Volcano Hiking Adventure | Kagoshima Sakurajima ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Start your year with -- a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION! Japan's most active volcano is also a great place for lava trail hiking, hot spring bathing and pure adventure.
Where is this magical volcano you ask? It's down on Kyushu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (1,300km from Tokyo) and that ash and fire throwing cone is SAKURAJIMA!
You can get there by ferry in 15 minutes from the city center for a ridiculous 180 yen / $1.50, about 4km across the sea.
Sakurajima is famous for island mikan, much smaller and sweeter than on the mainland. The Sakurajima DAIKON RADISH which can weigh as much as 45kg is also well known. It's the biggest radish in the world. (Are you excited yet?)
If radishes aren't enough, there's that LAVA TRAIL and loads of paths for bicycling. Not far away are sea view onsen baths where you can soak up those minerals and long views across the sea.
The Sakurajima Visitor's Center is the place to start your adventure.
Inside, data on the island's volcanic activity and history is all documented with diagrams and videos. There's also a gift shop with some cool things to buy.
I went in the off season (January) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting. It just means you get the whole place to yourself.
The population on Sakurajima is quite old. I met a 97 year old woman who was walking around just fine. She was half my size but seemed to have twice my energy so I think there's something truly magical about this island. I hope some of that magic rubs off onto you as well.
HOW TO GET THE SAKURAJIMA:
It's a 90-115 minute flight from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita Airport)
or a 7 hour trip on the Shinkansen. Great if you have a JR Rail Pass!
Buses depart regularly from Kagoshima Airport to the city center where you can either grab a taxi to the ferry terminal or a bus from Chuo-Kagoshima Station. It's a short ride.
THE SAKURAJIMA FERRY:
It's 24 hours, departing every 15-20 minutes.
Adults: 180 yen ($1.50)
Child: 90 Yen ($0.75)
Ferry Schedule and Guide: www.city.kagosh...
Try a bowl of udon or soba on board for 480 yen!

wow that honor system, if only the rest of the world could be like that
Just because they have an honor system doesn't mean they don't get stolen once in a while.. Just like anywhere.
magzire I know, if you did that in America, getting robbed is inevitable
They probably would but the fact that in Japan it's common for stuff like that to be placed out shows how hospitable they are compared to other countries.
I have seen this sort of thing on roadsides in Australia for watermelons/Mangoes/Apples
I don't think you really understand rural japan, they don't get stolen, yes, not even once. But in big city is a different story.
'Only in Japan' a show can be made that you enjoy as much as this one. :)
This is like a mini-vacation.
the ending of the video made it feel like it's the end of the series and I dont watch this serie to end. I love these videos to death!!!
I don't have anything against this guy, but does anyone else get a weird feeling when watching this guy? He just seems very enthusiastic and happy in a strange way. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. Again, nothing against the guy, I like his material and content, just feel weird about it.
those daikon merch are so cute!
John can you do more stuff on Sentos? I find your takes on these places FASCINATING man!
I don't know if you are gonna see this comment John, but your videos helped made my trip during summer 2016 to Japan really enjoyable. From visiting Tokyo to Hiroshima, your videos help pinpoint my needs and made my experiences more deeper and meaningful. Also, how long did it take you to learn to speak Japanese? I am currently trying to self teach myself and hoping it would payoff the next time I travel to the land of the rising sun.
Where are u john? lol
Love the shows man keep it up.
I'm going to japan soon , these videos really help me plan, thanks for the great work!
can you go visit the Kuril islands next? it has become a hot topic recently. Perhaps interview with the locals and ask them whether they think they're Japanese or Russian would be great.
wow ! Super keep going
Love your videos, keep them coming thanks~~
You made my day, John. Thanks.
mr john all the best for the new year my friend, steal watching ur videos steal enjoying them... keep up the good work as always 👍👍
john prouzos Happy New Year!! Thanks for watching! -John
Hey, i have a request:
I'd like to visit Japan, make a tour. In that tour I'd love to eat as much typical Japanese food as possible. (Really a fan of your food related videos :D)
Therefore i would like to ask you, if you might think about making a Vegetarian food in Japan Video.
All japanese people tell me is: "There isn't a lot".
Make longer videos!!! 10 minutes is to short, you could have showed us little bit of the city and more of the trail around the volcano!!!
Hey i would love to see something about japanese beer. Mostly only have Saporo here in the states and when i can i get it. I think it would be cool to see what other beers and types of beers they have in Japan
4:40 you forgot the first rule of hitchhiker guide man... hahahhahahha
yes.
