My first Dobsonian was a 10" First Light which weighed 61 pounds. Being elderly and feeble, I was unable to drag it into the back garden. I then bought a Sky-Watcher 6" Virtuoso. It was nice and light.
Hi Tiago! Thanks again for a wonderful video! I now have a Sky-Watcher 200mm Classic Dob for about 2 years now! And these are my modifications: A Telrad I built a platform to allow me to move my telescope around my 2 third story balconies, without waking up my neighbors! Installed Bob’s knobs for my secondary mirror, Made a cardboard shroud 21 inches long to cut out the light from my neighbors, Installed an Antares 2” low profile focuser which really makes a difference, Made may self cardboard setting circles for the base of my telescope, which I really hope will help me locate different objects in the sky ( I live in really light polluted skies) And today I installed my new replacement spider from Backyard Universe, which I really hope will make the star spikes more beautiful! I have decided to keep on the Dobsonian path, as it is more realistic for someone like me! Thank you again for your wisdom! Leonid
I think that we are! I was very touched by your story about how you and your family got on this path. During Covid I had gotten into the hobby after some 40 years with a Celestron 90mm Astromaster, then by luck after making a beautiful painting frame for my brother in law, I picked up the Dobsonian. One thing led to another and I sold my 90mm to my friend, and picked up a 81mm ZenithStar Apo. For this telescope for my birthday I received a ES 30 mm 82 degree eyepiece…. But then I put it into my Dobsonian….. and it changed my whole perspective on astronomy. The simplicity of the Newtonian on a Dobsonian mount I think is magical…. I love refractors, but…. the price, the constant upgrades to the mounting system, has changed my opinion. I am visual, so for me consolidating my eyepieces was my first consideration. But after that, the view through a Newtonian for me has become mystical….
I sold my 6in Dobsonian as it was not grab and go so, I never used it. Table top Dobsonians need a table. I have a SkyWatcher 80 on an Alt-Az tripod which I can grab with one hand and be observing in a few minutes. I also have a small 70mm F10 refractor which I can also carry out in one hand. Yeah, I can't see dim DSO's but I don't care. The best scope is the one that gets used.
It's been a year since I found out about your channel, you inspired me to buy a Dobson telescope, and I couldn't be happier with it, thank you very much Tiago for your videos
While i have a Bresser refractor 80/400 Go To telescope as my deep sky telescope my 150/1400 Newtonian telescope is simply amazing and very powerful. It's just that it has a equatorial mount instead of a alt azimuth one so you first need to understand the equatorial mount. Sometimes i ignore it though and just use it and it's definitely amazing. Whenever somone says astrophotography can't be done with a Dobsonian telescope, tell them that astrophotography can simple be a smart phone with binoculars or a camera on a simple tripod.
Nice video. I have a 110mm dobsonian telescope, which my son made from 3d printed parts and a mirror kit. The dobsonian is clear and gives great views of the moon and planets.
Thanks for a informative break down with these telescope mate. I have a Dobson 12” 1500 mm long ( I think it was called Bt 302 from memory) with a few mods to it I did myself. Thanks again👍🇦🇺
I like the convenience of my 90500 Bressler refractor - I can carry it and tripod in one hand or backpack, no collimation required, and easy to shoot photos by attaching cellphone. I live in an apartment and if I had to carry a dob and tripod in separate trips to the roof, it wouldn't happen nearly as frequently.
Hello sir. I have a query I am making 6" f/7 Newtonian telescope at home with the budget of 126$ with everything including mount. But i don't know which glue is best to stick my mirror. Google is telling me to use epoxy Adhesive but i am not sure that using it is a good idea or not. So, could u plz tell ur opinion. I will be glad to hear
Hello! Thank you for your amazing videos! I'm making my own dobsonian telescope, I'm polishing the mirror right now, 250mm. Also searching the other parts to buy. Witch focuser do you recommend me?
@vic1984 depends on budget and your location. If U.S.A. feathertouch is good brand. I use low profile because of my style of observation with focal reducer and camera
It’s been right at a year since I bought my 8” dobsonian. I haven’t been really able to take any get any astrophotography. I tried to pair my old dslr but that’s not gotten me anywhere. Recently I was somehow able to get my cellphone to lineup through the eyepiece and get a picture of M42. I was very excited. I’d love to have a go to telescope. Maybe I’ll look at this smaller 6” with a go to?
You need an astro camera from ZWO. You can take pictures of planets and moon without tracking but you either need an eq platform for your 8" or that 6" goto. If eq platform available i would go for it and pull the power of your 8"
The 10 inch is amazing, but It just doesnt fit in my convertible. Not without something banging into things and risk of damaging it. Ive gotten it to fit snuggly in a decently sized SUV, and a pick up truck is also a game changer. I think people should at least invest in an OTA carrying bag so they dont risk damaging things if they have to put it in smaller vehicles!
Hi there, i am thinking of getting 10” dobs but later i level it down to 8” coz of its wt. I have also quite interest in AP but guys from cloudynights says I can’t with my telescope. What can i expect from 8” scope? Can I capture galaxies and nebulas from 8” or should I consider 10” scope. I know i need tracking mount and thinking of eq6r in future.
Hi there again, I actually followed your path in astronomy by buying 10” dobs for my endeavors. I have been enjoying the view. Now i want to capture some basic pic with it so i attached my aps-c dslr with it to take moon photography. But i can’t achieve the focus on it and moreover moon won’t fit in my frame. I tried to use barlow then i can focus on moon but it won’t fit as a whole. What should i do now? 😢 Do i need to buy astrocam for it? Plz advice.
@@DobsonianPower thanks go for the 6” go to? Astrophotography is 2nd priority is looking live through the eye piece with my 5 year old. We both love the night sky so this is our first scope
@CiaranMal1 yes. You can use it without electronics to have fun letting him point. Just loosen the 2 clutches. Then slowly you can learn the go-to app better.

The Dobsonian path it's the magical and deep one to follow. ✨️ We're on the same boat
