The best Bee Gees song ever! It was their last No.1 hit and in many countries. Written by Barry and Maurice , it started from a demo of a drum machine by Maurice and they built it from there. The record company tried to get the noisy intro beat taken off but the band refused and knew it was a signature sound. I don’t know why but this song manages to uplift but also make me cry every time. It such a powerful melody. And the structure of the song is so complicated but sounds simple. 4 weeks at No.1 here in U.K. I miss the Bee Gees .

Love your reactions ladies and appreciate your taking me on a trip back in time and to hear your comments on these wonderful songs. I am a young 76 years old so I've seen and heard music through all it's phases. Watching the two of you appreciate these oldies even brings tears to my eyes at times, nostalgia is a powerful and wonderful thing.
My two favourite groups of all time are the Bee Gees and Abba and they have both both produced a wonderful catalogue of great music. If you want to hear a not often played gem from the Brothers Gibb then take a listen to 'The Only Love' you will be totally bowled over. There is a version where they sing live and it goes beyond incredible. A true masterpiece.
Keep up the good work ladies and Cheers,

It’s one of my favorites from all of my favorites, which are almost all the songs The Bee Gees wrote. Lately I have been going through some their lesser known songs and they’re are all so beautiful. It’s a shame that the radio stations in the US refused to play their music for a few years. Complete albums were totally ignored and they have such great songs. I have noticed in other reaction sites were they’re so dismissive of The Bee Gees music and they’ll just say they sing too high and they’re a Disco band, not bothering to really listen to them. The Bee Gees are great no matter if it’s in their falsetto voices or their chest voices. The Bee Gees didn’t like to be called a disco band because their music was of different genres. In the 70’s it was primarily funk and r&b’s.

    • @generationgapreacts
      @generationgapreacts  2 роки тому +5

That is a disappoint that they were put into such a small box to some radio stations. Their non-disco era music is amazing! But their funk music is amazing too!

There is a live video of this from a concert in London I believe that has Phil Collins on drums. It's awesome! The "stomping"sound drum beat you mentioned supposedly came up with by Maurice in the garage of all places lol. When they first went into the studio, all the producers and big wigs wanted it taken out, but the brothers said no, it's staying. After the song was released everybody wanted a copy of it or how it was done, incuding Phil Collins. Thank you for doing this one as well, awesome song..... just like all the rest! I think they were allergic to writing bad songs.

Hi girls - I think this was the best time of the three brothers. They had many #1 hits, wrote many definitive songs for other artists AND were obviously on top of their game health-wise. Man, they look damn good too - Barry with long hair, tightly combed back and pigtailed, Rabin with slightly blond hair and horny French cap on and Maurice - proper and as always joyful, fun...

After being the most successful group of the 70s with 9 #1 songs, they hit a dry spell in the 80s. This song was a Bee Gees comeback. Music always changes. Artists either change with the times or get left behind. This is why the Bee Gees had such a long, great, career. They kept reinventing themselves by creating a completely different sound updating their music to fit the current times.

You both continue to charm with your chemistry and humor and Bee Gees love!! Thanks so much. This song won #2 in the contest "The UK's Favorite 20 Bee Gees Songs" The song got to No. 1 in the UK and much of Europe, but didn't do well in the U.S. (#75 Top 100)) because the trio was still battling to get radio play after the silly and phobic Disco backlash. America wasn't ready to welcome them back after their 9 songs saturated the airwaves in the latter half of the '70s. The Bee Gees needed a few more years to get the airplay and promo they deserved. "You Win Again" was awarded the 1987 British Academy's Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. That's saying a lot! You liked the drum stomps? Brother Maurice conceived the drum machine sounds in his garage. Phil Collins asked him for a copy of the stomps.😆 Rock on. Ladies!!

After the Disco slump took place in the at the tail-end of the 70's into the early 80's, the boys were busy writing new songs to try and reinvent themselves (yet again) . . . Very little held them back though, as they always seemed able to conjure up new styles for themselves which they felt would work . . .
These were the same days when they came up with a "Love" song for Babra Streisand's vocal skills, Woman In Love - Diana Ross was then looking for a song for her to make a comeback - and they gave her the "Pop" Chain Reaction . . . Also the same decade as Islands In The Stream appeared for Kenny & Dolly, too . . . While in the 90's it was Immortality they wrote especially for Celine to sing . . . (Of course, there were many, many, more songs they wrote for not only other singers, but also to perform them themselves later as well - which is why they have such a huge catalogue of music . . .) - And, many groups or singers have also wished to make covers of some of their better known songs also . . .

This song came out in 1987 and it completely fell under my radar. I was only listening to FM radio and I doubt this would have gotten much play. It's obviously post disco material. Barry is singing in his "normal" range without so much falsetto. It did appear that Robin may have hit some high notes. I need to hear it a few more times before I put it on my play list.

