Mikhail Pletnev plays Rachmaninoff - The 4 Piano Concertos (Jūrmala, 2023)

- This must be the first time in 20 years Pletnev has done a full Rachmaninoff Concerto cycle. Needless to say this is very different from Yuja's take. The slow tempi - now familiar from the Verbier renditions of PC1 and PC2 - have spilled over into PC3 and PC4 too. Pletnev is also no longer playing the ossia cadenza in PC3. The cycle is set to be repeated at least three more times: in Tokyo, Rolle and Rotterdam.

I have heard these concertos played by many pianists over the years but this concert proves that Mikhail Pletnev is certainly among the greats. The playing was the most beautiful I have heard. Quite outstanding. The slow places in each piece moved on to the faster pieces in a way which made the whole build up, through anticipation of what is to come, into something gorgeous. There is certainly a meloncholic air to these concertos which sometimes gives way to a feeling that happiness can occur at times; maybe remembering good days, the love of his wife and family, it is all there. Many sad events as well as good, happened in Rachmaninoff's life, and surely we can feel this in his concertos, brought out so well by Pletnev. It was truly glorious playing, truly the best (for me) in many years. Rachmaninoff is my favourite composer and so thankyou Classical Rarities for letting us share in this wonderful concert.
M. Pletnev, absolute Master of pianism, one of the greatest ever. Thank you!
I heard him in his 20s!
@@MishaSkripach What luck! I hope to hear him for the first time in my life next year in Hamburg, the maestro plays the preludes of Chopin and Scriabin.
@@JaquesCioran I wish we could afford a trip to Hamburg! Enjoy, you are lucky! He came to Britain, but to Scotland, it is still too far to travel for us.
I’m happy to have been in the audience - it was the most genius piano playing I’ve ever heard live. Including the encores …
I’m so looking forward to be in the live audience next week!
hello
You are so lucky
I feel lucky to have been born in the same era as him. He is the most artistic and moving piano player in the world right now.
Thank you so much for sharing .
After Rachmaninoff and Horowitz, only Pletnov remained from the piano playing style represented by Rachmaninoff and Horowitz. Pletnov is the last great romantic pianist who can still play the piano in a "storyteller" style, who plays the music in a natural style.
Can we even get a glimpse into the GENIUS of Maestro Pletnev’s mind as he delves into the soul of Rachmaninov’s concertos with awesome brilliance? Maestro Mikhail Pletnev does it all in this unbelievable concert! Musical GENIUS beyond compare.
Unfortunately, Rachmaninoff's piano concertos have become an Olympic arena for many pianists to show off their power and technique. But this performance by Pletnev is quite different. He acts like a great painter, not an athlete.
He calmly looks out over the landscape around him and skillfully captures the rich colors of nature. He turns the passages that other pianists play like machines into a mellow wine of endless nuance. Bravo! There is true art here.
Totally agree with you!
I agree. That said, Pletnev still has all the chops and could play it at breathtaking speeds today. Fortunately for us he shows us the artistic brilliance of a mature artist.
Thank you very much !
Mikhail Pletnëv profoundly embodies Dostoïevski's "Idiot" Prince Mishkin who said:
"Beauty will save the world."🙏
What a genius!
I'm so happy right now that I think I can break through the mantle of the earth!
So unique
Concert by Mikhail Pletnev at the Dzintari Concert Hall
Program: 3rd and 4th concert of S.Rakhmaninov
August 22, 2023 from the Nativity of Christ.
I would like to measure the event that happened from the height of a historical perspective.
It would seem an ordinary concert, what is special about it?
An no.
Let's make a quick conclusion.
Oh......... that was something!!!!!!!!!!!
Feelings after Rachmaninov's 3rd Concerto can be described in one word - the best thing I've heard ever, anywhere, with anyone in my entire life.
If after the first performance two days ago we declared that those who were not in the hall lived this day in vain, then today we can say even more boldly - those who have never been to today's Pletnev's concert .. ..their life just passed by.
As long as you are alive, as long as Pletnev is alive and playing, you can fix everything. But there is no trace of postponing a visit for many years. Nobody is eternal, we all walk under God.
And who knows him, maybe just attending his concert will prolong your days on this earth??
Here is a schedule of his next concerts.
mikhailpletnev.com/
But how it will be there, beyond the sea, who knows?
We will not give any guarantees that these feelings will be repeated.
Second, Pletnev is not an Artist, not a Pianist, not a Musician, not a Conductor.
This is an Artist, instead of brushes, oils and paints, he writes with sound through the air.
From the first minutes, Pletnev lifts the viewer from the easy chair of the auditorium and, as it were, transfers from a warm sunny evening in Jurmala to the 14th hall of the Russian Museum of the Mikhailovsky Palace in St. Petersburg and puts it in front of Aivazovsky’s painting and you SEE with your own eyes a picture of a ship setting off on a dangerous journey, a storm , fatal for the ship and the death of almost all crew members, the struggle for the life of the surviving part of the crew and their miraculous rescue and landing on a desert island and their happy discovery and long-awaited return to their homeland to their loved ones.
And all this time, the famous Lermontov's "Sail" sounds like a refrain in the brain
White sail lonely
In the fog of the blue sea! ..
What is he looking for in a distant country?
What did he throw in his native land? ..
Waves are playing - the wind is whistling,
And the mast bends and hides ...
Alas! He is not looking for happiness
And not from happiness runs!
Under it, a stream of lighter azure,
Above him is a golden ray of sunshine...
And he, rebellious, asks for a storm,
As if there is peace in the storms!
Rachmaninov, as it were, dissolves in those pictures and images that your imagination draws at this moment and the waves, rolling one by one, shake you like a chip, and you feel like an integral part of this handful of those who escaped from the depths of the sea, salted through, scorched by the merciless sun to blisters and blown like a sieve by the wind, completely exhausted, but by some miracle still continuing to cling to life as a human being.
From this music comes the transformation of consciousness and movement in space to the place and time that the Artist wrote.
And there's nothing you can do about it.
The weather that day was just a match for the sensations that arose in the hall, from which to the water's edge is less than a hundred meters and it was symbolic. rolled and rolled tirelessly onto the sandy shore, dotted with a few vacationing tourists.
Thirdly, this series of 2 concerts in Dzintari draws on a historical event for the hall and the country.
Dear Yuri,
To complete Mr Pletnëv's schedule, would let know to Italian and from any other country's admirers of this rare artist, he will perform Rachmaninov's concerto 1 in Bolzano (Nov 28th) and in Trento (Nov 29th).
🙏 for your long poetic affectionate text!

