Brailee's experience is a great conversation starter to look deeper into "help" and mission work! Americans are raised to have a narrower perspective around privilege where we force our ideas of what others need on communities. The term will make you uncomfortable (which isn't a bad thing) and is called White saviorism. It's "an ideology that a White person acts upon from a position of superiority to rescue a BIPOC-Black, Indigenous, or person of color-community or person." Organizations like Brailee's are invited in by officials who disregard what their community expresses they want/need. It's like your parent inviting their co-worker's kids who you don't know to your birthday party.
I'm assuming most young women who chose to go on the trip shared Brailee's sentiment of wanting to help and educate, which comes from a good place. But these are the growing pains of coming into adulthood that get complex, which makes you such a better person in the long run. Not everything is so black and white; not all help is asked for or wanted. You can choose to be hurt by it or you can learn from it. We often offer help from a self-centered perspective, what we deem that person needs. But if we stop to ask, "may I help you? If so, how can I help you?" we'll find out exactly what others need.
If you think about how Brailee and her roommates were there for only 4 months, can you imagine how many other people that town has seen even in a single year? Their feelings toward her were nothing personal. No doubt, they've seen young women treat their every day lives like a vacation or a coming of age experience, take photos with their children like they were pets, and abuse the resources in their town. People can't help but be wary or defensive when their home is a revolving door for strangers.

it’s so interesting to here how different it is in different countries because here in the uk it’s common to live at home until ur late 20’s . most people will go off to university at 18 then when they have finished around age 22 move back home with parents so it’s crazy to here braille say she was embarrassed to live at home at 19 when that’s just the normal over here because it’s way too expensive to move out

I wonder if the kids/families just didn't like feeling like they needed "white saviors". Not saying that's why you went I'm just thinking maybe that's why they gave you pushback. I think you should share the name of the program so others don't run into a similar situation!

I wonder that too! And maybe we should have been more aware that it could be received that way. Brai just went to help teach and care for the kids. And maybe the students and parents have had negative experiences with other teachers, I don’t know.

    Greetings from Costa Rica.
I am sorry you had a difficult time here. Many of the problems you encountered seem to be a result of the company you travelled with. They should have prepared you with the history of the country and what to expect especially discussing your safety.
So, Costa Rica is not a 3rd world country…..they have dissolved their army and used the money for universal healthcare and education, many software companies have offices here and the amount of world trade they are doing is increasing every year. There is an American hospital in San Jose that provides outstanding care. I am retired Nurse Practitioner from the United States, and I can tell you that the healthcare I receive here is outstanding. One of the reasons that you might have felt uncomfortable or unwelcome is that so many “ westerners “ are moving here.
My husband and I live here in Atenas 6 months of the year and in Virginia.

  • @ohbilleh

I definitely think there's a lesson here that Brailee could learn in how some countries (especially ones that are considered by the rest of the world to be poor/behind/third world) don't actually want white saviors coming in from the US. I think there's been an industry made around it, and it sells an opportunity for experience to young white kids. It just doesn't take into account the community you're going into. The entire situation is just white privileged people coming in with a mindset that the community is something that needs to be saved when it doesn't consider itself that, so they can feel better about themselves for doing something good.

There are layers upon layers of confusion and misunderstandings. I am Cuban American and I am very different from other Hispanics. Many prejudices exist between nationalities. For example, I grew up using a mosquito (bug) net due to the blackouts and lack of AC (communism sucks) so for me to hear you guys talking about it like some interesting thing is itself a big clue as to how different we are and it makes me think that you have had it very easy in life. That’s the sort of thing that makes people resentful, dismissive, and not receptive to what you have to say. Everyone’s experiences are so vastly different. Glad Brai is ok.

