I have failed every no-buy I've ever went on because I was using it to punish myself and I was thinking very black and white. This is so helpful, I wanna try again and be kinder to myself this time

I have done short term no buys and try to view them as a chance to use what I have instead of a punishment. Although usually they happen after I've don't a big birthday haul! So maybe kind of a punishment lol!!

If it's not a good time right now or if restricting is going to turn into a binge, it's totally cool to opt out! It's also ok if no-buys aren't for you. I do hope that whatever strategy you use in the future you can also be kind to yourself 💕

As a long time journaling person and someone who got out of a destructive habbit using journaling, if you want to journal about your journey of no-buy or buying habits or simply want a better coping mecanism, here's a couple of advice:
-you don't need to buy a journal, if a bunch of loose sheets or memo pads is all you got, that's more than enough to start. Don't use journaling as an excuse to spend more.
-don't journal everyday for no reason, you'll find it pointless and get discouraged. Only do it when it makes sense for you.
-trackers only work for a small proportion of people who try them. They never worked for me, but something else did (see the next point)
-try to replace a coping mecanism with another, in this case buying -> journaling. Everytime you really feel like buying, write. You can write about anything you want, it doesn't even have to do with the no-buy, it can be the lyrics of your favorite song if you can't think of anything and need a distraction.
-pick your favorite pen/pencil or even crayons if that's your vibe, you don't need to buy a pilot whatever or a zebra something something. As long as you enjoy your writting tool so that it encourages you to use it.
-if you do end up buying when you weren't supposed to, try to journal about the experience, about how it made you feel, why did you do it, what's the result of this spending, etc. Could be good, could be bad, what matters is making you write more and making you aware of your internal signals so you have more power over them and not the opposite.

Your "Don't use journaling as an excuse to spend more" of this comment really hit a chord with me. I did a very sobering calculation of the money I've spent on journaling (and its sibling planning) supplies in the last two years. Journaling started being a very useful tool to help manage my mental health, then in spiralled into a destructive cycle of spending both money and probably worse, time, on chasing all the journaling things - while not really doing much journaling itself.Same for planning: the money and time I spent on planning supplies had an inverse effect on the relaxation and productivity I get out of planning. My stationery stash is by no means as huge as some as I've seen online, but it's got out of control. I'm now systematically trying to use up all the things (or donate/sell them).

Yes! The other day I looked through my old journals and found one from 10 years ago where I wrote down what happened every day no matter what for like three months. Looking back, I was so busy writing things down that I didn’t analyze anything I was going through- not the best use of my time.

I’m going on an “Online Shopping” no-buy. Pre-pandemic, I was never much of a shopper, but after Covid I got really sucked into shopping online. So from now until October, I’m not going to buy anything online. If I really want the item, I’m going to have to drag my butt into the store. I know that most of the time, boredom+stress is an online shopping trigger, but most of the time I won’t be SO bored as to want to walk into a store to buy something. So, I expect I will spend significantly less.

I have technically been on a no buy since January with just a couple of slip ups but then in June I went through a big trauma situation and lost half my income. I am still trying to come to grips with that and I have spent some money figuring out new ways to do things to make life easier for me. I was going to jump in on your no buy as a reinforcement to the one I’m on, but then you said if you have been through a trauma, this might not be the time for a no buy. I think you’re right. I’ve had an entire lifestyle adjustment while also having a significant handicap. Although I can no longer afford to spend anything on anything frivolous, I also have to accept that I have had to buy a few products to make life work with my handicap. I’m going to observe from the sidelines while trying my best not to spend any extra money and to cut down on the monies I do spend as that is going to be necessary anyway. But at least I won’t feel any pressure and I don’t need any pressure right now..

I think a replacement only no-buy August would be a good idea for me. I'm not an overspender, but I DO spend too much time browsing online and buying every new makeup item that catches my eye at the drugstore. It's something I do to make myself feel better. While my browsing and purchasing do not get in the way of my financial goals, it definitely is a waste of time. I do not need yet another new lipstick!

I am in for a No buy August! I am fortunate in that I have a nice income, and savings, and money isnt an issue, but I spend ... a lot on things I dont NEED. And I think about how much MORE we could save if I did this even only a few times a year. BUT I will give myself grace - I'm not perfect and I do fly back and forth across the country twice a month, so I do have needs that can pop up as I travel that many do not. But as I am ALSO on a 'year of decluttering' voyage... so for this no buy challenge, for every item I purchase that I DO NOT NEED... I have to get rid of THREE items (real items, not hair ties or thumb tacks LOL). Great idea Shawna!

