In the past, Godox made gear that worked but was poorly designed. Product design is important and, as of now, Profoto is the Apple of off-camera lighting. With Godox, their design department is improving their latest gear. This is exciting. Though not yet at the level of Profoto, Godox is putting Profoto on notice.
They do have the color temp and different color gel you can snag. the v-11t and v-11c. I think the ak-r16 gives you another magnetic ring that’ll let you sandwich a color gel in between 2 clear plastic thingies. EDIT shoulda surfed the comments.
Strongly agree about the Godox round magnet setup. The only ones that really interest me are the dome and the gel holder, and I don’t want to waste money on the (pretty expensive) AK-R1 kits getting multiple barndoors I won’t use. If they sold the items separately I’d snap more up. I actually think the AD100 Pro makes a ton of sense as a new category. If you’re doing the strobist shooting with a bag full of speedlites approach, saying “hey, I won’t ever attach this to a camera, let’s get rid of that shoe mount and make it smaller and lighter” seems a pretty idea. The problem is the price, with the V1 and especially V860 being significantly cheaper.
It seems weird to me that a company that makes so much cheap and trivial stuff as they do didn’t just release a whole pile of individual items for the magnetic mount. So bizarre, and such a missed opportunity. 🤷🏻♂️
Damian Robertson, Adorama sells each of the AK-R1 kit items separately (barndoors, grid, snoot, dome diffuser, wide lens, bounce card, & the original plastic gel set); I just checked, they still sell them separately (www.adorama.com).
@@WesPerry , Adorama in the US sells all of them separately (as well as Godox's 15-gel round color temp set, & their 15-gel round color set); I don't know if they ship to Canada, though. Good opportunity for Strobepro to import them..
I was considering getting a couple of AD100’s but to be honest the price doesn’t match my usability. I would have used them outside but after seeing your review Wes, I’ll stick to what I have. Keep up the good work Wes 😊
To your point on gels for the akr-1 kit, i believe they have gel kits now. Godox v-11c and v-11t. Just thought i'd share. Entertaining and informative reviews bud! Keep it up
I bought the Godox AD 360 for $250, and the Yongnuo YN200 for $170 and both are using the same great umbrellas, modifiers,... And the Yonguo has even a USB charger... Both, I can combine easily,... You stick the Yongnuo remote control on the Godox remote control... But you need an S3 bracket for the AD100, no modifier fits from the normal Flashlights... And the normal Godox Flashlights with LIthium cells don't lose power with HSS... The only advantage is that it is smaller than the AD200...
Oddly, Adorama had a sale around Thanksgiving for a few hours on a Xplor 300Pro at the same price as this 100 ($299). Tough sell on the price. This might be an affordable and useful flash once the price comes down.
I love my Ad300. And I had the Ad200 for years. The Ad300 with its godox mount makes Everything smaller. This would be awesome but it's pricey for people. I'm excited to get it to review though
I feel like it was a little unclear - shutter speed doesn't really affect how much flash exposure gets into the camera, it's just that when you get over 1/250s (on most cameras) the shutter curtain needs to get smaller in order to let less light in, so if you go above, you will get black bars on your photo. It's not really an issue, it's how all flashes work, and HSS will always consume more power. That's because it's not one "pop", it's super fast stroboscopic light, and because of that less power. Either do as you do and use a ND, or get more flash power if you need to be outside or have a faster shutter speed.
@@WesPerry I may be lost in translation, but you say in the video that "shutter speed should not affect how much flash exposure is coming into your camera", and it most definitely does when you get past sync speed 😊
Love the intro. Looking at upgrading my lighting (using two old Yongnuo 685 right now). 2x AD 100 pro and an AD400 pro should be plenty for weddings right? Hows the 100 work with distance? Like how far are you getting away and still overcoming bright conditions? Thanks dude!
AD100 is very good for distances since it can be focused in narrower internally. The 400 just has a fairly wide pattern with the stock reflector regardless.
They don't even have a CTB gel for their system, even with the AKR1 kit. I was convinced I had lost mine from my kit when I wanted it, but found out later that it never existed. They supply a handful of gels with CTO but the blue ones are just harsh blues. If they were going to supply any gels they should have supplied a -green gel to get rid of the native green cast.