I taught ESL pre-k for 3 years, and I'm moving up to kindergarten this coming year. I LOVED teaching my ESL babies! I knew very little Spanish, and was so worried about being a teacher for them. I was so scared I was going to fail them as a teacher, since I knew very little Spanish. I have had several students come in knowing no English at all, and by the end of the year they are holding conversations with me in English. That is truly the biggest achievement as a teacher to me. I'm moving schools this coming year, and I'm sad because I will miss seeing my former ESL babies. They would all come and hug me every morning before they went to their other classes. I travel the world on all our breaks we have, and I would always buy my kids something from where I traveled to. I went to Peru, and brought back little pens with alpacas on it. Then I went to Egypt, and bought pencils with camels on it. I would send a message to my parents where I went over the break, and I bought the students a little gift from the place I visited to. I then had students bring me things from their home country when they would visit. I had a student move from Venezuela for the last 5 months left of school. At the end, he made me a handprint then painted the Venezuela flag. I literally teared up when I saw it. I LOVE teaching ESL so much! I hate that she didn't have a good experience. She learned a lot though!

hey brai! congrats on everything! i know it can seem hard when the community doesn’t seem like they want you, but honestly (another comment mentioned this) costa ricans have been harassed by a lot of white savior individuals just in history in general so it’s hard for them to be trusting. i know that wasn’t your intent but maybe try putting yourself in their shoes. you’re a child with pure beautiful intentions so don’t feel bad at all! sometimes for us POC, it’s hard to trust certain individuals (even if they have good energy). glad you made an impact on a couple of kids!

Kayli, I’ve been a silent viewer since before Winston was born. I adore u and brai but this video made me extremely uncomfortable. I know you two are wonderful humans which is why I had to click off but some of the things brai said were outrageous. I truly hope you two sit down and do some reflection. We aren’t trying to criticize you just want you to grow and understand others. You can say all you want but ultimately brailee went to Costa Rica for herself. Singing party in the USA even tho she knew she was making those in the bar angry and uncomfortable??! Such a privileged American. Please don’t travel if you can’t be respectful. Wishing children were grateful for your presence?? It’s disgusting she has so much to learn. Also teach her that third world country is a derogatory term since obviously the adults in her life failed her. The correct term is developing. When she brought up how the African kids love white saviors I died inside. Please educate her on diversity, equity and inclusion.

third world country isn’t a derogatory term.. it’s the truth.. they are third world countries. they have extremely low income. the average income in costa rica is $820 a month.. that’s $9,840 a year. where as America the average income is $59,000 a year so $4,916 a month.. it isn’t a term loosely. it’s because it’s the truth.. just because they do have stuff and they may not even see they’re lives as a struggle it is.. u can say it’s way cheaper to live there so they don’t need as much income.. but the average apartment price for a 1 bedroom is $350 that’s 42% of they’re monthly income. where as the average rental in America is $1,600 which would be 33% of the average income. not to mention any other costs.. they have no disposable income in Costa Rica.. they don’t have access to a lot of things ppl in America do.. and just because they don’t want ‘white saviors’ coming doesn’t make the fact they are a third world country go away. they are. just because it is more developed as opposed to somewhere like Afghanistan doesn’t change anything. they can be more developed.. and also I think brailee is young for one.. I don’t think she meant oh idk why they just didn’t care about me blah blah.. I think she meant something completely different.. she was prob fed something that wasn’t the truth.. and I assume she thought the children would be excited because she was invited to go teach the kids. if u think u are being INVITED u would to be excited. she didn’t think she was intruding.. she thought she was going to help children. that isn’t a crime and she shouldn’t feel bad for anything said. u need to grow up.. and Americans acted privileged because we are.. we are one of the most privileged countries in the world. we are fortunate asf here. so if she wanted to spread positivity and that privilege that doesn’t be an issue. I hope u have the day ur meant to have.

That's such a weird situation that a school would ask for help from other countries to then not be nice or helpful or kind to those people?? Makes zero sense! My sister did a similar trip maybe about 25 years ago from the UK and I always looked up to her for doing that trip as I was a little girl at that time, so hearing your experiences makes me so proud of you! I guess that's how Layla thinks about you with basically the same age gap! You were so brave! When I first started senior school (high school) I cried and begged my mum to take me home every day for weeks and she basically had to kick me out of the car every day for the first term because I was so scared and sad and lonely so I totally get that feeling. I'm now 32 and I haven't done much on my own since university so it would be a challenge for me to do something outside my comfort zone now. You have inspired me though! Life is for living and we're all proof that you can overcome fears and be strong

We’ve talked about that a lot! They won’t be living in the same city, so they’ll still be experiencing new things separate from each other. But not so far away from each other, I think they’re both over long distance.❤