I started it because I had to move house, and got a new job that wouldn’t start until May (so two months without a pay check), I’m at a point where I don’t feel the need to buy most things (except replacing old shoes that ive had for 3+ years).

I have a no buy life. Not my choice. I have a chronic illness and very little income but want to live independently.
Its important to take time to look at your life as it exists right now, then decide where you have excess. When I cut down from full time to casual work, but found I was still buying clothes and make up at the rate needed for my full time job. Once I realised that that was for a life that no longer existed, I got focused on what I needed for living my current life. FYI I still have coats from my full time life and I quit that 12 years ago lol. I havent bought a new coat in 7 years. I do not miss it at all.

while my no-buy era has come out of need/major budget overhaul, something that really helps me is to keep a running list of stuff that i want but am not sure i want to spend the money on. i revisit that list maybe every other month (or whenever i add something to it) and prune off what was ultimately a temporary fixation. it gives me the space to not only really consider how that item will fit in my home, but if its something that i can see myself really getting use out of and enjoying. it also makes it really easy when someone asks me what i want for my birthday lol!

  • @beccaschlomann7592
    @beccaschlomann7592 5 місяців тому

I really love how you present this as flexible and to really consider if this is the right time or not. Of course we can always be more conscientious and aware of what we’re buying and whether it’s a need or not and whether we’re spending responsibly or not. But I do feel many people’s presentation of a no buy is very strict and with very few allowables. I tried to do one earlier this year and I did ok at first but I limited so many things that it felt kind of like a diet where I was like “I can have two tablespoons of creamer in my coffee and then no other sugar, no desserts or sweets, no processed food, no fried food, etc” and I’d do well for awhile and then eat something on the no list and then feel like a failure and have a hard time stopping. It was like that with shopping. I did great for a few weeks but then bought a little something and instead of learning from it or considering my constraints might be too much, I just quickly slid back into buying too much unnecessary crap. So I’m thinking a shorter no buy and more focused no buy list that’s aimed towards working on what my goals are and if I slip up, it’s ok, learn from it, and just continue on.

💛💛 Seeing others describe their previous attempts, I know I've done similar attempts to punish myself using a really rigid setup that would turn into shame when I would fail before.
I won't be doing one anytime soon for particular categories, but I've been in an unlabeled no-buy for craft goods for a few months now (knit/crochet as a hobby for near 15 years, the knitting groups are full of photos of yarn stashes and I feel compelled to downsize what I have because I have taken up so much space at home with my yarn and needles). It isn't a punishment this time, it is simply "I should really find a use for everything I already have and actually finish those projects before buying something else, with exceptions for purchases where substituting with what I have genuinely isnt an option".
When I no longer see yarn stashed away in four large piles across the house, I'll lift it (or if I am especially compelled for a special project, like baby blankets or large housewarming gifts), or if i use up my collection of illustration pens and alcohol markers I'll probably pick up more. Until then, I will probably continue to add to cart before abandoning it when I remind myself I have so much to finish already.

I love this video because it doesn't suggest that cutting out all unecessary expenses or going on an all-out no-buy is the only option. For me personally I've found that doing things to the extreme like cutting things out completely tends to always lead to a relapse into bad habits and sometimes even makes the problem worse. I've been focusing on slowing down, being more mindful of my actions and purchases in general and just making small adjustments as I go and I feel like this is going to be much more sustainable than a full-on no-buy in all aspects of my life (just the idea of that makes me feel panicky which is exactly the kind of mood that makes me want to buy things). I like that this video paints a no-buy as a positive thing rather than a punishment because I think that is a trap a lot of us fall into and I'm definitely taking inspiration from this in terms of being content and grateful even if I'm not planning a strict no-buy any time soon. Thank you for teaching mindfulness and knowing yourself rather than giving one-size-fits-all "solutions" and quick fixes, I've really found watching your videos helpful and inspiring.

I’m so glad this video found me, I’m doing a no-buy August too! I did one back in January (my version of “dry Jan” since I don’t drink 😅). I’ve been journaling for the last few weeks every night before I sleep to try to shake out some anxious thoughts and figure out where they stem from. What I found is that I thrift *a lot* as my “little treat” and tell myself it’s okay because it’s cheap and not creating demand for new things. However, I have a lot of “stuff” and while I’d like to declutter, I have a lot of guilt and eco anxiety about where the items go next (knowing that so much at thrift stores often doesn’t even make it to the racks! 😢). I want very much to break my overconsumption (even if it ~is~ secondhand) and start saving for the future so I’m hoping this is where that can start for me!

