, a Convict, a pleco, a firemouth, and 15 mbuna cichlids. Now my ammonia and nitrite always stayed at 0 but Nitrates always soared to up near 180. I had to do 2 water changes a week until I added a 2nd canister filter and the biological media finally caught up. Now my nitrates stay between 5 and never getting above 40 ppm and I do 1 water change a week. I have a fluval 307, a tidal 110 hob and a fluval 407.

Water parameters on that tank were always golden never had any suprises. Ran a 55g hob filter and a hell of alot of plants. I moved with that tank from oregon to San Diego and didnt lose a single fish. Now here I am under stocked, running a high tech tank and I've got algae and ich. Weird stuff

You can also do the opposite of mass filtration. I have a 29 gallon marine tank and only have 9 or 10 inches of fish. I check my levels often and never actually water change. I add freshwater when it needs topping off and knock the salt crusties back in to keep the salt level where it is. Been running it for 3 years. I have cleaners too...shrimp, snails, and emerald crabs. : )

The standard ive always gone with is 5gph per gallon so a turn over rate of 5 times and hour. And that i consixer my bare minimum. For co2 injected tanks i go woth 7gph per gallon and for my turtle tanks i go with a whopping 10gph per gallon.
4 works with lots of plants, but why not go for 5.

    Hey
    I love your aquarium ❗
And you are right, you can overstock your tank as long as your fish stay healthy and happy.
Your fish seem active, yet not aggressive towards each other.
But it's not easy to get to that point. I think the denser you stock your tank the greater the margin for error gets.

I agree with you in the 1 inch per fish rule, What really matters is water quality. And that's where filtration takes a huge part in, but not all of us have planted tanks to get rid of the nitrates. And that's where water changes come in. Its just my opinion, so I could be wrong that for the video. Some people do take this rule of thumbs very serious though

People acting like "rule of thumb" is the same as a rule. It is just a basic general guideline for people to get their bearings when they wonder how many fish can go into a 5 or 10 gallon tank. It is not like that is a principle that must be followed by even the most expert among us.

The fact remains though that it's nonsense as it takes zero account into the level of activity and temperament of a given fish. Will it work for certain fish? I suppose so, but the fact remains that a more aggressive or active fish. A betta fish may be larger than a white skirt tetra, but anyone who has owned both can tell you that a white skirt tetra needs more room than a betta.

    Ok..big question for you.
I’m eyeing off THE most stunning electric blue acaras. In the store atm they are approx 5 - 6 cm big which if they stayed that size then easy leash I could keep 2 in a 50 litre or even 3 in a 60 litre BUT the issue is apparently these super stunning fish can possible grow to about 12 cm ...
Now visually let alone comfort wise the fish would be way to large for a 50 and a 60 litre would still not cut it if they even toy reach that adult size.
When I say stunning, I mean it, I’ve never seen any shop cichlids so friggin bright, shimmery blue n back contrast as these are.
I’m wanting 2 so bad but the online experts say 2 fish at full adult size would need atleast 113 litre...or 30 gallon.
It’s a whole different kettle of fish (ha ha) when ya talk about simply adding say 4 to 6 more fish to a tank when the fish are all small or only 1 to 2 cm...
My only other option would be to buy a larger than 60 litre tank maybe towards 85 litre...there’s no way I’m wanting to buy $ nor keep a 100 litre tank.
Second option, get the 60 litre / 15 gallon tank and go for a similar but mush less although still very pretty fish as the neon blue rams.
    Thoughts please?
Wish I could send ur pics of these acaras..far out they are super amazing

A heavily planted tank will filter the water and keep it clear looking. In my 60 gallon, I have an undergravel filter with a 320gph powerhead and a water polisher with a similar-sized pump. I also have lots of plants. I keep about 70 inches of fish in it. I think an inch of Oscar/pacu makes more waste than an inch of neon tetra or guppy.
