- On a sunny day in March, we headed up to Dollywood to watch ex-White Pass & Yukon #70 being tested before the opening of Dollywood's 2012 season. These test runs were made close together, so there was not much time for runby shots. But, the ones we have come with great sound!

We rode this train listening to the song Train 45 by the Stanley Brothers. Awesome experience.
Without a DOUBT.......this is one of the FINEST recordings of a working steam locomotive ever!!! Beautiful Lunkenheimer Whistle just adds to the effect!! If you have never, personally, exposed yourself to the sights, sounds, and sensations of a working steam locomotive, then you are CHEATING yourself out of one of life's GREATEST experiences!!!
This is a Crosby whistle
I know I am 3 years late after this video was made, but I just found it. Sad I hadn't found it before.
1 word.... A-freaking-mazing!!!
I thought Reading and Northern 425 could bark but man, this is something else!
Awesome video and audio 288jh!
Remember that 425 was built for passenger service, while 70 was built for work on freight trains. 70 has to work nearly twice as hard as 425 does on a daily basis.
2:30 imagine in the old west your about to rob a train, and off in the night you hear that whistle, mega chills!
7:38 "Shave and a Haircut..
7:53 2 bits!"
I love that whistle. You know you're at Dollywood when you hear that whistle
Why do the crossings at dollywood have no lights?
MAX & RUBY
Yep! My family used to stay at Oakmont Condos which is on the corner of Teaster Ln. and Veterans Blvd so we heard the whistle! It was so cool. Loved it.
Yes, They did
9:25 how did you get here at this crossing? Because I was trying to film there.
i have found memories have of both silver dollar city and dollywoods steam engines have chased both parks engines! the main diff between the two parks is one does not that many hills to climb! lol
@PereMarquette1223 It is a Crosby 3 Chime. The Whistle belongs to Dollywood. There has Been a Similar Sounding whistle on In Recent Years, Known as an "American 3 chime" But here, This is the Good Ol' Crosby 3 Chime.
7:07 love it
Reminds me of the O. Winston Link recordings of the N&W before they completely got rid of steam.
i'm glad they got rid of the guady yellow paint on the handrails and cowcatcher
Otaku Railfan I liked it
Ah. I love the Dollywood Express. I live about 2 hours away from Dollywood and I got a season pass for this summer so I will be going a lot. I devoted some of my time to researching the DWood Express. Both of the locomotives are 2-8-2 Mikados #70 (the star of this video) is a Heavy Mikado and #192 is a light mikado.
For narrow gauge, yes. 70 was built as a freight engine for the White Pass & Yukon, while 192 was built as a dual-service locomotive for the US Army. 192 and 70 worked together for many years. 192 would leave Alaska for Dollywood (then known as Rebel Railroad) in 1961. 70 wouldn’t leave Alaska for Dollywood (at that point known as Silver Dollar City Tennessee) until 1977.
I've been to Dollywood ever since I was 3 and I'm 15 now and I still go there every summer
VroomVroomDana Dana me too I've gone since I was one and now I'm 16 every year I went and I still go.
VroomVroomDana Dana we have a lot in common then😝
Just went to Dollywood 11/10/12 for the Christmas event. Klondike Katie was dressed beautifully in lights and all her majesty. An awesome night time sight.
Looooove the whistle echoing inti the mountains
What a beautiful machine!! She sounds excellent, and I would love to see her in person one day.. Great video too!!
awesome whistle
It's a Crosby
Wait when does their operations start march each year?
NEVER GiVE UP
Why doesn’t Silver Dollar City have a train like that?
Because Dollywood was built on top of an old 3-foot gauge logging railroad. They picked up the line in 1961, and opened as Rebel Railroad with locomotive 192. Rebel Railroad changed hands a few times until it became Silver Dollar City Tennessee. They got engine 70 in 1977, and they had her restored to operation in 1985. By then, SDCTN had already been rebranded to Dollywood by 1980.