That is interesting.
Love the series, John!
GOSH i love a new video....
very nice video
Where did you get a that guy with the nifty voice on your intro? He has a very professional sounding voice saying "only in Japan" in a deep voice. Did you have to hire someone professionally with that voice or did you or a friend record it yourselves? Thanks in advance for your reply!
wow mac demarco goes to japan
Hi i just wanted to know if u would ever do a video about toku like super sentai or kamen rider etc?
i was wondering if u can suggest some great places to stay what hotel or something like a bed n breakfast. Im planning on a trip later in the fall and this will be my fisrt time ever visiting Japan
I like your food videos can you make more??????
Legoboy Cheng I like to focus on a lot of different things but there is usually food involved somewhere in almost every episode!
It's ONLY in JAPAN, not ONLY FOOD :) hehe but food is a massive reason to visit Japan so you'll see a lot more of it!! Woohoo! -John
Ccccccuuuuuttttteeeee!
HI john, i am coming to tokyo on early feb. Could you let me stay at your place thanks (worth a shot)
2:00 what's the music? (though probably stock)
AM I EARLY???? DID YOU SAY NO??????
I did not know volcanoes create lightning clouds
come to the Hiroshima A-bomb dome!!!!
maybe you need drone in this ep...so we can see more... :)
dedi harrisma I wish I could afford one! It took a chunk out of my budget to travel here for a few days to make the ibusuki send bath video so I had to make more content to justify the costs. If I can raise enough on Patreon and other means, I'm going to update the video opening and equipment :) then you'll see some more cool shots! -John
Hi John!
Anh Nguyen Hi Anh!
That filthy frank beat tho lmao
/MyFoundTemple\ ever heard of samples it doesnt mean its filthy franks
Orachi I fucking know it's cause it's a beat so familiar based around him and I don't know the name of the sample so i just called it that
Can you do a video of karate or martial arts please?
Prophecy Plays it would probably be a video of some dude kicking my arse! Haha
But yes, I think it would be a great idea to do one on martial arts. I tried one on Spochan last year that wasn't so popular, air swords or air kendo. I got beat by Aoi from the ice cream episode again! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll see what I can do. I've got friends who do CHANBARA for the cinema here and may focus an episode on that shortly. -John
I ,,, I've subscribed to a good station, please.
What are mikans!?
3:17 how to take a video walk without shaking
Love the videos! Just showed them to my mom over holiday and she was confused.
"Wait? This is on UA-cam? This seems like a travel channel show?"
You've got another fan now! We easily watched 25% of your library in a week. I definitely plan on visiting some of the places you mention on my honeymoon. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
I love this channel because I love learning about the different thing in Japan.
S Kent same

2:37 that's one of the reasons because i love Japan.... honesty
yep, those money cans would be stolen within an hour where I live..
GTR Best humans ever
Ikr if that was in London there would be no money in the jar. 😂😂😂😂😂 and everything gone. Really japanese people have faith in others.
@@dietcoke759 forget the money cans they would steal the produce and sell them in the bazaar where i live.
I love how all Japan islands, villages and land remind of Pokémon regions.
I constantly thought about pokemon sapphire/emerald/ruby/ORAS
Eheh. I get that I love it too and on a second thought my comment is wrong. It is not Japan that reminds Pokémon but the other way around! :)
Ok, one last question here for ya (sorry for the inquisition). You said that island of Sakurajima itself has 4,500 residents. In the event of a major eruption, I'm assuming they have a well-planned evacuation in place... Would everyone board those ferries to the main land? How many people can one of those ferries hold (it looks pretty big). Thanks so much, John! :-)
FireCracker3240 after the 1914 eruption, the island became a peninsula so along with the ferry, there is a road leading away, just the opposite direction of the city. Back in that eruption, the residents knew it would erupt from the constant earthquakes so there were few deaths. 1914 was a big one! -John
Thanks for the information. That makes sense. I'm glad they haven't had a big eruption in over 100 years. Good to know big eruptions are not common.
FireCracker3240 yes, that is good, but believe it or not, there was one a few days AFTER I filmed this!! I was a few days too early to film it. I think there's some video of it on UA-cam. FEBRUARY 5, 2016
I was here at the end of January 2015 to shoot this if I remember correctly!! Then went to the Sapporo Snow Festival. A lot of traveling last year!! -J
+ONLY in JAPAN That's unreal, you missed it by a few days! After reading this comment, I went and watched that video from February 2016 and my gosh, what incredible footage! I don't know if I ever knew that there could be lightning during a volcanic eruption. It was beautiful and scary all at the same time.
