  • Perhaps the most iconic 100 mile race in the world, Western States is an ultramarathon that starts in Olympic Valley, CA and ends in Auburn, CA. The race traverses extremely rugged and remote terrain. With over 18,000 feet of climbing and, on this day, recorded temperatures of 106 degrees Fahrenheit, it is known to be one of the most grueling races in the world.
Because the race is capped at 320 runners, many people will never get into this race. The race offers a lottery that runners can enter only after running a qualifying time at certain 100K or 100 mile races. The current average wait to get into the race is over 7 years.
The race has a 30 hour cutoff before runners "DNF" (did not finish). For these reasons, runners push with all they have to finish the race because it may be their only chance to become a "Western States Finisher."
The final hour of the race is known as the "Golden Hour." This is when runners muster all the energy they have to finish before the cutoff. It showcases some of the most inspiring and endearing moments of the human spirit. To finish this race, runners must be physically and MENTALLY strong.
With just 5 minutes left in the race, cheers were heard down the street as a runner made their way toward the finish. Sean Mullett entered the track and was obviously exhausted, dehydrated, leaning to his right side, and hardly coherent. He walked, and tried to run, toward the finish to try to make the cutoff as time ticked away.
A crowded arena filled with supporters, crew, finishers, and spectators cheered as Sean inched ever closer.
A moment I'll never forget as Sean and the spectators displayed the best of humanity in a triumphant finish.

He doesn't finish when he's tired. He finishes when he's done

Dehydration, back spasms, exhaustion, and likely other reasons.

Must disagree...this is NOT the most incredible finish. You should look for vids of gunhild swanson’s 2015 WS finish. Watch that and then we’ll debate. LOL.
Btw, super jealous you were there this year to partake in all that WS100 has to offer.

I just looked that one up. I would say that is incredible in a different way, but truly amazing, as well. Western States was an awesome experience!