Silver Dollar City Missouri came long before SDCTN, and the people constructing it had no idea how to build a railway. They contracted out work to the St. Louis San Francisco Railway, who built them a 1.52 mile long 2-foot gauge line for their Davenport 4-4-2t to run on with two coaches in tow. They had never intended for anything more than that to run on the line. Eventually, they got their hands on several Czechoslovakian O&K 0-4-0ts and rebuilt 0-4-0 tender engine 504.
Great work!
Well, They say "It will be running soon" But it has been sitting there in pieces since 05'
Locomotive 192, Is Down For her Overhaul, and is Stripped of Her Driving Wheels. There is a Lot of work To Be Done on 192. As It Stands Right now, 70 Will be the Only Engine Operating in the 2012 Season.
sounds like to me that cinderella runs like a top!
It is currently in service.
This is a really nice Crosby 3 Chime! Great video!
echo at 2:45 is something you might hear before a scene in a movie when theres a life or death situation with a train
Loved this. Been riding the train since Silver Dollar City :)
didnt they run 192 sometime last season ?
I'll slip in a flame suit. I actually prefer Dollywood trains over Disney worlds. I rode on Cinderella 70 and she sounded beautiful, echoing the smokies.
Great video! some of the best audio I've heard on UA-cam and love the new whistle compared to old steamboat they had been running.
Nice sounding whistle!
Richard Weisenberger k
it is a Hancock 3 chime whistle
FuntimeFoxy 1012 It’s actually a Crosby 3 chime.
Very nice audio
The Crosby is the whistle that should BELONG on 70
Well she did wear one when she worked up in Alaska.
Well... Your Information Is Sort of Correct. 70 and 192 Are Really Both Light Mikados.. 70 is Bigger but once you Compair it to others.. These are Tiny.
288jh 70,71,and 73 are all of the same class and were designed for more heavy freight pulling. While 190 and 192 were made for passengers and speed.
288jh that's why 70 is bigger
You forgot 72 and 191 ,73 was actually built 10 years after 70 71 and 72
Dollywood Railfan, yes you are correct. I didn’t know that the Driving wheels under 70 are 72’s.
I've been on Cinderella for like 8 times when i went to Dollywood and lemme tell ya that it has a really good sound on the 4th and the 5th car
Middle Tennessee Railfan I’ve rode her 30+ times
I tend to sit on the or fourth car.
Great, great video! You are so lucky. From the 6:00 mark on is such great footage! :)
Its not under the FRA, so no.
Sorry, Crosby 3 chime.
r they still working #192 ?
i live within an hour of Dollywood and have been going my whole life I always ride the train im 15 does anyone out there know how to get a cab ride please rply
Matthew Stogsdill same!
They don’t do cab rides anymore.
@vdrl60 Well, To be Honest I Think There are Already Enough Colors On The Engine... And The park was Closed to The Public, So There Really Was No Purpose for the Flags
@pennyf9 It Looks Better this Way, But it Could be Better.
Sir, your information is incorrect.. That is a Crosby 3 chime. While there has been a PRR 3 on 70 in recent years, this is not it.
will the #182 go back into service? That's my engine.....
John Jones I live both #70 and #192 both great engines
Generic? Sir that whistle is a Pennsylvania Railroad three chime. Perhaps one of the most famous whistles in history.
She Has been Repainted already. Look Closely, You'll Notice The Yellow Paint on The Pilot is Gone. That Is How it will be painted for This Season.
You Cannot get cabrides.
288jh they used to do it am I right?
@@AppValleyRailProductions They stopped giving cab rides in 2001
Thank you! It Has a great Sound but Its not My favorite Of The Whistles. This Whistle (as Good as it sounds) Is a Bit Generic.. Ill Take a Handcock 3 chime Anyday..
thank you iv heard rumors
@PereMarquette1223 Nice. You Might, But It Is very Unlikely. Try Ancestry.com, They may be able To tell You. But Anyways, I like this Whistle, But its a Bit Generic... Its still a Nice Whistle Tho
John cena needs to get to Dollywood
192 I meant
MAX & RUBY