I love the irony of how you went from location of a hot, active volcano to the snow festival. ;-) Do you imagine you'll do that much traveling in 2017?
dude helicopter boats bumass
素晴らしいです、英語分かりませんが、画面に変化があって、最後まで楽しく見れました。
Great videos John,
When I watch ONLY in JAPAN I get completely immersed. It's as if my room fades away and I get to visit Japan for a little while. You have a wholesome manner that makes it impossible to be distracted by an internal dialogue of judgment; it really allows me to subconsciously trust you with my attention.
John, do a video on Touge racing 👍👍
I'm from Kagoshima. Ferry's Udon is very good, isn't it?
You would never see people leaving their produce just on the side of the street. Japan is so trusting and I appreciate that about the country
Agree totally !
It's a freaking Lightning Volcano! 😧
What a great episode! Japan really does have it all. Volcanoes, desert, beaches, snowy mountains... a land of literally everything you can want or need. Another reason to love the country. Thanks, John. I can't wait to see what's next! :-)
I know it was just a small part of this video but the honour system in Japan is incredible.
What great views!!!! And that foot bath?!?! yes please
So which country has no honour system ? I will avoid going there. Thank you.
I live in Kagoshima. Sakurajima is pretty impressive to look at during an eruption. Ash in the city... well that part sucks but it's usually only in summer when winds come our way.
Sakurajima hasn't been an island for over 100 years though it's easy enough to say island.
Cycling: The road from the ferry port around the south side can be quite busy. The road isn't wide and there are no sidewalks most of the way. I've cycled Sakurajima a few times. There are hills but people of average health should be fine..
Eruptions: the sign at the visitors centre actually showed 737 eruptions the previous year. Crazy thing is that we see eruptions all the time that apparently don't meet the requirements even though they are 500+ metres.
Hi Wendy, are you a japanese ?
2:46 Ok wait.. what if somebody doesn't pay for it?
Hi Jack nothing i guess
Hi Jack they farmer will hunt them down nd prob throw them in the volcano
Hi Jack they farmer will hunt them down nd prob throw them in the volcano
Hi Jack. the ninjas are watching disguised as trees.
The Farmer will Pray for you and carry on..
Welcome to Kyushu again, John.
You can come our Oita where is an insipid place if you please.
再びようこそ九州へ。
気が向いたら、我らのしょぼい大分にもお越しくださいね。
These videos are always filmed and edited perfectly! I haven't been to Japan, but it's a dream of mine, so thank you John for showing us all the magic that the country has to offer.
Austin Skoglund my pleasure and I truly hope you can make it here someday soon! -J
Thank you john daub your videos are an excuse from doing my homework
best youtube channel about japan
I hope you pay for those fruits.
I put in the "pay here" note with arrow and register bell sound after paying in the beginning so people knew I did that :P ... and so the farmer (if he or she watches this, if they have an internet connection) would remember too! Paid in full. -john
Sorry, I just went back too the video and found you paying it. My miss take. ;)
lgpaintball haha!! I watched it after my first edit and forget I'd paid too. I should have done that JUST BEFORE I said honor system, that's Japan -- but when it's just you and a tripod on trips, it's hard to remember everything and reflect on that stuff. Only in post production editing did I realize -- darn! I should have done that a little differently. Some inside story for you. -J
Hahaha Thanks you
Try them "honor system" in my country, you won't even see the basket nor the chair one hour later.
Where are you from ? Which country ? Let us know.
pls visit and make video of naruto museum in osaka
4:06 NO WAY I WENT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if such mikan stands were in korea their owners will be bankrupt.
Move to Japan if possible.
こんにちは John Daubさん!ぜひ愛知県犬山市にある博物館明治村、犬山城に訪れてみてはいかがでしょうか?
Hello John Daub! Why do not you visit to Meiji-mura and Inuyama Castle in Inuyama-city, Aichi Prefecture?
Kind, Humble, Honest, Safe. I have always admired Japan 4 these overall qualities.
Good upload. Thank you & GOD bless
It's so funny because last week I red an article about sakurajima and I was like 'I really want to go' and now you just uploaded a video about it ! I made me want to go even more !
Hi from Australia John. Love watching your videos. Hope you keep making great videos and have a great 2017!
A boy and his Radish.! what lovely video!!! heartwarming!!
