I sat on a stack of dog food at General Feed And Seed In Santa Cruz Ca and heard that story and song. My buddy came down into town every Sunday for the flea market, Seabright brewery where we enjoyed some Bluegrass from Harmony Grits, then finished off with Logos books and records, where I met my wife. ( together for 28 years now, married for 21). We skipped the brewery one day for Robert earl keen. At the feed store. Great times so many great shows...
What a fun song. I love the kicker line in it. Great story intro, too! I'm just learning guitar right now, and that finger picking was upbeat Inspirational joy to hear and watch!
Thanks for posting this!! This was my very first exposure to REK, saw this show when it was first aired. I ran out and bought the album immediately after seeing this!! Been a BIG fan ever since!
Man that dude on the mandolin is awesome. I've seen him play violin on another video from this show. I wonder why we haven't seen him playin with REK on later shows..?
Danke!!!
To help: He is being mostly literal with this song, it is in fact about trying to catch a fish. What he describes is a shared experience most men AND women understand, which is what makes the song lyrics so appealing because for Americans, specifically Texans like Robert Earl Keen, we can all understand the experience. So you’re not “missing” much. The song is literally about catching a fish, and he gives the audience the nuance and/or colloquial context and explains the double entendre of the idea of what a “Five Pound Bass” can mean before the song starts. Most importantly to note culturally is that he and the band are playing traditional bluegrass music.

Been to Barnesville Ohio for the National Pumpkin Festival and seen REK a bunch in Texas. It's a good life, so long as a man doesn't weaken!
Very unique vocal. Love ReK.

I get it 100% 5lb bass is all I ever need . . . anything else is just greed. Awesome
Anyone else see Bryan Duckworth in the audience?!?!
Thought the same thing...that is him.
i'd swear the guy on base was my shop teacher in the mid eighties
*bass
I think the phonetic spelling was necessary for the purpose of distinction 🤷♀️
I wanted to sing this song for my school talent show in 3rd grade....for some reason my mom said I couldn’t...
You know, I so wish that REK and Nanci Griffith could have had a band together.
What does "hook the toaster mean"? Awesome tune!
I assume he's talking about when he and his roommate are fishing in their flooded basement apartment and hook the toaster.
@stevec9870 Inventor of brown Jello?
that'd be me playing bass. ..
A round on me - for the the 5 lb. mullets!

I just want all of you to know that Jesus loves you and he died for your sins on the cross
