Norman was a physical specimen, and he used his strength and athletic ability to great advantage, hitting the ball extremely high and straight. His golf swing was fast and powerful, with tremendous arm acceleration. His lower body action was somewhat suspect, as he tended to slide his right foot backwards as he came into the impact area in order to compensate for a hip movement that drove toward the ball a bit from the top of the swing. His swing became more noticeably flat and across the line at the top upon taking up with swing coach Butch Harmon, but the results were quite positive as he came out of a 3 year slump to regain the #1 world ranking. The "shark" proved he still had the goods when he almost won the 2008 British Open.
My favorite golfer of all time is "the Shark". Greg Norman was a total badass.
good analysis. his deep hips allowed him to hit high and straight with an in to out swing plane. he hit a driver up over the trees on the 9th at Metropolitan GC in Aust. showing off to Bernard Langer. persimmon driver dead straight like a missile on a wedge trajectory. unbelievable.
many golfers don't understand that his lateral kick back foot movement is a fault, including Tiger teasing him back in lessons with Butch, actually it is a secret move and made him so great, especially if you are baseball player you will understand the reason. Wayne as usual is a great presenter/ teacher he won't touch or criticized anything which is his trade mark due to stiff arm compensation, Greg is a great athlete who played many sport, until 17 he seriously dig in to golf.
he is still the best swinger of the club, 300*+ weeks no 1 in the world prove that, aside from less winning major was his choice to play aggressively. I admire him so much th his over confident can sometimes be interpreted as cockiness, he have successful career in therm of making money after active playing as businessman in course designer, apparel etc which only few legends able to do that.
Another good analysis by WD. He's the best on here.
***** Haha, you saying I'm old? Seriously, the main reason I have a clue is that I spent years overhauling my swing. That's a long hard process when you do it on part time basis and figure it all out yourself. Being well versed in mechanics and physics helps as well.
He dominated out here in Australia. Saw him a lot live... Strong high ball flight and great shotmaker
I read an article that Norman went to Butch before the 1996 Masters and told Butch “I can’t go into the Master’s hitting it this bad.” And Butch said “We don’t have time for a swing change, you are just going to have to use your course management and short game.” And going into the Masters Norman was 149th in greens in regulation.
Norman was telling this all to a sports psychologist. The psychologist said said ‘but you were hitting your irons shots right at the hole’. Norman’s response: “You don’t know where I was aiming. I was hitting it so badly I didn’t go for a single pin. I would aim 12 yards to the right (of the hole), and then I would pull it to 2 feet. Every ball that went crooked seemed to go crooked toward the hole.”
Then came the final round.
“I couldn’t sleep,” Norman told Jensen. “I’m probably the only guy in the world who thinks, ‘I don’t know if I can hold it.’ I didn’t sleep a wink.”
And on Sunday, “Every ball I aimed over there, went over there. I aimed crooked, they went crooked.”
Reconstructing the final nine, Norman explained to Jensen, “I said to myself, ‘Forget Butch; I’m going to fix this thing.’ I started tinkering with my swing on the back nine. That was the mental mistake I made. The physical mistake, of course, was that I wasn’t prepared going in.”
Great Story. Announcers want to think they can read the player's minds, but they are just going on things they have felt or thought personally. You can only guess what someone is thinking at any point it time, and you can truly believe that you know what they gut/girl is thinking, but you really don't know. No one can read minds. Anyone who says they can is a scammer.
@@wdefrancesco That article did provide great insight to Norman’s psyche before that Masters and during, he was full of doubt but still somehow built a 6 shot lead going into the final round. Not a lot was said about Norman not playing well coming into the Masters that year, he missed the cut at Bay Hill and the Players Championship the last 2 tournaments he played before the Masters. Norman didn’t miss that many cuts in his career before this Masters. He almost pulled off a win at the 96 Masters, maybe if he would of just did what Butch told him to do the back nine also, but we will never know.
Hey Wayne can you make swing analysis of J.B. Holmes? That dude is badass golfer, I love his power swing with driver xD
Greg reminds me of Mike Austin!
i'm looking forward to his analysis of bubba watson's driver swing...
Whats the software used to draw lines and measure angles?
Shark was a legend
there was not a better pitcher, wow Seve was quite good.
The player type Norman tidal wave about 90's. Rose those two Brits got job swings.
Whattttt???
And now in English please!
Normans swing from the 80's was a lot better and more on plane, he went to Butch and his swing got arguably worse (mechanically speaking)
Exactly
Its funny on how many "unconventional" or swings you would not teach, went on to be some of the best players in the world. Like Greg Norman, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Bubba Watson, and even early Tiger Woods. Tiger said he had to change his original swing, because it was to violent and would never hold up for a career.
Kevin Braden
That’s because They know what they’re doing. And they could give a flying you know what about what a teacher, which is what I used to do, thinks about a “swing”… As a Lee Trevino famously said “I’ve never taken a lesson because no pro could ever beat me” these are facts. Criticizing a swing that is number one in the world for any length of time it’s like criticizing artwork or a signature. It’s absolutely the reason that players are players and coaches are coaches. And here’s the subconscious belief we’ve all been sold. The greatest players in the world can do it any which way because they’re so “talented” but mere mortals must swing perfectly to play a decent round of golf.
Norman's lower body action is dictated by his lack of backside. Stronger gluteals would have really helped his swing and his back.
let's see...width, he has width....speed and pivot....doesn't restrict with any X factor....keeps the face facing the ball...extends through the ball to keep for hooking...k, that'll about do it.
sweeper of the driver using no wrists, it works, but you have to be physically fit,
Norman could repeat his swing, but in a bunch of high pressure situations he hit a lot of irons far to the right.
....more of a mental thing than any swing flaw, right? that's just golf...
Norman was one of the true good guys in the game- was really sad how he lost some major tournaments at the last second due to unbelievable shots by his competitors- almost like the poor guy was cursed- but hey, he won a lot of tournaments and has more money than I'll see in my lifetime. LOL
My god! can you comment people use proper English!!!
I believe you’re advertising ignorance
Who is this guy commenting on him ?
Another nobody who knows everything??