I was really excited for this light, but I was expecting it to be about 2/3 of the price of the AD200. WAY too overpriced for mine, but a great little option.
Thanks for review! I think wedding photographer prefer buy three godox tt685 ($100) instead of one ad100pro ($300). Three flashes can light different parts of big room and can fire faster, than one flash.
Wes - I shoot a lot of food indoors - I usually use available light near a window and I do fine. But I want a small light and diffusion that can be used in a small area. A lot of people would say it’s the best tool for off camera flash at wedding receptions. It’s not amazing for outdoor work. Not quite enough power for much of the day. Although there are ways of making the most of that.
I enjoy your style of reviews Wes, so thumbs up again. I like the idea of the AD100 pro, but not the price. Interesting that it has pro after the 100? Personally I think it will appeal to people buying their first flash and like you state event togs, but for togs who have a few Godox flashes I am not convinced. Will it sell well? I guess time will tell.
Yeah, it would be a good even photog starting kit to get a few of them. But for someone who already has a few AD200's, I doubt it has That much appeal.
Hey there, how're you? maybe you can helpmeet with a question. I have a pair of AD300Pros and a X-Pro Trigger, and for now have no light meter, so I want to use the TCM function. Yeah, they really need to update the firmware to account for the 300, but unfortunately it doesn't look like they're going to. On my Sony trigger there's also a 400, but still no 300. I would say simply try the 200 setting, and if that doesn't work, go for 360. Either will work, but just depending on how much power output you're going to be using, one might work better than the other for your particular needs.
Just brought the AD 100 but I am having difficulties getting more that one flash when synched! When I depress the synch button, I get the synch sign but after one flash it goes off and I have to depress the button again. Can you say what I may be doing wrong?

I don't get why the colour temp for the AD100pro is around 200k higher than most other godox flashes, surely that just makes them more awkward to use in conjunction with other godox models?
It seems you never came back to elaborate on your hunch what the second mount is for. Probably it has to do with clearance and the on-camera application might justify the off-centre mount?
@@WesPerry You mention on-camera usage and the ability to use the flash with a clamp but you never explicitly refer to the second mounting point again. So I'm unsure what you mean by "later in the video". BTW, it would have been interesting to see how evenly the head illuminates a modifier, particularly compared to the AD200's bare bulb option.
Yeah, it was mounting on camera and such that I was speaking of. You definitely want a double diffused softbox to get the light to bounce around a bit better. Maybe a test for another day ;)
It’s a MOZA Slypod E. I was trying something new, being able to zoom my top view camera in and out with my phone while talking. But apparently I would need a much bigger and beefier tripod to make that work, because it just wiggled way too much, and was unusable when moving. Back to the drawing board! 😉
Godox is a couple mm larger in diameter. The Profoto mods do work magnetically but will block some light around the edges of the Godox unit. Also mixing Godox & Profoto mods doesn't really work that well if at all because of the magnets polarity. The "New" Profoto mods are much stronger magnetically to secure on both systems. BUT I still use an XL Ranger Band (3 1/2" flat) to wrap around the head and mods for extra security.
The AD200 or YN200 is thinner and in many cases can be more compact. So anything with a thread can be mounted in any of the configs this can BUT, the new AD200Pro does have that little modification that locks it in from spinning. I take it they didnt do that on the AD100Pro? lol..??FAIL?
@@WesPerry Ok, at least they didnt forget that. Keep in mind before Godox became popular the AD600 sold for about 390$ then Flashpoint stepped in and ruined it to the tune of double profits. I wonder what happen to Hcteeah and a couple other roductions of these lights? Glad to see Younguo still is allowed to make things for less. And as far as transmitters, the pro with the view display at the viewerfinder or camera dispaly is they way to go, not the display on top, nor the one without direct A-E buttons. Good video regardless.
I definitely agree that Godox has lost a lot of its value cachet. And while the Pro branding was cool at first, even that has been diluted of late, so I’m not really sure what the point is anymore...
Yes indeed. But I didn’t notice at the time because I was texting the flash on it’s own, and when it’s not used mixed with other lights it’s much less apparent.
Depends what you mean by portable. I generally wouldn’t recommend anything less than 300 or 400 watt seconds for regular outdoor use. I generally stick to the 600 pro outside, because I know it’ll do the job.
