And 2009 was still paradise compared to the 20th century. Even in the early to mid 90s, one of the fastest ways to get declared persona non grata was to come out of the gay closet (especially if you were male). And the Matthew Shephard murder was in 1998.

Sad thing is that they're teaching LGBT history in schools now

@Karla Smith, I have questioned the Catholic faith for years. People have told me that it's not right to judge them all by what a few have done, but you hear more & more of it happening every day. I don't understand why people WANT TO be gay & try to force others to accept it & I don't understand why people WANT TO have sexual relationships with children instead of someone their own age. Now, people are starting to tell me about things happening within the Lutheran faith concerning forcing little kids to get a sex change. I think that we're at the End Times & it's just going to get worse & worse. I know that I used to dread when my last days came, but now I actually look forward to it to escape this insanity!!!!!

@@tracer740 It's possible and I am sure and you know that you hear about pedophiles tend to molest boys and girls whether it's within the convent or outside of it. What sickens me is that people quote scriptures that homosexuality is wrong and blah blah and also stating that we shouldn't judge each other but yet according to the Big Word of The Bible there's judgment from beginning to end. I know some people will disagree with my opinions on my comment however I am entitled to have my opinion as well as them. So therefore I believe taking advantage of a child for your own sick behavior and portray yourself as a person of God or religion as well as outside you deserve to rot in Hell or somewhere where they don't reoffend to anyone else. Better yet they should suffer the consequences for what they did or attempt to do with the innocent.

An actor or actress who is talented enough to make me believe the persona they are playing can be gay or heterosexual and I will still like and respect them. Why should gays have to pretend to be what they are not? Live and let live.

    • @usfanlovesjiwoo1978
      @usfanlovesjiwoo1978 5 років тому +3

Because if the actor is a open gay he can not sell the part. No matter how talented, it is in the back of peoples minds that this guy isn't even into women. They can't separate the two. And the majority do feel this way. They can accept a married actor in a love scene but not a gay one.

This documentary is a bit wrong about the firing of William Haynes. What actually happened was that Louis B. Mayer called Haynes into a meeting and told him that he had to either to dump his lover (Jimmy Shields) and marry a woman, or get canned. Haynes famously retorted that he would give up Jimmy as long as Mayer divorced his own wife in turn. When Mayer forced the ultimatum, Haynes chose love over his acting career. Haynes and Shields spent the rest of their lives together.

    • @ItsFazsha
      @ItsFazsha 5 років тому +11

To be clear, though he didn't know it at the time, Mayer was ultimately proven right about Shields being bad for Haines, though it took decades to prove. Shields was a child molester. While Mayer fired Haines in 1933, in 1936 Shields had been arrested for molesting a 6 yr old boy named Jimmy Walker. The charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence, but per the book "Golden Images"by Eve Golden, p. 47, Golden states an adult Jimmy Walker, then age 67, in 1988 told author William J. Mann for his Haines biography "Wisecracker" that Shields had indeed fellated him in 1936; the mob was right.

DJ Trevi no one said lgbtqia actors can't play heteros or cis people. My comment was sarcastic.
Also, it's harder to be lgbtqia in the acting field. The funny thing about the gay actors you mentioned is that most of them were successful before coming out as gay because they knew that being openly gay would have impeded their ability to get roles. They were only able to be openly gay later in their acting career because they had already established themselves before as a hetero actor.

      Milk Boy
Rock Hudson was gay and was believe to be straight in his acting and countless others. The only difference the public saw masculinity projected not the stero typing behaviors manifested. once labels are place upon people acting in movies or music idols or in the mainstream the masses are brainwash.
Straight people acting gay in movies are more believable and can go back to being label as a straight actor yes . I do you not know that the actor maybe Bi-sexual undercover so again Labels.

Their priesthood is invalid since the Vatican II sect promulgated the invalid Mass and all the sacraments except baptism ( if correct matter and form are used) and marriage. V2 sect isn’t remotely Catholic. Traditional Catholics hold true Catholic teaching and have left Romes churches/parishes and Mass etc. In fact, the last 5 claimants to the papacy were anti popes and Bergoglio isn’t even a valid priest let alone a true Pope. Rome is a lay entity today.