I just did a no buy for makeup in June and July. I've technically "failed" because I bought replacements for things that I ran out of or am about to run out of. I was going to make the purchase once it was August but then ulta had a coupon for $20 off that was expiring before August. So I don't actually feel like i failed because it was an informed purchase I would have made in a week anyways.

Thanks for the video. I've been doing a no buy for a few months, but this month I made some purchases that really got me feeling regretful and guilty. Even though it was very needed stuff (mostly replacements because my cosmetic products are all ending at the same time for some reason), it's hard to find a balance and compromise yourself without being too radical.

I'm gonna do a no buy for August for cosmetics, because I have way too much stuff that I need to use up first. I've started my personal "shop my stash" challenge anyways, so this should be easy. The only thing I'm gonna repurchase is my cleansing oil to remove makeup, because this is an item I genuinely only repurchase once I run out of it and I always only own one bottle at once. Same goes for cotton swabs.
Apart from that, I still have enough sunscreens, shampoo, conditioner, hair masks, leave-in treatments, face cleaners, toners, serums, moisturizers, body washes, soaps, scrubs and body lotions at home to not be in need of anything new for a while. Same goes for makeup, I have soo many lip balms, lip glosses, lip sticks, blushes and highlighters. And it's all very nice stuff. So I want to go through my collection, appreciate the things I already own and use them instead of going for the hunt for the next new shiny thing.

I think you’re right- I should view budgeting as an experiment every month. I’m going to track my spending without judging myself.

Gave me lot to think about. My last no but was a big fail 😫. I made decision to save money because I received a check I was not expecting and it’s a decent amount to go do something with like nice vacation. I’m really trying to get handle on spending and saving to have an actual budget I follow. So I’m taking these funds and setting up an emergency fund account. Allowing myself to pay off couple of small credit cards and cutting them up. The rest of this will be my emergency fund and August is “Budget” month set up a realistic budget and follow thru managing my finances vs a no spend but your the encouragement for me to do this ❤Thanks

My 2024 no buy year has turned into a low buy year. The first 3 months went super well but then I broke the rules and bought clothes and kindle books, my two biggest problem areas. However, I have drastically reduced the amount of them that I buy. I think this year I bought 5 pieces of clothing so far. I would have bought a few items every month in the past. Regarding the kindle books I simply ran out of the light reads that I fly through. As regards household bits and bobs I haven’t bought anything, or jewellery and the make up skin care we’re all replacements. So I failed my no buy year, but I think I have rocked a low buy year instead.

I have started a no bye on the 19. Juli. I have done no byes before for about 6 months and i have also failed alot, or done a long no bye period only to then when i finished bought way to much. This time isthe first time where i have written down what is allowed and what is not, because i know from experience that if i say my no bye is for clothes, then i dont bye clothes but then i start bying makeup or custom jewellery or sunglasses or, or,or😂. I hope that writing down what i can or cannot bye might help with that. And giving myself a budget of 100 swiss franks a month that i am allowed to bye what i have on my wishlist, some of those things kost more than 100 so i will have to wait months before i can bye them. I dont know how long it is going to be i hope atleast a year ❤

Oh how I wish this video existed in december of last year when I decided to do a year-long no-buy in 2024. Had to quit two months in because it had become a cherry on top of a pile of stress-inducing circumstances. Not to mention I have realized since then it had to be a way of punishing myself as, realisticly speaking, I don’t have a problem with shopping too much or overspending. What might be interesting, for me, as a person living my whole life in not-so-well-of country in Eastern Europe, I had to „translate” conditions of an idea of a no-buy I was presented by western, primarly North-American creators from yours realities to a version of „ours”, where even an extend of western Europe’s levels of living might be unattainable. But man, aren’t those images from social media blurring the reality…

after trackig my spending for a few months i realized that just online shopping is the killer for me. so i want to try in august only buying things i pick up in real life and try and see if i can get into that habit after my online shopping took over during the pandemic. also with a full time job and a long commute simply finding time to shop in real life might be a bit harder. and also help me with my habbits. (that being said i still need to not buy any books in agusut just as a blanket rule my to read pile is out of hand and i read like 12 books a month and i already own a years worht of books even with reading at that pace so i really need to slow down on that. ) (though if my favourite band does release specific merch they have been teasing i am allowed to online shop for those. )

Last year, I read a book that was a year-long journey of a family (parents plus, I believe, two kids under the age of 12) on a no-buy. For an entire year. I don't remember the title, but it was an interesting read, and it was the first time I'd really given strong consideration to no-buy time periods. I was also deep into reading books like Junkyard Planet and Secondhand by Adam Minter (highly recommend, by the way), about the cycles of our over-consumption and where things go besides the dump. Other than my business expenses, I might give August a No-Buy try.
