    Question time:
    Is the second phosphorylation of fructose also connected to the idea of making the ring easier to break? If that is the case, how does this other phosphate group influence it and why is it needed?

      I think it might rather have something to do with shifting the carbonyl group from C1 to C2 in step 2 (by phosphohexose isomerase), and then this C2 carbonyl is *stabilized further* by attaching that second phosphate, because it makes a *resonant structure* with that carbonyl (fuzzies the double bond). This in turn makes it easier for *reversing the aldol condensation reaction* by aldolase in the next step. Electric repulsion between those two phosphates sounds less plausible to me, since it can be screened by the protons in solution quite easily.
