  • Hands up above the hair line isn't a common guard to see. But Dekkers uses it so well and it's something we should all learn.

    ramon deckers had amazing defense, not only did he use multiple guards, transitioning between them depending on the situation but he also had unique ways of performing those guards, just like this high guard shown hereor his own version of the long guard, which sometimes used the opposite hand or even a weird ahh guard he did when he would place one hand across his face and one across his body. that dude was really amazing, there so much unique stuff to learn from him just from these guards, let alone his ferocity and offensive game.

    I’ve been practicing putting my forearms up when I guard especially in order to guard and counter with a hook, and my sparring partner accused me of elbowing his fist because of how much harder it is when you make contact.

    Ramon reminds me of Winky Wright a little. Of course Winky never had a high high guard like that, but he used his arms and body to turn right when his opponent turned right to take the sting off the punches. He also stepped back to not let shots land flush. I can see the fluidity in both Dekkers and Wright and it makes me love the high guard more! This high high guard is used more by Glen Johnson. Check out his use of this super high guard! You'll find similarities!

    As a thinner, lanky person, bigger opponents can blast through my parries so I really liked the high guard and deflecting shots off my forearms. But I struggled with counter punches for exactly the reasons you described and I started lowering my guard and utilizing more head movement. I'm definitely going to revisit high guard and initiate my counters with the leg kick now. Great insight!

    Finally somebody big on UA-cam says it. Ramon dekkers despite being Dutch fought VERY different from guys like gokhan saki and robin van roosmalan. At long range he played the Thai game using palms out the fight off clinch attempts, teeps and checks.
    For some reason people see his highlights and think he fought the whole glove up throw combination Dutch style and if you watch all his fights it’s just not the truth. This guy had a very versatile skill set and even went entire fights at times maintaining what most would call a “Thai style” only throwing combos in little pockets here and there

    My personal style is pretty similar to this 🙂 Other people at the gym sometimes try to make fun of how high I hold my guard (maybe not quite up at Ramon's elevation, but I tend to rest around mid-forehead height), but it's kept me very safe in sparring, even with people who have 30+ lbs weight advantage over me and don't understand how to control their power (not a general complaint about big fighters; I've sparred with people around twice my weight who I've felt safe with because they don't say "yeah, we'll go light" and then try to rip my head off after the first exchange), and they're the ones who usually end up asking me to go lighter after getting chewed up by low kicks.
    For the punching angle issue, I find trying to sit deeper on my punches helps it work out to where I can strike effectively at the head or body, though there might be some other adjustment I'm doing unconsciously to go with that. In any case, I can punch hard enough to make people respect it, so even if it isn't the best guard to punch out of, it's definitely workable (and it also works well for elbows, once you're inside of straight punch distance).

    This is how I block punches, I learnt it in Muay Thai after I transitioned from full contact karate but I didn't know Ramon Rekkers used to block like that too.. now I'm really excited! Wow!!

    For counters I think clinch knees are another great option. Having your arms high and tense definitely makes throwing powerful counter punches harder, but you can easily step grab a collar tie after blocking a punch

      Lock your elbows into the top of your vline , press your knuckles into your forehead from inside of the glove , not the part of the glove where you knuckles are , press your knuckles through the fabric into your forehead , if you have decent proportions this covers your head and 90% of your body , but you have to sink into your back almost like your making your back into a turtle shell .

    Recently, I've decided to focus on learning as many different guards and blocks as possible, and basing my attacks off of having odd opportunities, thanks to the commitment to defense. I practice every stance I can comfortably use, and I evade and block as much as possible, up until I see a clear opening. I assume I'll only be able to dodge, block and grapple, that way my offense is safer and uses less of my gas tank. But I still practice dozens of creative strikes with my hands and elbows. I just don't use them until I'm confident they won't counter effectively.

    High guard with mma gloves did seem like a problem. Do you think Dekker's elbow guard could work well with mma?

    • @leftlegtrumpcard8152
      @leftlegtrumpcard8152 Місяць тому +1

      Typically in an mma scenario the high guard is problematic because your hands are too high to assist in takedown defense. There were a few times I recall seeing clay guida fight with a super high guard but he fought in a much more crouched position which helped bring his elbows closer to his knees and his hips away from his opponents. Hope this helps.

    Or... maybe his guard was not perfect, he should lower it to a normal high guard position and he would be even better?
