  • This is a review and demonstration of the new Jane Davenport Mermaid Markers from her mixed media line with American Crafts sold at Micheal's craft stores. In this review I will show you the colors, how they work, unique properties and compare the quality of these markers with other similar products.
This set is on sale on amazon now for $30! amzn.to/2lfrAgG
Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored review, I purchased these items myself and I was not asked or compensated to create this review. My opinions are my own and are not endorsed by American crafts or any affiliated parties.
The product I am reviewing are the Mermaid markers from American Crafts sold exclusively in the US by Micheal's: www.michaels.co...
    Price: $39.99 (I used a 40% off coupon and paid $22)
Description: A waterbrush pen filled with non-lightfast water based ink. *The pen looks identical to the small round Prima waterbrush with the addition of a straw inside the barrel.
    Pros:
The brush has a sharp fine point and is very springy and firm. Very expressive
Bright inks, they will all lift a bit but some solors stain and lead to intersting effects, you might life a purple and have a pink stain left behind. The ink also reacts to water leaving cool water spotting when you spatter water on a painted background.
Pens are refillable with any liquid watercolor (not pigment) or ink.
    Cons:
Colors will fade if exposed to light long term
This can be a wild and messy product (I love that!) so if you like neat, controlled markers this might not be for you.
Colors are bright and tropical, you will need to mix colors to create subdued looks.
Bottom line: Personally I love them, I am glad I bought them and I have been having a ball creating with them in my sketchbook. Because the are not lightfast I recommend working in a sketchbook and if you make something you really like than scan or photograph it for postarity.
If you like the idea of these pens but want a pigment watercolor that won't fade as readily try the Bienfang watercolor brush pens: shrsl.com/?g2rs They are cheaper (retail) and claim not to fade, keep in mind the heavier pigment particles may make them more likely to clog. The brush tip on these is softer than the Mermaid Markers. *This is an affiliate link and I earn a small commission if you purchase anything at Blitsy after clicking, but it doesn't cost you anything extra.

Really like how the flowers turned out but that pineapple! OMG!! Loved it!! Every time you demo a product I can never figure out if it's the product that makes me want to rush right out and buy it or because you're just one of those people who could make an etch-a-sketch drawing look like a masterpiece. :)

Thank you for the review! I almost bought them and then held back bc I have the entire set of Tombow dual brush markers, but I wish I would've gotten them now bc both of the Michael's nearby are sold out (and one store looked like a tornado hit the Jane Davenport end cap and there was so much merchandise empty!). It's great it's a popular item but I wish I would've grabbed the neutral palette and these markers! I did a review on the brights palette and fell in love with the colors. I really feel like there is something special about this line of products and that a lot of care went into the quality control. As always, I appreciate your reviews for how thorough and detailed you are! ❤🎨❤

Lindsay, I can't thank you enough for taking time out of your life to educate people you don't even know!!!! And then you apologize for the video being long - you're too funny! You saved me money and helped me make a decision. I didn't know what to buy before seeing your video. Thank you SOOOOOO much!!!! (I already own all 3 prima w/c sets AND a 60 color set of Zigs, etc, etc) YOU REALLY DO ROCK!!!!

I always love your work, but something about this angel just totally captivated me! I really, really love it! I am in the process of watching the weeping angel, and I like it, too, but this one is my favorite. I can't tell you how much you inspire me to try something I didn't think I was capable of. Thanks so much, Lindsay!!!

Lindsay thankyou for the review on the brush markers. I love how you show and test products for us, keep on painting! I live in Sydney, the postage from America is quite expensive but sometimes items from America are available at the craft shows for a reasonable price, we just have to wait for them to arrive. Thanks again.

FunctionofLight One I knew Mrs W's stamping videos for several years but I hadn't watched much watercolour as I mostly painted acrylic until about a year ago when I stopped using acrylic just out of time issue so I began doing more watercolour and I saw the thumbnail of that video and was gobsmacked by it. Try as I might, I can't reproduce it.

I know what you meant about the Zig pens.......I have a very light more precise, controlled type, touch style with my painting where as my daughter is very "heavy handed" and loose with her strokes so she doesn't have as much control with them. You're right though. I think it just depends on your style of painting......I can't wait to get my hands on these Mermaid Pens as well as the neutral watercolors of hers......these look so fun!! Thank so much for sharing the fun with us..........

I just bought 3 sets of them! I waited a year, while buying other supplies I needed, but these are in my permanent arsenal. I am not concerned with lightfastness. I love the loose brush effects and how versatile they are. They are not watercolors though, so I also got the brights. You can always mix neutrals.

I was sad when I thought these might be yet another art product only available in the US, but I called the Michaels closest to me here in Canada and they do actually have the Jane Davenport line! The Mermaid Markers are $45 CDN and reasonable in comparison to the US price, esp. with a 50% off coupon lol, but unfortunately they're currently sold out. But I can't wait to get my hands on them when they're back in stock. What excites me the most is that they're refillable and I just ordered a set of liquid watercolours that I can use once they're empty.

I got 2 sets of all her watercolor markers... mainly because it went from 39.99 to 14.99 during the holiday season... the smaller packs I can’t remember what I paid as it was under 10 bucks... but there was 4 different packs with multiple different colors... I love the galaxy metallics and the gold, silver, and 2 other colors in another pack, then the big pack with all main colors and then a pastel set... it was awesome and I was able to get all of them for under $100 bucks... having them on sale is probably the only reason I got them as I have all the tombow markers and the eco line watercolor markers. I absolutely love how you use them... I do a bit more detailed work with them. But the layering is awesome... I do prefer to use the tombows for detailed art and a more abstract look with Jane Davenports brush markers..

Great video Lindsay! 😆 I am definitely happy that I got these for $16. 😉 I think I will swatch them out tonight. I have another set of waterbrush markers (similar) that I got a long time ago that claim to be lightfast. I can't think of the name right now...I believe it's German. I need to swatch those too and see how they compare. If I remember right, those also say you can refill them. They also are a set of either 9 or 11 colors with an extra clear waterbrush for blending.

I appreciate the thorough review! TFS and taking the time to make the video! PS I have a few wink of Stella pens and I have not been able to get them to do anything but leak and blob out ink! I got them on clearance so at least I didn't pay full price!

oh no! You don't need to squeese the Winks, just once to get the ink moving and then just use them like a marker.

Thanks so much for the his review. I love the loose style of this painting. Could you do more live loose paintings like this please?

Would love to see the angel and pineapple tutorial. This was a great review. So, can you refill the mermaid markers if they are designed like the water brush? I really like the colors in the mermaid set. Thanks for the great flower watercolor. Always fun to watch you create something; you make it look so very easy.

Great review! I love my Prima water brushes and the Davenport ones look a lot like them. I have TH water brush markers also and to me the Prima are way better. Love your painting! Thanks for sharing.

I've been waiting for this video. Now I wish I had gotten these markers when I had the 60% coupon. I think I'll be making a trip to Michaels tomorrow. btw that angel is amazing.
    Edited to add
If you want these markers call before you go and get them to hold them aside for you. They had been sold out at the 3 Michaels nearest me until today. I called one and they said that they had just gotten in 8 sets but would hold one for me as I couldn't get there until the evening. By the time I got there, there was only 1 other left.