Mikan are sooo good... so delicate and delicious.... just like the winter potato in Tokyo
Thanks again John!
When I was there in 1968 the volcano was not jet connected to the island, that thing is growing fast.
Hi Grandpa ! How old are you now ?
@@mr.robinson7083 I just turned 19 when I was there, I'm 72 now and yes I'm a grandpa, I have 5 children and so far 8 grand children. I never thought I wanted to grow old but there are some benefits that come with it, the greatest one is family. I hope you also have a good life.🌋
I have now watched all your vlogs and now wait with anticipation for each new one. Make many, I enjoy them all. Japan is such a fantastic place.
What a beautiful island. The lava path is gorgeous with it's black sands and boulders. Does sitting on the boulders leave your pants black too? ;-)
Also, I love how the basket of mikans sit along the path as well. It's so nice to see that the honor system still exists in some parts of the world. How wonderfully old fashioned, in the very best sense. ❤
mt fuji exploration video maybe ?
Duuuuude I saw the Instagram post on this Vid I was waiting for it ! This is awesome you are giving me more ideas when I go back
Haha! I remember your post on Instagram! Here it is! Planning and filming the next few episodes now. Off to Kansai -- and beyond! Happy New Year. -john
I saw that posting too! I was like "Ohh, he's doing teaser/trailers now. How fun!" LOL!
ONLY in JAPAN Hey John thanks to your videos I Got some friends from Dallas Texas enjoying Japan as we speak I'll probably be back Next year I hear Nagasaki is soo different and my wife and I want to visit some friends in Fukuoka and Okinawa お疲れ様でした
ONLY IN JAPAN, PLEASE HELP ME!! Could you make a video in which you set a rank for the top 10 places to visit on japan during february, or something on those line? arigatou
More Kyushu stuff please!
Can you do a video about cicadas and beetles in Japan? I know catching them is popular activity that kids do in the summer. Thanks!
With all the potential geothermal energy available, I wonder why Japan ever resorted to nuclear power. True, they would have to criss-cross the island with lots of high voltage transmission lines.
Speaking of volcanoes, have you ever done a video climbing Mt. Fuji? (Well maybe not exactly climbing, I know there is a trail you can take to near the summit. Many people make the trek at night, and it takes almost all night too!)
I have a feeling cinnibar island from Pokémon blue red green and yellow were based off this place. As well as lavaridge town in ruby sapphire and emerald
Am I the only one who thought of the Radish Spirit from Spirited Away when those big ass radishes were featured? 😂
man this youtube channel Should be Part of a Tv-show
Technically speaking Sakurajima isn't an island anymore after 1914 eruption of the vocalno.
Thanks for sharing! And Happy New Year! May you have a happy and wonderful one! =)
Only In Japan is an appropriate title of your blog John, the honor system is an excellent example. Imagine trying that in America? By the way when I was a child, bicycles weren't locked at train stations, is that so today?
生まれ故郷なので、久しぶりに桜島を観れて感動しました!ありがとう!!
I dont know what it is, but this country does not look threatening at all. I feel safe being there, like i wont get mugged or shot or stabbed or killed. In the U.S, i cant say that at all. As soon as i step outside, its every man for himself. Would love to see the day U.S is as safe looking as this. Maybe one day i'll have the opportunity to go here. Looks fun and very cultural.
Have you ever done a video about Fukuoka and its food?
Since you taught English in Japan, would you please report topics like foreigners working in Japan?
Hay guys I'm planing a trip to Japan and have no idea where to go or how to get good prices on flights and hotels. Does anyone know a place where I can ask these questions? Thanks for any help!
i love japanese discipline. you dont see this in malaysia. those mikan and $$ will be missing in 5mins when left without supervision. this i can assure you!!!!
Ive been to kagoshima that was long time ago 1983 i know sakurajima and i also expirience what we call black rain hahaha! and quake also.
Another high quality video as usual John. I'll gladly sit thru an ad for you.
They have honesty box systems in parts of the uk. Rural places... and even rural tourist towns. But def not in any town or city.
How about making rest places of highway in japan. There, people can enjoy good foods as well as at normal ways.
I hope to watch the episode on Okinawa. I was there in the 80s for two years. I loved Okinawa!
Man you need to post your videos more often. I love your videos!!! Great work
The face you male when your boyfriend John uploads an OIJ video. (*__*)
Great video. Do you know of any tours that cover your steps. Loved everything you did in this video, but cant find a tour that covers it.
If that radish had a face it would be like the movie Castaway, WILSSONNNN!
