I got to see and talk to most all the top bluegrass bands in the 70's - 80's . The Country Gentlemen in my opinion was the very best.
My dad, Don unger was a lifelong charlie waller fan. He knew bout every song by heart. I once said if i ever sold dad's old guitar it would go to charlie waller. Dad's right beside charlie now, in heaven's bluegrass band. ❤❤
This is the “ Classic “ Country Gentlemen !
I saw this version of them back when I was a young sprout growing up in the Blue Ridge Mts of Va,places like Oak Leaf Park in Luray and Watermelon Park in Berryville.
Always loved the CG, nice hearing the oldie Today has been a lonesome day especially. Always liked Charlies kickoff
One of the greatest BG bands ever.
The Amazing county gentlemen. John and my friend Charlie Waller!!!
The best band ever😊
the best bluegrass band i've ever heard.
They were indeed The Best!
true bluegrass.
Wow! Waller could really sing.
Amazing!!
Great singer’s no longer with us
Used to go to the Shamrock in Georgetown to hear this lineup. Then Ed Farris was on bass, I think about 1966.
William Drews yes Ed Farris
No finer band has ever taken the stage!
Is that John Duffy that sang w/ Seldom Scene ?
Yes it was John Duffy. He also helped put the Seldom Scene group together after the CG went there separate ways.
@@slowpoke7759 Thanks for replying , John Duffy is an awesome singer , is he still living ?
@@fergusonto-2032 John Duffy passed on Dec 10, 1996. The bluegrass band The Country Gentleman was a band that originally formed in Washington, DC.
I remember when I was a just a kid. My dad took my brother and I to the small town of Fincastle, Va a few miles north of Roanoke, Va to a Bluegrass Festival on a farm called Cantrell’s Farm. It was Labor Day, 1965 and the festival was the first of its kind to be held in the country. I remember going up on their bus for a jam session. My dad was asked to play with them on their bus before going on stage and the music should have been recorded for an album. Dad played a Martin D-28 guitar and his voice was like Lester Flatt. Flatt and Scruggs. Ralph and Carter Stanley. Don Reno and Red Smiley. The Carter Family and many more.
Look here on UA-cam for a Bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va. in 1965, 1966, and 1967. It will bring you to the festival that was held there. It was the beginning of many bluegrass bands creating their own festivals. I remember being there so very long ago. The music was better than anything being recorded or played now.
@@fergusonto-2032 No, John Duffy passed away Dec.11, 1996. Nearly 18 years ago. I have a lot of there vinyl LP’s on Rebel records.
I was always partial to Eddie Adcock on 5- string. First meet the original group in Fincastle, Va. Labor Day weekend in 1965 at a bluegrass festival at a place called Cantrell’s farm.
YT has the event. Look up bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va in 1965, 66, 67. Every bluegrass musician that was there my dad knew. Some of the best music played was on their buses before going on stage.
@@slowpoke7759 that’s awesome , I had an Uncle , Leroy Canter , who was an awesome fiddle player , he used to go to a lot of fiddlers conventions in his younger days , he rarely came home w/ less than a blue ribbon , he got saved in the early 70’s and I don’t think he played any conventions after that , he just played locally , in church & occasionally at my house but anyway thanks for the info. Mr Duffy was one of my favorites .
I think Bill Emerson was the original banjo player
Eddie Adcock and Tom Gray weren't original CG members...
Eddie Adcock was definitely an original member and I think Tom Gray was also!!!
Negative. Bill Emerson & Bill Yates were original banjo & bass players. They founded the group with Duffy & Waller July 4, 1957 in D.C.
Right adcock gray not original
I SEE Bessie. I don't HEAR Bessie.
A DAMN shame we only get to hear ¾ of the band.
...NOT original !,...-should be Emerson on banjo ?,...and Larry Lahey on bass ?
that's original banjo player EDDIE ADCOCK,JOHN DUFFEY CHARLIE WALLER & TOM GRAY ON UPRIGHT WERE THE ORIGINAL..EMERSOM & SOME OTHERS CAME ALONG AFTER EDDIE & DUFFEY LEFT.
No, he's right. Emerson and Lahey were first. Lahey didn't last long. He was soon replaced by Jim Cox. Tom Gray came after Jim Cox. Emerson was replaced by Pete Kuykendall. Adcock came along after him, in '59 I believe. People incorrectly label this lineup the original Country Gents. They are certainly the classic early lineup but not quite orginal. Having said that, they are my favorite BG band of all time.
Also, Emerson came back for a longer stint after Adcock left for good. That was when they had Doyle Lawson and Bill Yates in the band as well, in the early 70s.
Bill Emerson, Larry Leahy, John Duffy and Charlie Waller.
I think by "original"people mean this is the first lineup that stayed together for a substantial length of time. The earlier configurations were when the founding of the band was still unsettled. After all thiey group literally came about by accident-the car crash that injured Buzz Busby and other members of his band which included some future CG members.
Great band , but I don't like seeing the back of peoples heads.
the best bluegrass band i've ever heard.
