My system is better than I thought. From THIS video...I'm relieved that I stopped even using Facebook apps, and I never used any Amazon apps. I'm glad I'm NOT fun or interesting, so I have no difficulty leaving my mobile phones at home. That probably helps me, too. However... One thing I've always wanted someone to test was this: when a person turns off "Find My iPhone" or "Find My Device" or that kind of thing...does the phone/tablet/whatever ACTUALLY STOP pinging the Apple or Android "Find MY..." BLE mesh networks? We all know that these networks receive pings via BLE without even needing wi-fi or a cell connection. It sounds like "they" always "know" where are devices are and what they're doing. Is there a way for anyone to hear and identify one's OWN BLE signal from one's OWN device to find out whether it's on or not? This, as you know better than I, sounds like a very difficult thing to actually do. I have no idea how to do it. So...this is a BIG "ask." Perhaps you know resources and whom to ask about this. Meanwhile...you, your audience and I continue to stuff devices we aren't actively using into Faraday bags for our peace of mind. Mahalo for a really thought-provoking video! Much aloha to you.
I was thinking of that too and seeing how GrapheneOS works... To install Pi-Hole can be complicated if you are not familiar with Linux or Docker, which is why I haven't done it. It can get complicated quickly, but I do see tutorials on UA-cam which you can follow.
The bottom line is that as long as you use a phone that requires a login account that identifies you to work you will have no privacy on your phone. This applies to both Android and Apple. It doesn't matter what 'privacy' stuff that Android or Apple say they have on their phones, your identity and usage is NOT PRIVATE FROM THEM. They'll hide your activities from third parties, but not from themselves. The only way out of this is to use a phone that works without a personally identified account - which has your real name, address, date of birth. This is impossible to do on an Apple phone - Apple phones can't work without an account. Privacy can be done on some Android phones if you get one that has an OS that is based on the Android Open Source Project, which has no personal account and no Google tracking software and no Google aps, so you can preserve your privacy from being personally identified. There are some OS that are based on ASOP, such as Lineage OS and Graphene OS.

no panic - most of Apple‘s (Finder, etc) and third-party app‘s connections to Apple Inc.‘s servers are icloud-related app sync or e.g. location-based services or messaging (e.g. web api updates by phone sensors and/or internet servers, for instance, a mail server update announcing new incoming mail…) We live in modern times, and though the sheer volume of connections via dns only might be shocking for end-users, it definitely isn‘t for developers. Social media and e-commerce apps are also very telemetry-heavy, to which you gave legal consent when accepting their respective usage terms… let alone those from Apple various device OS‘s. It‘s ‚conditio sine qua non‘ - means mobile sevices are simply not happening without its precondition.
These videos are great when it comes to information as well should be on the news ie main stream media so people can protect themselves more so the ones who are not tech savy.
I own Little Snitch on Mac, and it does protect against many garbage connections. But a lot of things it tries to block actually disrupt the Mac's normal operation.
A really good thing to do, is to setup Pi-Hole on a Raspberry Pi (any RP works) and connect it via an Ethernet cable to your home router. Then setup PiVPN on that very RP and connect your devices to that PiVPN via WireGuard. Now you have just built your own ad blocker and self-hosted VPN. If you go outside, even on a different country, your device's IP will always show as if you are still at home, thus taking advantage of the Pi-Hole's ad blocking capabilities even outside your home network.
I wonder if the strange Settings tracking 9:35 has anything to do with handoff? I think it said it uses your iCloud account, so you can pick up where you left off, on other Apple devices. if you turn handoff off, does it stop?
only looked at DNS and if you use a web browser to log into anything, you are still being tracked via the browser (but it will have less info than with a fully installed app)
So seems almost all the connections an iPhone makes (without 3rd party apps installed) are to Apple websites (for providing services etc.). From setting up a new iPhone I guess you can turn off things like analytics, personalised ads, etc. to reduce this traffic?
these are only DNS queries - why would Apple need to know when you swipe away notification? What would they need to know when you go into a setting? Yes of course some are to provide the service . But on a brand new setup with nothing installed there is no reason for so many queries to be made so often.
apple tracks notification information because they eventually make suggestions to their users whether they should move the notification to ‘scheduled notification’ to avoid distractions if an app is sending a lot of notifications and the user is simply dismissing them all the time … I have ADHD and personally find this suggestion really helpful because notifications overwhelm me sometimes and I forget that I can set them to be shown to me only at a time on my choosing. So, I actually really appreciate this feature from Apple. And it’s the little quality of life things like these that keep me with Apple. it’s kind of similar to gmail suggesting you to unsubscribe from an email newsletter if you tend to never open and read them.

Could be and good thinking. But that doesn't explain why when you just go into your settings on your phone it communicates with Apple. That doesn't sync with anything...
Excellent video, great investigation. The spurious data is for R&D, it’s not monetised or shared. The manufacturers have done this for years. The social media apps suck as much personal data as legally possible. So many UA-camrs say turn off manufacturers settings but they are using the data to develop your next dream handset.
there no question that they need data to make the apps work and of course to analyze behavior and usage etc. But there is an overreach of just how much is tracked. I am not aware of any audits done to ensure that this data remains internal but I suppose they just point to the Terms and Conditions and I am sure its in there that we agree to let them use the data...
Makes me wonder if we didn’t have all these phones - would the people working in big tech be professional stalkers for a living? Maybe they should get over their parents divorce and or mommy & daddy issues
A lot of these connections are for caching information from the services (like itunes, music, news, stocks, findmy, icloud, appstore etc), to provide a ‘snappy’ user-experience. Finally there is some telemetry data (splunk-nec) for apple to know how they’re doing with their sync and to detect service degradation issues on their end and to figure out if you’re a customer with slower internet connection or fast internet connection. This is tracked because Apple does a staggered auto-updates (if auto-updates are enabled) and this helps them determine what the best day and time would be to push an update to your phone.
