After the "group A of rally raid" failed quite spectacularly in the mid-late 90s (only Mitsubishi ever made a homologation special, the 2-seater Pajero Evo), the FIA and the manufacturers straight up went for a group B-esque concept. The concept was to make few-unit roadlegal offroad SUVs, which would then fight for the Dakar Rally and such. Mitsubishi loved the idea and designed the Pajero Evo 2+2, Toyota too and made the RSC, Volkswagen showed interest (that would become the Race Touareg)... but the thing died before it started because, boy, F1 is fucking expensive so Toyota bailed. Such a shame!