Love it!! Fun fact: There are NO drums in the recorded version!! Mo created the "stomps" sound on the new equipment in his garage home studio!! The producers (I think that was their title) didn't want the stomps and/or wanted them turned down, but The Brothers said no!! Then they had other musicians asking for "the stomps", lol!! And of course, it is part of what makes the song! Thank you Mo!! Love Robin's "Oh Girl" and love his long hair and tam, and love Barry's ponytail, which he did for a movie he was making :-) They played this song for Nelson Mandela concert with 2 full sets of drums and Phil Collins was on one!! Love the harmonies!!
Edit: Just read that Mo said there is just 1 drum and the rest are just sounds he created on his new studio equipment. :-)

Fun fact. Maurice created the stomping sound by recording the sound of hitting various trash cans in his garage. When you see this song performed live, there is no actual drums or percussion instruments, just Maurice with either a keyboard, keytar or synthesiser. Phil Collins later approached Maurice in an airport looking to purchase a copy of “the stomps” for a song that he was working on. Maurice gave them to him for free as a thank you for being a session drummer for the Bee Gees since 1971. When asked about this in an interview shortly before his death he replied “I don’t have many genuine mates, Phil is one”.

So many people are surprised by the Bee Gees songs of the 1980s. Unfortunately, the Bee Gees "disco backlash" was still going on... well into the 1980s, and a lot of radio station program directors would not touch their music. What they didn't know was they were already playing their music... it was just being sung by other artists (Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, etc.). So this great tune, "You Win Again" hardly got any airplay, and only reached a peak of #75 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. We all know this song deserved to reach much higher than #75. Anyway... previously, I requested you two to react to two songs by the brothers... "Nights on Broadway" (performed live on The Midnight Special) in 1975, and "This Is Where I Came In" (their final single & video) from 2001. After I posted that request, I realized there were two more singles, that NOBODY EVER REACTS TO, that I wanted to request a reaction to. Mom may or may not remember these two... they are both from the 80s, and in both of the videos, the brothers actually get to play acting roles. The first is "He's A Liar" from 1981. This was the first single from the "Living Eyes" album. The style of the music was WAY DIFFERENT from the songs on their previous "Spirits Having Flown" album. It may have been too much of a departure from their normal style because a lot of radio stations would not play the song... or perhaps it was because of the "disco backlash" that was into full swing. Either way, the song did hit the Top 40, but did not chart much higher. Maurice's acting abilities shine in this video!!!!! The second song is "The Woman In You" from 1983. It is a single taken from the soundtrack of the "Staying Alive" movie (which was a sequel to "Saturday Night Fever"). A lot of people don't remember this song, the soundtrack album, or even the movie. The song was definitely in the style of 1980s dance music, and again, the brothers had a chance to play acting roles in the video. Both of these videos seem to have poor resolution as the master copies of them have apparently disappeared over the years, but I would still love to see you two react to them and react to the great acting roles the brothers did in both videos.

So you can see Andy Gibb 's voice was identical like his brother Barry, but a little bit softer.
It is one of their many good songs.

100 thumbs down... You win again, is a song written by Hank Williams, And a big hit for Jerry Lee Lewis, who died just a few days ago.. One of the big 4 who invented rock and roll music...And you poke fun at him by playing this crap ....

Speaking of crap, you get 1,000 thumbs down. Did you even bother to listen to this song/lyrics? This song was written by the Gibb brothers in 1987.
Hank Williams' song, with the same title, but entirely different lyrics, is from 1952. Next time, before you have a meltdown, you might want to do some research, or think.

This was terrific music from the brilliant Bee Gees during a 'quiet spell' for them ..... one of their best releases in my eyes, the beat, the lyrics, just truly outstanding.

Love this one. Thank you for doing this one. Agree so much with you that their lyrics are as good as their voices. I heard this for the first time in a carpark in Norway, and it took my immediately back to Australia with the Bee Gees. There is something about their sound that us unmistakably Bee Gees. Love those ad libs from Robin, too. This is still one of my favourites. Can I suggest Blue Island, the MTV live performance? It is magical.

Imagine how happy I am to sign off from work today and immediately see your reaction to this great tune. They were extraordinary (well pretty much about everything) at evolving with the times. Wow, I love this. Barry's voice is perfect for this lead, and the ad libs from Robin are "knock you off your feet" soul touching. Of course the harmony is outstanding, and you can't help but move to Mo's stomps.

@@generationgapreacts This is from their 1987 album ESP. It just didn't do as well in the US as in the UK and Europe. There are many great tracks on this album. If you would like to hear something with a gospel type sound, try "Live or Die (Hold Me Like a Child)." You won't hear better harmonies (even from the brothers themselves). It still gives me goosebumps.

Maurice came up the 'stomps' ( the thumping sound) while messing around in his garage on his drum machine.....he was a musical genius....he could coax music out of any instrument he laid his hands on....

Nr. 1 hit all over the earth, except US, because of the crime of backlash. Not to imagine, but things went that way. It's such a great banger. Lateron, they came up with 'One', and that song was to find in US Top Ten.

I love this song!! I discovered it a couple of years ago. I am an 80's music girl but I do not remember this song back then. Blame that on the American DJ's...they were still having Disco flashbacks I guess. It went to #1 in a lot of other countries except the US...it only got to like #85 or something. Remember when they encouraged people to burn their Bee Gees records in the late 70's? Anyway, I'm glad you guys played this and loved it. I know I am one who suggested it too. Next Bee Gees request -- "Love So Right" -- Thanks Ladies!

@@generationgapreacts - "Bodyguard" is a terrific song, also from later in their career when the US basically shut them out of the radio there. Dumb!! They should have had a dozen more hits like "Fallen Angel", "One". Their songs in the 80's and 90's and even until Mo died in 2003, were better than anything else on the radio. Still is!!!!