When the Reubens story broke I was totally accepting, having watched Pee Wee’s videos. The only thing I cared about was seeing many Hollywood celebs standing up for him; that pleased me greatly. I was surprised about Rock Hudson as I was young and didn’t have a clue, but it didn’t matter; I still loved McMillan & Wife and found him sexy. I’d had the hots for Richard Chamberlain since Dr Kildare (reruns?) and loved him in Shogun, so that was a bit harder but not a big deal. I have a gay brother and LGBT+ friends of both sexes since high school. Hollywood? For goodness sake: they’re *actors!*

My moms favourite movie was Pillow Talk with Rock Hudson. I knew that he was gay, but my mother was a fanatical pentecostal, and you should have seen the look on her face when I told her. Priceless, that's the only way to describe it, my sister and I were adopted, and our parents were 49 and 50 when they adopted us. I've always had a good sense of gay, straight or curious because I was bisexual myself. I announced it to my family when I was pregnant again, and at Thanksgiving dinner none the less. Talk about hell breaking loose! My mother cried and said that I was going to hell, my oldest sister screamed at me, and my twin sister and dad just sat there and laughed at everyone else's response. Thank goodness for dad's and twins, they always have your back. I don't get the whole Hollywood thing, so what is the big deal? Whatever, I don't even think Hollywood can figure out Hollywood? Why should I try.

Watching this, makes me realize just how much has changed in the last 20 - 30 years. This looks like a documentary from the 1990s and they go on and on about how Hollywood wants to protect its reputation by not allowing actors and actresses to share too much of their personal lives. And all I can think of is "Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok, UA-cam" and so on. All the social media we have today have brought us closer to celebrities than ever before, those same celebrities are actively sharing their lives on those platforms to be closer to fans and connect to them. In this documentary, they talk about how the audience wants to be able to hold on to the fantasy they've built up in their head about those stars, nowadays we just download the films right after watching an Instagram video the leading role just posted.

+jane a sinner I can't speak for all of them. But generally those statements are due to a combination of language at the time and sexual acts. Specifically, there is known accounts of people who died that engaged in sex acts with people of the same sex. However, identifying as gay or bi or homosexual are terms only invented in the 20th century. The thing with sexuality is that it is based on personal identification. A gay man isn't straight because he had sex with a woman and a straight man isn't gay just because he had sex with a man. Sexuality gets blurry in these places of ambiguity. Generally these people say "probably" because of the known accounts, but its hard to say exactly how they identified or wanted given the time period.

It’s terrible how he gets treated by some people. The worst is by Catholic people who claim to love everyone and always care about all people. I was Catholic until I became pregnant at 22 and decided I was not a fan of the bias of the Catholic religion! I choose to teach my kids the Ten Commandments and to love and honor GOD but you don’t have to be Catholic or in the church to do that! Now I’m a disabled widow who was 6 months from our 20year anniversary when my husband died from complications from colon cancer 4 years ago. I still feel married and I’m content with that! He was the love of my life the father of my 2 kids and is irreplaceable in my heart! God bless everyone and please just try to do one thing to help our world and it’s pretty easy. Just treat everyone you come in contact with like you would want them to treat you!! That’s it......

Viewing this in early 2018, I often thought of Neil Patrick Harris whose performance in "How I Met Your Mother" cracked, at the very least, the problem of an openly gay actor playing a str8 character, "Call Me By Your Name" won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screen Play, and other recent emblems of progress though, in Hollywood, such progress still trails that in the general society. By that I mean Hollywood still treats homosexuality as a startling variation, a problem to be handled, a titillation for str8 audiences.

So your delusions of "addiction" don't square with what people actually experience. You probably had to "choose" being straight, I'm guessing, you sound like a person with unresolved issues, maybe puritanical parents who wouldn't accept you the way you are? The sooner you face the actual problem instead of trying to project your problems onto others who don't want or need your help, the sooner the pain will go away. I know it's hard. Poor thing.

