If the puzzle creator ever reads this. I've solved a lot of sudokus from this channel. And your puzzle is the most beautiful one I've ever completed. I was wow'ing to myself the entire way through. I'm not very good at solving puzzles but even with all of the frustration of the failures it will have been worth it to have completed yours!

Is the setter a mathematician? This looks like the work of a mathematician that cares about aesthetics. That would explain the choice for renban lines instead of kropki dots.

Stunning - especially when you look at the thermos and arrows being resolved as sets of three the same in different boxes in the final solution. Look at how the 578s are distributed in the final grid too. And would you call the logic "a swordfish on sets" - the first time I've seen in a 9x9 grid, something which might work spectacularly well in a larger scale grid. It would be very hard to get a better implementation on this scale. Some solve ...

    • @Samhain_III
      @Samhain_III 2 роки тому +2

Not just the 578s in the final grid, there are only 3 different boxes in the final grid. Every other 3x3 box is a copy of those. Incredible symmetry in the final numbers, which probably made the setting easier.

Usually, when you get a swordfish, you either get it on the rows OR columns and have to apply the swordfish logic across the other direction, but here Sumanta created a puzzle where you get a swordfish from neither the rows or columns, and therefore you have to apply the swordfish logic on BOTH the columns and rows. Just truly amazing.

More interesting is that you get that swordfish via a positive constraint (where you see where a digit goes, as opposed to where it doesn't), here using the renbans. Swordfishes are typically created by negative constraints (there are swordfishes that use boxes instead), made both by and for digit eliminations. This is just stunning

An observation: While the 62 diagonal sum definitely seems to be the code to starting this puzzle, the Hi 5 can actually refer to two different things: 1) The 5 swordfishes in the puzzle; 2) The 5 different additional Sudoku variant rule sets.

Once you'd spotted the swordfish on 8s, you were asking the wrong questions. You needed to ask what happens to the 8s in the boxes where it's not on the line with a 9. There are enough 7s along with the swordfish to force 8 onto the arrow, and the 8s already placed tells you where. This gives you another swordfish on 8s, another on 9s and yet another on the 1s which must go on the arrows with the 8s. You did get there, but a tad inelegantly. The swordfish on 1s places 1 in box 9 on the X, giving you a 9 which resolves the fishes. The arrows that were not 9 had to be at least 5 (because 1 was on the other arrow in the row), but they all see 789, so they can only be 56s, and each must contain a 2, creating yet another fuzzy swordfish, and allowing you to rule out both 1 & 2 from the bulbs.
What an extraordinary construction this is. I can't think why, but I've developed a craving for a fish supper.

I just love the videos when Simon gets so excited and enthusiastic about the logic and the path through the puzzle. What a great puzzle - thank you to the puzzle creator. When I took a look at it I had a feeling that it would turn out to be a high-low kind of puzzle because of the way the bulb half of the thermo and the arrow half of the arrows aligning with each other. But what it was is much more impressive - and I feel as if I almost could maybe just about possibly see a swordfish and recognize it after watching Simon solve this puzzle. (There was another one in the past month or so with about 8 sequential swordfishes that was also so fun to watch and, I felt, very educational about swordfishes...) Thank you for this wonderful video - one of the best hours of my day.

What a masterpiece! Thanks Simon for solving it and sumanta for creating this! To be noted that the "X" between box 8 & 9 was not necessary to solve the puzzle logically. It could have been removed by the setter. Indeed, because all the 7 are placed earlier, when you understand that for both rows 2,5 and 8, one of the arrow pair should be 18, you can understand that the other arrow pair can only be 23 or 24 but in any case must contain a 2. And those 2 eliminate any possibility to place a 1 on a renban line in rows 1,4 and 7. And because of this elimination, and the swordfish on 1, you can place a 1 in box 2 which then resolve the puzzle.

100 minutes, but I got it. That was a feast of swordfish and truly elegant. I got through it almost the same as Simon. I was nearly stuck with some parts and found lots of 56 pairs that I ended up coloring just to see if that anywhere (made for a faster fill once I got one but didn't lead anywhere itself) and same for 34 pairs.

