  • In December 1981, amid a raging storm and in the dark, the Penlee lifeboat - the 'Solomon Browne', desperately tried to take the crew and passengers off the stricken MV 'Union Star'. Tragically both boats foundered. 8 heroic Lifeboatmen and 8 crew aboard the Union Star were lost.
    There were no survivors.

The seas looks so calm and benign compared to that night.

God rest their souls. This is a classic case where the skipper called for help too late, leading to the loss of both his vessel and the lifeboat and all of their crews. Guys don't be too proud to call for help if you get into trouble on the water. The RNLI would much rather tow you into harbour, than try to pick up survivors after you have gone aground and your vessel is breaking up.

Maritime law has been changed as a result of the tragedy. Coast Guards can now compel a ship in distress to accept a tow from a rescue tug.

Very poignant tribute to those very brave men of the Solomon Brown and the crew and passengers of the Union Star. It is a beautiful stretch of coast, but extremely treacherous. I’ve walked it a few times.
May God rest their souls. 🌺😢

I worked out by looking at old pictures of the Union Star on the rocks that there are still big scratches visible on the rocks to this day.

Do you know if any Union Star wreckage is visible at low tide? I intend to go here to pay my respects next time I'm in Cornwall.

I dont think so any more - have climed down a few times and to take the video. Took me so long to work out where the trajedy unfolded. It's good they have a memorial now. Some of the climb is quite challenging so you need to be careful.

Watch the 'you tube' "Penlee Lifeboat, The Cruel Sea" and wonder at the courage and skill of the lifeboat men and the Sea King helicopter crew who battled 100 mph winds and 60' waves trying to save lives. The lifeboat crew wouldn't leave the Union Star, still trying to rescue even amongst the rocks and breakers close to shore. The Sea King pilot said the last glimpse he had of the Solomon Browne she was alongside the Union Star with the crew's arms outstretched trying to save lives to the last. He said he it was the bravest thing he had ever seen or expected to see. Touchingly the RNLI regard the Solomon Browne as still being out on duty as she never returned to harbour.

except that he buggered off before it was all over, he should have recovered to height and watched until the lifeboat was leaving the scene, instead he "assumed", they also didn't take the heavy weights normally used in extreme conditions on the highline and as a result couldn't place a line over the ship, he even had the cheek to say people were reluctant to come out on deck!! The ship was being swept by 60ft seas!
