Michondria is key to good health
Why is it that a person such as this, who has created and narrated so many informative videos as this one, and as a researcher and public educationalist has done so much to promote interest in this field - an area which could ultimately lead to disease eradication and longevity advancement - had to expire so damn early?!
I have been on a personal and amateur exploration of intra-cellular organic micro-machinery over the past year, and Lue's animated videos have a level of sophistication that make learning a complex subject easy without a textbook or even a knowledge of basic chemistry. If you are interested in the question of 'what is life' then I highly recommend anything that he and Harvard have put out.
So, hurry up and get on with this progress, all you scientists! I feel we are so short-changed by those of us so brilliant that they have to depart with their star from us so early. Robert Lue was just 56, yet I am only 59. Thankyou, and RIP Professor Lue, for your shine. 💜

Great video. I once was working on mitochondrial dysfunction focusing on some particular enzymes- came across this vi by chance as i'm teaching my son about the etc and other mitochondrial stuff.
This video is so interesting & informative as I have a friend whose daughter died aged 2 last year. It is very easily explained for the lay person. Thank you so much. 3:10

All drugs have to be analyzed for the damage to the mitochondria they cause (all drugs are damaging to a greater or lesser extent). When the mitochondrial toxicity is known, this informs the manufacturer what other drugs they can be taken with and which ones are contraindicated. Specific tissues are affected differently by different drugs: mitochondria destruction in nerves causes peripheral neuropathy; in the liver, it will cause elevated cholesterol levels; myopathy in muscle cells; anemia in RBCs. etc.

Friend has this. His cuz. Mothers sister son just died of als and ftd. Same age as him 75. Didn't grow up with stand out problems. Low muscle tone poor growth and cognitive problems

Ciprofloxacin messes up mitochondria! and most of the times women are given it for UTIs. This might be a major contributor

The book Power, Sex, Suicide by Nick Lane says that mitochondria basically MUST all match in mtDNA within an individual or disaster ensues. Dr. Lue seems to paint a different picture with his color-coded mitochondria. Am I misunderstanding this?

Doesn't the number of Mitochondria per cell vary from 10''s to 1,000's of Mitochondria depending the energy needs of the individual cell?

Is diabetes also caused by inefficient mitochondrias ? Or inefficient glycolysis which will reduce the glucose utilization in the cells which will make the cell resist further intake of glucose inside the cell.
As excessive sugar in side the cell is more harmful it is not absorbed from the blood ,there by raising blood glucose level, which is called diabetes
No, type II diabetes is caused by too great of a production of insulin over long periods of time as a result of which cells become resistant to it.
They do so so much more than just producing ATP :)
What else does mitochondria do that UUU are aware of?
@@GmanSach They are involved in an apoptosis pathway, which is critical for the organism to stay healthy. Or, in the immune system they help to generate reactive oxygen species which helps to kill pathogens :)

did anyone hear about the team that might of found that mutations are made and sperm also contributes mitochondrial dna , if this is true this could change alot about mitochondrial diseases
Mk yes I e seen on tv research stated that although rarer than maternally inherent mutations, paternal is possible