What a beautiful puzzle, at a really nice difficulty level! I loved how the patterns kept repeating and in the end each box has 2 others identical to it. I solved it in 37:34, after struggling for a while with a mistake in my arithmetic.. I don't remember using the 19 clue though, is it necessary? My favorite part was creating another swordfish-type pattern on the arrows with 9s and 8s
EDIT: I decided to solve it again seeing how powerful these patterns are and how few clues are needed. I didn't use the X or 19, and the 26 & 8 only made one small disambiguation each. The 62 is the real heavy-hitter (along with the swordfishes) for breaking in and the rest is wonderful little patterns. The more I dig into this puzzle the more I appreciate it

Hi. What a puzzle! There are some observations of mine that I would like to share. I think they are worth an investigation, and I think some rules can be deduced from these observations which can make such puzzles way easier to solve. My first observation is related to the boxes. If you look closely at the way that digits are arranged in each box, you can find three distinct arrangements (or patterns), each of which is repeated exactly 3 times in the whole grid. I would like to call those arrangements A, B, and C (corresponding to that of box 1, 2, and 3). To make my point clearer, I would say boxes 2, 6, and 7 are all identical and follow pattern B. Now, these three patterns have an extraordinary feature. They can be arranged in a row (as they appeared in the first row as boxes 1=A, 2=B, and 3=C). But they can be also arranged in a column-wise fashion (as they appeared in column 1 as boxes 1=A, 4=C, and 7=B). So their rows and columns are both compatible. But there must be some rules that we can use to prove whether the solution to a puzzle has such property or not, which in my opinion is worthful enough to be investigated. I should also say that these box arrangements remind me of tensors and I think that might be the way to deduce a rule for such property (just the way that the same digits cannot appear in the same row/column twice, incompatible box tensors cannot appear in the same row/column as well). Another observation that I had was that all digits of an arbitrary row of an arbitrary box appear in the same row in all other boxes but in a different order (i.e., 392 are in the same row in box 1, they appeared as 932 in the same row in box 2, and as 239 in the same row in box 3). Although, this property is exclusive to rows here and does not apply to columns. Thus I do not think that such property is obligatory for forming a patterned solution. But it might be a design trick that helps the puzzle constructor to make the puzzle. There were several other (lovely) puzzles on this channel that were patterned, like this one. If I recall correctly, The Aquarium was one. Anyway, thanks for the videos, and sorry for this long comment.

Around 17:00 == Simon identifies the 9-swordfish. I had penciled in the maximum possible numbers in the 62 diagonal -- 9s where possible, and noticing when 9s couldn't go on thermos, when 8s were required to top thermos, and 7s used instead -- and got 66 total sum. Then I did the 9-swordfish that Simon showed. It removed a couple of my 9s, that I had to replace with 7s, and got 62 -- the required sum.
I tried the 8-swordfish, but it turned out useless. I'd already ruled out all the 8s that it would have removed. Now that I've done the 62-diagonal and the 8s at the thermo ends, I'm stuck again.
A little later: 8s not on the end of thermos or paired with 9s on the purple lines, had to be in the arrows. That leads to 1+8=9, and a swordfish in 1s. It places the 1 next to the X.
Finally did it. I made a leap of logic: already having three 1s in the 19 diag, I saw that pencilling in 1s and 7s just happened to add up to the remaining 16. So I ran with it. I finally finished the puzzle. The final result consists of blocks rotating in cycles.

Been going through CTCs past puzzles as they have gotten me addicted to variant sudoku. I can’t complete every one and most of the time my time to complete is much longer than Simon or Marks. This puzzle was a very satisfying and enjoyable puzzle, not only because I beat Simons time by the most I have yet (finished at 36). But as soon as you see the swordfish on 9s, that gets you the swordfish on 8s and thus removes the degrees of freedom on the 62 diagonal, very pretty.

  • @markp7262

45:37 finish. For all of the swordfish logic that I DID find, I'm surprised that I missed the one placing the 7s in r3c4 and r6c7. It's funny, because I had noticed that the 7-9 pairs were max on the diagonal at the onset, and I kept saying to myself "if only I could establish those last two cells couldn't be 8-9s...". I did eventually spot it. One bit of logic which Simon worked around was about placement of 8s and 9s in the non-thermo boxes. Due to swordfish constraints, there are only two places for each 8 and 9 per box, either on the renban, or on the arrow. This leads to the "secondary" swordfishes, and the 1s looking into box 9. Also, Simon forgot that 8s had to go with 9s on the renbans, and missed out on pencil marks in boxes 4 and 7 because of that.
At the end, I was slowed by a missed pencil mark of a 4 in r4c3, leading to a broken puzzle. Fortunately, I was able to make a quick rewind and continue on my merry way.