unbelivable
I saw him play the piano concerto no.2 at the Edinburgh Festival in August which was brilliant. Its a pity the sound quality isn't great here though.
Grazie Maestro Pletnev.....
You know what would be crazy? If Pletnev conducted from the Piano. If anyone on earth could do it, he could but these are the hardest to do this way.

New arrangement in the inner voice!

Can i ask: was this over 2 days, with 1 & 2 being on the 20th and 3 & 4 on the 22nd? Thanks!
Yes exactly.
Another recent conqueror - Valentina Lisitsa - and she added the Paganini Rhapsody. Unfortunately it was not recorded, but of course she's recorded them with the London Symphony.
To compare Pletnev with Lisitza, it's like to compare a diamond ring, and earrings for 2$, made in China.
I just love Pletnev with Chopin, but take the example of No. 2 in C minor, op. 18: in this he cannot compete with Boris Berezovsky 2007, let alone Grigory Sokolov 1993.
Wait, what's happening with the weird (well, non-standard) ornamentation at ca. 1:22:55?
With all due respect, Yuja cannot be mentioned in the same breath as the Maestro.
Well, Pletnev 30 years ago also wasn't even close to the depth of the Pletnev we know today. I'm very excited to see where Yuja goes next - I got to listen to her playing Rachmaninoff's PC1 live and she definitely is a musician full of ideas!
Very well put@@ClassicalRaritiesChannel I was lucky enough to see her perform Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto and it was a joy, but people always change over years, which is fine! No performance is ever the same, and that's great
Still there's a tradition where his playing came from and the sound and colour was already part of his pianistic outlook. Yuja is fantastic in what she can do but the nuance and singing tone that are so much a part of this music are kind of sidestepped@@ClassicalRaritiesChannel
@@ClassicalRaritiesChannelAllow me please to differ: even young Pletnëv was, as in Michelangelo's affresco, touched by God's finger...
Yuja can certainly play the notes. But has not developed any kind of musical identity. Pl
Terrible audio. Almost sounds mono. 😕🎹
This is an audience recording
