This is one of my favourites. It''s the dark horse titan giant whose shoulders others stood on. The edgy dissonance of the adagio intro must have been revolutionary in 1788......Those stabbing major sevenths in the violins makes my hair stand on end.

In e flat major, like a certain other "revolutionary" symphony. It was the era.

Gosh this slow intro gives me goosebumps ! So grandiose, noble and dramatic, keeps the audience guessing before it goes allegro.

Along with the Szell and Bruno Walter, this is one of the best of the older, standard-instrument versions of this music.

Yes, but Bohm captures the magic atmosphere like no one.. listen also to Josef Krips and Furtwangler.. but this one is an icon..

Karajan was also a master of K.543 - he nails that slow introduction like no other. The Berliners play so well for both Bohm and Herbie...after such knowledge it’s honestly hard to hear this (or the other mature Mozart symphonies) played by period bands

A masterclass in how to play Mozart. Rattle and N-Seguin take note.

Cuando se escucha el primer movimiento de esta sinfonía no es de extrañar que se haya dicho: "Cabe hallar en Mozart el milagro de la perfección".

For me , this and The Jupiter are Mozart's crowning achievements symphonically . The menuetto allegretto is absolute perfection . And , as someone so correctly pointed out , these late symphonies have all the earmarks of Papa Joseph Haydn .

About the symphony -- what can we say? It's Mozart at his best, and that is as close to perfect as we humans have yet gotten.
About the performance: Lovely old-school playing. The main difference between this and later period-instrument performances is that here the strings use broader articulation, which makes everything sound heavier (and to my mind less Mozartean). Yet the woodwinds and horns play with great articulation.
A note about the orchestra's size: There's a letter from Mozart describing in glowing terms a performance of one of his symphonies. He gave the proportions as:
    40 violins
    10 violas
    8 cellos
    10 double basses
Doubled winds including six bassoons (!!!)
So we can't say "the orchestra's too big" for Mozart. But proper balance is needed, so the woodwinds should be at least two on a part; for K543 that would be 2-3 flutes, 4 clarinets, 4-6 bassoons, and probably 4 horns.

Au contraire, that's when you use the gift of the infinite playback to counteract that.

At 11:53, as in many other moments of the symphony, all Beethoven is already there, however Mozart came first ;-)

That's an interesting observation; Beethoven apparently wrote his 8th Symphony with material left over from writing his 7th Symphony, so perhaps there is a connection. G minor, also in flats, is not that far removed from this key; something as simple as a development theme in a non-tonic key could be spun off into the main theme of an entirely new work.
