I do not think one should lay the whole of the blame for the witch hunts on religion. Much off it was crowd control plain and simple. People had to little to eat, they where angry and when the crops failed or other misfortune happened, pointing the finger towards some person, often someone who was disliked in society, and saying she did it kept the crowds from turning their anger to the authorities.

Absolutely, but for some reason they thought the fire would purify the soul so that the witch would go to heaven instead of hell...Of course, she'd be dead either way.. Much like with the water test: They tied up the woman and threw her into the sea; if she floated she was a witch and was executed, if she sank, she was innocent. Drowned, of course, but innocent... That's the Middle Ages for you :)