What I’ve always found rather hypocritical in our society is that, for some reason, men have no problem when it comes to two women together…they think about it…they fantasize about it…just take a look at the pornography that’s out there, it’s as normal as anything sexually related…but when it’s two men…oh…for some reason, THAT’S totally different. And while I’m not gonna get too graphical here, there are things that men do with women that some men don’t think a thing about, but, again, when it’s two men…that’s TOTALLY different! Sorry, but it's not!
I also think that some people, especially the highly religious groups and some men in general are a little TOO obsessed with the subject. It’s like it’s their life’s duty to involve themselves in other people’s sex lives. One wonders why they ARE so obsessed! And that goes for everybody's sex life, not just gay people!
I also think that some men are totally freaked out about the whole subject too. They’re afraid of something, that’s for damn sure! Insecurity, especially sexual insecurity comes to mind immediately, but none-the-less, there IS something that frightens a lot of men out there…something they’re very uneasy about, something they’re scared of and that something might just be that they’re afraid of being called, labeled or presumed to be gay…or simply bi-sexual. The problem is, the more they protest against it, the more the bring attention to themselves while they're doing so and they, without probably realizing it, attach themselves too much to the subject. We all remember that old expression:
“Me thinks thou doth protest too much!” Of course, there's always another one..."The dog who barks loudest is the one who's scared the most."
Well…whatever, there are still some of us who would really like to know…why ARE some people so obsessed with this issue? And why are they always the first to bring it up…even when it doesn’t apply to something? They’re not helpin’ their cause any, that’s for sure!
“Oh yeah, that’s Bob…he’s always makin’ some negative point or nasty remarks about some gay person…hmmm…I wonder if Bob is really gay and he’s just tryin’ to deflect the subject away from himself. Boy, he sure talks about it a lot though…hmmm…

I'm confused, did someone force Cary Grant to marry 4 more women and have a child??? He could've remained single and done what he wanted on the down low.
I disagree with the women who said that women want to imagine that a male star is in love with them. It's a more vague idea of the type of man in the story, that they wish they could meet. Women are in love with the FEELING that a movie gives them about what is possible...hope.
Most women would be HORRIFIED, if they married a man, believed in him and then found out he was gay... I would run directly and get tested, and then I would get a separate bed, bedroom and lock the door, until I figured out how best to get out of there!

And who says that if you are not married, then you are homosexual? There are men who abstain from sex due to depression, or impotence, or maybe they decided to be celibate because they have adopted a certain spiritual path, or devoted themselves to yoga and meditation and hence does cannot fully dedicate their energy toward a woman, etc. Why are such dedicated people as westerners so narrow-minded, while people in India understand that there can be hermits even living in caves, or gurus who have channeled all their sexual energy upwards. back then it was much easier for a gay actor to get away with it on screen. more protection and the audience was more innocent. rock Hudson is so awkward with women!

Not at all homophobic. Had a gay friend who was more thoughtful, more caring to my elderly relative who lived in another state. Better to her than her own close relatives after they got her money. However the studios would have been shocked, outraged, had they known that years ago (I was 18...didn't know about gay life at all!) in a Hollywood theatre on Hollywood Blvd. My date came out of the rest room and said, can you imagine who's in there trying to pick up guys? Rock Hudson. Taking such chances so foolishly. At least try to be discreet - back in those days...1954!

Cary Grant was an incredibly good looking guy. He was my Old Hollywood crush. It’s a shame he wasn’t into women.

I think at least half of the real problem back then was they wanted to see him as completely asexual. Once he became an actually sexual - let alone gay - person in the public eye he was considered unfit to be a children's entertainer. From what I recall of the publicity at the time, the focus was on public lewdness and his markedly scruffy appearance in his mugshot. The gay thing only became a big deal later (particularly with the second accusation). He was, quite simply, witch-hunted.

Who cares whether or not "Pee Wee Hermam" was gay?

    • @franco634

Joe free Pee wee Herman rocked. As a kid I loved him and loved his show. You are correct that most adults knew he was most likely gay but no one really knew for sure. The hit they did on him was clearly intentional and was meant to ruin his career. For a while they succeeded but he came back in spite of it. It is sad what people do to each other. For what really? He wasn't hurting anyone and while to some what he was doing seemed offensive, it is what men and women do every day. He wasn't in some mainstream movie theatre watching a flick among families. He was in the back of an adult movie theatre and probably dozens of other men sitting there doing the same thing. Not a place I would want to be but why would the cops want to be there either? Live and let live is my motto. If it isn't hurting anyone leave it be. Have a great day! Go get rid of some stress. LOL

What is wrong with a gay man playing a straight role in a leading part of a movie? Don't people forget that acting is all about pretend and just actors playing parts? Hollywood wants to show its diverse with actors taking on interesting and challenging roles, yet won't let gay actors/actresses take them on