Time to stop going by WS buddy, that's misleading as hell, GN is definitely a better way to gauge the amount of light received albeit one actually needs to know the conversion and tricks manufacturers resort to in order to obtain a higher GN, why is GN better? because it kinda tells you just how much of light you're getting at a specific distance in a certain setting, WS don't do this, it just gives you the size of the engine but not really the speed capability or acceleration capability of the engine. GN does this.
I can’t say I ever use a flash in a manner in which GN is relevant. It’s never just firing straight at my subject. Always bounced or diffused, making GN irrelevant.
Youngnuo is absolute crap. I’ve had 3 out of my 5 die under very gentle use. And it costs more than $100 round trip for servicing in China. No service center in USA
Greetings, since you mention the yongnuo yn200 flash I had a doubt if this flash works with the xpro trigger, it is compatible with the X system, thanks for the video and your videos, greetings from Mexico

I did! It was later in the video!
Maybe a test for another day ;)
Seems like a powerful little light, but anyone can tell me what is that horizontal bar on the tripod back there?
It’s a MOZA Slypod E. I was trying something new, being able to zoom my top view camera in and out with my phone while talking. But apparently I would need a much bigger and beefier tripod to make that work, because it just wiggled way too much, and was unusable when moving. Back to the drawing board! 😉
@@WesPerry Thanks man! I do product photography so I'm always looking for rigging gears for more flexibility.
@@qifanchang1965 I love the Slypod, with it's compact and easy to pack form factor, but I really need a stiffer tripod to keep it still.
Does Godox stobe header diameter is same size as Profoto? can we use Profoto modifier on Godox?
I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to that one.
The AD100 does indeed have that same locking mechanism, on Both mounting points. You can see it in the video.
@@WesPerry Ya, that thing should be $89.99 :-) maybe
Wellllll...
Green cast?
Yes indeed. But I didn’t notice at the time because I was texting the flash on it’s own, and when it’s not used mixed with other lights it’s much less apparent.
Does anyone know if ad100pro is sufficient for autofotography?
All depends on how you modify it. But in my experience auto photography usually uses very narrow apertures, which takes a lot of power.
@@WesPerry Soo bad, but you're right. Would have been nice. Thx 🙏
Excellent review. It still looks to me that the color temps across Godox strobes can be wildly different. Makes it hard to mix and match?
You’re absolutely right. The Pro ones used to be pretty consistent amongst each other, but the 200 and 100 Pro not so much.
It’s not even close to the temp of the 300, as you can see in my image samples.
So what is the best flash can you recommend for HSS? Portable ones.
Depends what you mean by portable. I generally wouldn’t recommend anything less than 300 or 400 watt seconds for regular outdoor use. I generally stick to the 600 pro outside, because I know it’ll do the job.
They're moving up to LED lights.
It Plastic for a reason. It help to dissipates the heat
Umm...plastic blocks heat dissipation compared to metal.
Watt-second is a unit of energy, not power.
That’s correct
But also: 99.99% of people don’t know that there’s a difference and if I said energy would be unnecessarily confused.
So power it is.
I think it's over price
This is for people with GAS
It"s 195$ now )
$437 where I live 🙄
i was super excited for this review but then...I realized this flash got not that much sense to me. Anyway, great review as always!
Hey, they can’t all be the one! 🤷🏻♂️👌🏻
LMFAOOOOO killed it
🔨💪🏻😂
Buen dia es mejor el AD200 PRO que el AD100 PRO
First 🙏
Isn’t it past your bedtime? 😏
@@WesPerry shhh 🤫
u kinda look like one punch man
You’d better not mess with me then 😏
for s guy who shoots. often the subject is out of the frame and showing his bald head.
If only there was another guy who shoots in the room to fix that 😂
@@WesPerry Production tip 101: Shoot wider.. In post scale to fit.
too much overpriced product
Youngnuo is absolute crap. I’ve had 3 out of my 5 die under very gentle use. And it costs more than $100 round trip for servicing in China. No service center in USA
Yeah, that’s kindof my experience as well, so I wouldn’t really recommend them 😬
Greetings, since you mention the yongnuo yn200 flash I had a doubt if this flash works with the xpro trigger, it is compatible with the X system, thanks for the video and your videos, greetings from Mexico
Oh no, it’s a separate system. Just comparing based on price and performance.
