  • This AUS penalty corner goal goes to a video referral for the obstruction on the goalkeeper. It can be very difficult to track so many crucial pieces, especially when you as the controlling umpire are close to the action and can include less information in your peripheral vision.
Close communication with your supporting umpire will help you get the right decision when you don’t have a video referral to fall back on. Their focus must be on all the off-ball potentialities that may emerge and using radios or a stop-time consultation to get the call.

I played hockey with Simon Taylor, here in NZ, at high school and his Dad was a very good ref too

So this was called an obstruction by the Australian attacker, resulting in a free hit and not a goal? Is that what I'm reading?

If you watch the video that's what is called, yes, and is the correct decision.

doesn't the foot from india count for sth (advantage)?

    • @FHumpires

Not sure what "sth" means, but the advantage is played from that foot so if AUS fouls afterwards, you don't go back to the PC. That gives AUS two bites at the cherry as they say.

@@FHumpires Thanks for clearing it up! ("sth" is an abbreviation for "something)

    imagine no VAR

Easily done, since VAR doesn’t exist in hockey. We have VR or VU, video referrals/reviews done by video umpires. Don’t apply terms from other sports that are associated with systems that don’t work: our sport deserves better. 😊
