  • I'm really interested in eyes, and one subject in particular that makes me happy about them in how we perceive color. Eyes are rad! Thus I decided to make a video about tetrachromacy. It's not talked about a lot, so I thought it'd be cool to do a lil crash course with some personal stuff mashed in.
    More about tetrachromacy:

    What kind of online tests did you do? Because if you are referring to tests that measure your perception of colors, it is impossible to create a test for tetrachromacy on a RGB screen, since they only can show the colors that a trichromat is able to see.
    12% of females are tetrachromats? I highly doubt that. If they really exist, they are much less common than 12%.

    I am curious if tetrachromats just see colors more vivid and detailated (IE instead seeing white tetrachromats see a combination of pastel pinks and pastel blues etc)
    Or can they see an extra color? Completely different from the ones I see?
    When I say "different" I mean in the way that red is different from blue, while pink is related to red. Do they see a new color that cannot be obtained by combining the existent colors?
    I am lazy, and so far I haven't seen a clear answer to this question.
    I've been trying to imagine a new color... and I failed. I wonder what it would look like.

    • @h3rteby
      @h3rteby 7 років тому +9

      As I understand it, in addition to blue, green and red cones, they also have yellow cones. That means that they can see the difference between "real yellow" and "fake yellow" which is red and green mixed together. So for them, computer screens would be unable to reproduce the color of a yellow flower for example. But yeah what it looks like to be able to distinguish between real and fake yellow is probably impossible for us trichromats...

    • @JanPBtest
      @JanPBtest 6 років тому +7

      No extra colour because that would require not only an extra cone type but also a rewiring of the visual cortex. Also, normal vision people under LSD don't report seeing new colours (but colour blind people do). I think you are right about seeing the fine distinctions clearly.

    • @cnisp7198
      @cnisp7198 3 роки тому +3

      tetrachromats dont really see more colors. only GOOD think they can do is uhh distinguish the yellows better by a tiny margin. cons are well, giving your kids 50 percent chance to be colorblind. also, male tetrachromats dont exist. being a tetrachromat requires you to have 2 x chromosomes which uhhhh, yeah that... also, only way you can tell you are a tetrachromat is by a genetic test, so dont listen to those people who have been *checked by an eye doctor*, because they are lying.

    I am male but pass the tetrachromat test, I think it can be learned... I work with color and even the slightest differences between colors are very noticeable to me. What I mean by it might be learnable is that our brains already have all the colors we will ever see inside of it...it just uses cones to detect light which triggers the brains response. And because we only have red blue and green cones our cones work together to create the rest of the colors we see. All it would take is cell memory for cones to start creating different combinations for the brain to work with. I think a 4th cone makes it a "born this way" thing rather than needing some type of training or what not. But also most people with a 4th cone do not even actually see more colors...often the fourth cone is just a defect cone with no benefits.

Men only have one x chromosome, so we can't get tetrachomacy this way. However, I did read a study that suggests 8% of men can have 4 photopigments, so perhaps im mistaken. This is exactly my favorite color too! Have you ever done a test irl? I relate like zero to some tetrachromatic experiences like seeing exponentially more light apparantly or seeing things in mosaic in terms of color or seeing strong color outlines on things. Or being exceptionally good with depth perception. Or seeing matching sets if things being slightly different in color. None of that! :( Unless I just can't tell what is the normal experience and what is an unusual experience, idk. Oh, or having a male relative with colorblindness so it's even possible the gene could be passed down onto you... I don't know of one...
      But this artist (forgot her name rn, Conceta I think) always puts so much purple and peach into her paintings and has a really pretty way of fading purple with green in her paintings. And they look very realistic to me. I have always been very into peachy and purply colors, especially very blue-ish purples. Especially what I perceive as halfway between blue and what people call purple! Which is what I call purple and is my favorite color. I've wanted peach and purple as my two wedding colors since many, many years lmao. I'm so confused. I want to be tetrachromatic so so bad. One reason why is because I just love colors very much. I really do. Another reason is perhaps an unhealthy one. I just want to be special so badly. I really do... I have always wanted to have some sort of special ability, some sort of advantage over other people. I'm not sure where this stems from. Pride, insecurity, convinced that I am overall an incapable person and an advantage is the only way for me to be good at something? I don't know. But I do really want to be special.

    all mammals where not tetracromats once upon a time. most have always been dicromats and primates are the only tricromatic group. only some aquatic animals and birds are tetracrommats.