Wow! Absolute insanity! I solved it (mostly) by myself (with the tiniest of hints as to direction from Simon). I got the long 62 (79779779) diagonal by myself after noticing the swordfish on 9's and the associated sword fish on the 8's a row above, then there were more swordfish. I quickly established where in the boxes 9's and 8's could go in each box. Hilarious how resistant this puzzle was - those damn 56 pairs and connecting the bottom 3 boxes to the top 3. Somehow I solved all the diagonals but had left the little 8 diagonal to near the end to resolve a 56 (it couldn't be 6). And how every puzzle on this channel just seems bizarre as to applicable logic. (I wouldn't mind a couple puzzles with the same logic / theme to them.) Thank you, Sumanta, for designing this gem and Simon for sharing it. I'm studying these puzzles like a branch of mathematics I'm trying to master (why I'm not sure or what better I could do with my energy I'm not sure, but I'm having fun. Maybe I should go learn complex variables - but that's not going to be coming up in my current career path.

Amazing puzzle. I am proud that due to watching Simon solving these puzzles in the last two years I was able to solve it in 37:05. By the way, the fact that after finding a swordfish on a number we find another one using the same number is not at all surprising, because this actually must happen in the remaining rows or columns (as long as we have enough columns left).

  • @PCForrest

    9:47
I immediately identified the swordfish on 9s and the corresponding swordfish on 8s. I then looked at the 62 little killer (the average 7/8 looked promising). It passes through five boxes, two of which have only one cell, three of which have two cells. The two swordfish eliminates the 8 and 9 from the two single cells so they had a maximum 7 each, leaving a minimum of 48 across the remaining 3 boxes (16 average). However, the thermos (combined with the swordfish) made it impossible for any of those pairs to hold an 8/9 pair, thus that 16 average becomes a 16 min/max, thus each box has to hold a 7/9 pair. The thermos determine the order and also fix three of the 8s. The other two cells on the little killer are then fixed with 7s. After that it was relatively easy to spot the 1+8=9 swordfish on the arrows leading to the 1/9 pair on the X. Then it's plain-sailing. I used a wee bit of colouring to disambiguate the 3/4 pairs towards the end.
A neat break-in and clever use of overlapping swordfish, but not as difficult as the 52-minute live solve suggested.

Wonderful puzzle. 38:18 for me. The beginning and end of your solve were great but in the middle you were slowed down by not using the original swordfish on 8s. e.g. r7c5 could never have been 8. This makes it much clearer that three of the arrows need to be 819.

46:00 for me. I don't know if I'd go as far as "gibbering awe", but it was definitely one of the most beautiful puzzles I've ever solved.
You could have seen what was going on with the 8s and 9s a bit more quickly if you'd pencil marked all of the rest of the cells that could have 8 or 9 in them after filling in the 62 diagonal (and remembering that the swordfishes eliminate several possibilities as well, which was missed initially in this video). That would have made it clearer sooner that you had the second set of swordfishes on 8s, 9s, and 1s.
But still, great solve Simon. And yeah, that puzzle is definitely a keeper.

I’m new to all this but I thought there were rather more swordfishes than Simon indicated. The 9s in the middle left and 8s in the top left initially, but after the magic of the 62 diagonal there was the resolved 7s in the right centre, 1s in the centres and 8s in the bottom right (leaving only the central squares left for another swordfish!) I adored this puzzle and was well chuffed to have done it in 90 minutes.

I would like to state very clearly that I would *definitely* tune in for a Resident Evil stream. I do understand, however, that you probably would like to have an audience comprising more than just me.
I do wonder if Little Nightmares and its sequel would tick both boxes. They aren't strictly puzzle games, but there are a few (very gentle) puzzles scattered throughout (a la old Resident Evil games, I suppose), while also being games that you'd enjoy on your down time by the sounds of it. They also have the advantage of being relatively short, clocking in at just a few hours each, which might be good for streaming and a short video series.

I've just started playing 'Patrick's Parabox', which starts as a simple sokoban puzzle but quickly goes multi-scale and recursive. What's always astonishing me is the high probability of Simon entering a digit N when he meant to enter N-1 or N+1. Maybe there could be a Simon mode of the Sudoku Pad where entering N prompts you to pick from N-1 to N+1 via mouse click or picking one with arrows and SPACE or ENTER. With special conditions for 1, 9 and 0.
As Simon is never off by 3 (at least I've not seen that) he must use the numbers on the upper key row instead of the numpad. The keyboard interface is actually all about using the numpad, isn't it?
I don't find it annoying or a thing that should change, it's just like a personal trait of Simon and I guess also a reason he turns off the conflict checker in the settings. Sorry if you feel too seen, Simon. Also, I don't extrapolate other traits or habits from observing this.
