As I mentioned in the tutorial, you can export to transparency using the following file formats: PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, BMP - all are available for exporting in GIMP.

I'm wondering if this effect can be used, for instance, like on the circle you sometimes use to bring yourself upon the video. But instead of a hard borderline difference between that circle and the video, can this effect be used to visually blend your circle's border into the video? Because I assume you're using a 16x9 transparency with a circle cut-out in it. I'm not sure if I'm making sense.

Can I have multiple gradient lines? Let's say I want to do the same for the left side?

Just want to point out here that you can do this with the "Mode" setting at the top of the "Gradient" tool - if you set it to "Erase" you can drag a "FG to Transparent" gradient across any picture without extra layers and it'll do exactly what you want here. (Assuming the image has a transparency channel)

Much better!!. The video completely misses the point. Having both an alpha channel and a layer mask is a redundancy, one is enough to create a transparent gradient . Not to say the chosen example is so artificial

I often run into a specific issue with GIMP, and want to know whether you can help me with this.
When selecting for color while having a specific layer selected, GIMP selects the colors of all the other layers as well, so when I want to change a specific color to a color-gradient, the gradient will then extend to the selected color in the entire image, instead of only the layer I want to have it in.

It's great that GIMP has effectively the same lingua franca workglow found in most every other graphics editor. Transition away from Adobe is so much easier as a result.

Love this lesson. I follow the Presentation Zen slide design popularized by Garr Reynolds. It uses far fewer words and visuals that supports attention and memory. Many of his word or number slides have the number in a solid area with a picture to the left that fades out towards the text. Finally a way to do this with open source 🥂👍🏽

Is there a way to create multiple gradient lines without the need to press for every single the "apply layer mask". It's a bit annoying have to do this for each gradient line....

it's good but when you say stuff like "add alpha channel" you need to explain why and what an alpha channel is in relation to the gradient transparency project

    Nice detail video
Good to see that gimp vs ps transform one when ps got glitchy you dont do jump cut
Some tools in Ps is not very user friendly like vanishing point and generate image asset
For starter most got not much idea how it works

Hi Davis ! GREAT tutos as usual...
I did a blunder in GIMP and don't know how to revert it :
When selecting a tool, a tool property (options) floating window of that tool pops up. I once got rid of one such popup window by "X" it on the top right system bar and now, I don't have ANY popup tool property windows that shows. How do we configure this to show ?

Make sure you are using true black on the layer mask and not just a dark gray. Gray will create partial transparency whereas black creates full transparency. Hex code for black is #000000