    Congrats on being tetrachromatic. I thought 8% of people are? I believe I am. I always ace all the tests. What made me examine it is that I work with colors. I am a wood finisher by trade and have worked with colors in other mediums over the years. We see colors more distinctly. I would make a color sample for customers and they would say, looks great. I would be thinking, needs more green or red or whatever. It happened always for years that 20 years ago I started to look into why. Found tetrachromacy. We also see better in the dark, try it. I never need a light on to move around a room at night. It's believed to be genetic. Passed on through heredity. Unique thing my father was partially colorblind but my grandfather was also a wood finisher. Perhaps he had it and it skipped a generation. Sorry about being longwinded but most people look at me funny when I bring it up. Fun fact reindeers are the largest land animal that gets it on a regular basis. So they can avoid the yellow snow its believed. Have fun.

      If you are reading this, you do not have a functioning yellow cone in your eyes. Functioning tetrachromacy has only ever been documented in one woman, and all it does is allow her to more easily differentiate similar shades of yellow. Dormant tetrachromacy, on the other hand, where the yellow cone is present but doesn't function, occurs in 12% of women, and is the same gene responsible for male protanomaly (a type of red-green color blindness)

    Trichromate Humans can Create a mix of more as 200 colors and more are not Possible.
    Trichromate have RODs of 125 milllion Shades.
    and 10 million colors of Red Blue Green and Secondary Mixed of 200 colores.
    Humans are 200-Chromatic. of Mixed.
    lot of Birds have 8 or 20 Cones but this animals. cant mixe the color.
    so Birds are 20-chromatic. and Humans or Delfins. 200-Chromtic

    Tetrachromatic is... Father colorblind Red-blue.... The Mother Green-Blue...
    the Dauther have XX chromosom and cant repair it. the dauther of 2 colorblind
    have left eye. Red blue blind. and right eye. Green-Blue Coloblind
    dauther of 2 Colorblinds... so have 2 Diferent colorblind eyse.
    and Boys. get both eyes same colorblind...
    and this girls cant see one color. both eyse are red or Blue. becouse her eyse not same colorblind and her brain change Left and right. she think its
    Tetrachromatic. its Still Dichromatic. 2 Eyse colorblind...

    I am almost certainly a tetrachromat. My mother’s brother and my cousin (son of my mother’s sister) are r/g colorblind.
    I too, once made a comment that was ridiculed when I noticed “the sky looks really blue today!”
    I can see into the ultraviolet spectrum. I have literally had to ignore parts of two different college level physics laboratory experiments because they both involved measuring the wavelengths of visible light...and I could see about twice as much purple as my lab partners.
    On the plus side, it explains why I’ve never found haunted house attractions at all scary. They are all too well lit!

    You are not tetrachromatic. There are less than twelve people in the world who are truly tetrachomatic. There are other woman who have a fourth cone but it is entirely non functional. Those women see absolutely no differently than anyone else. Their cones are not plugged into anything, it's like having a pair of earphones that aren't plugged in. Also, true tetrachromatics barely see any differently than normal people. They do not see 100 million more colours than the rest of us. They simply are able to more easily distinguish between different shades of certain colours such as yellow. Something that would seem to be the same yellow to a normal person they would see as very slightly lighter or darker. They do not see outside of the human colour spectrum.

    My dad's has Tetrachromacy, a doctor gave him the test when he was in his twenties. Tetrachronacy is more common in women, in fact, women typically have better color vision then men period. Bad genetic conditions such as color blindness are profoundly MORE rare in women then in men. Conversely GOOD genetic differences are profoundly more rare in men. My dad got really really lucky in the gene draw, he's also a super taster and has abnormally sensitive hearing.
