This video right here is a true public service.... super helpful, explained well, and in total shock it has only 3.4k views considering it is the only one I could find in the last 2 hours... although granted considers time wasted trying aluminum foil wrapping/unwrapping techniques among others to stop/block competing RFID signals. Surprisingly, could not find anything that worked. I REALLY appreciate your help getting my 2004 Honda Pilot back on the road after the unfortunately common ignition cylinder failure, right out of the blue!!!!
After I did what you showed me everyhing, I took my car to Honda dealer and walked to parts department and have new Honda's key programmed and cut for $37.66 per key. They provide Honda key and program them for that much money. Then I went back home and removed the old key from the immobilizer , removed the ignition switch, attached the immobilizer to the ignition key, then install the ignition switch to the steering column and back on business. Thanks again.
Just a big thanks for taking your time to post this. After 14 yrs and 334,000 mi on my Element the key assembly gave up the ghost. The key would not enter all the way. Ordered a cylinder with two keys for $16.00. Swapped. Was going to get two new programmed keys and cut to the old key. You right here saved me well over $100.00. What you did worked great for me. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video - especially the part about using the old key and transponder part. I was able to replace the ignition switch unit, I wrestled with the bolts and was able to get them loose with screw driver as chisel and hammer - not too bad. I did use your method for bypassing the new unit's transponder. Even the locksmith I talked to, who was helpful on the phone, was impressed with this approach. I can start the car now and get it to the locksmith for reprogramming if I choose to do that - may just leave the ring + key taped together, hanging as you are doing OR at least I can drive to locksmith for reprogramming - much cheaper than having him come to me. Thank you again - so happy and grateful to you and the youtube community!
Took the risk on a used one from East Park Auto in Hyde Park NY Just under 100 bucks .Works Great ....They have a store on ebay although i picked up local. I Used a Forrester bit and a hammer and it removed the sheer bolts immediately. Just remove the 4 steering column bolts to lower it,That will give better access. Took longer investigating on youtube then the 1 hr it took to fix this ignition problem start to finish..It is sickening That dealers charge so much...
As a locksmith, i can assure you that the programmer we use is not a $300 Chinese knockoff.. I paid $10,000 for the programmer I have because it does every vehicle and does them right.. I charge $50 per key/fob to program plus trip charge to go out to wherever the car is at.. It's not worth a ton of money, but someone charging you $100-$150 to program your keys surely isn't a 'scam'..
corpuswala, I'm not offended at all, I'm glad you got it fixed and i just wanted to express that it usually isn't a 'scam' per se, but some locksmiths and most dealerships are indeed a ripoff! Thank you for the video though, it was a big help when someone called me asking how to pull their ignition and i was able to call them right back and walk them through it for free.. :-D
Thank you so much for posting this and for the links! Someone broke into and tried to steal my car (2006 Honda CRV) and ultimately mutilated the ignition and also damaged the immobilizer. I'm so frustrated trying to remove the part. I purchased a titanium bit to drill through the clamp and it doesn't seem to be working. It almost seems like the clamp is fused to the steering column. Any tips on getting this clamp to separate? How did you manage this? As you said, this is the hardest part of the project. I can't seem to get the security bolts to budge at all, either. Also, How do I access the back bolts to drop the steering column? Thank you much!!!
corpuswala , thanks! I finally got it off...seriously, the hardest part of the project. I was able to knock one bolt loose with chisel and hammer and pryed it till it broke at the drill holes. Thank you again! So awesome to avoid forking out way too much money at the dealership. Bite me, dealer!
Felix Lugo : once you drop the steering column you will have a lot of room above the band, then I used a metal drill bit and drilled through the band little bit at a time, careful not to cut into the steering column, and then used a screw driver to take the band apart, hope it helps
corpuswala, thank you, using the drill bit worked but the key will still not turn with the new part. I also bought the part from amazon for the same price that you mentioned on the video. Any ideas why this may be? Thank you for your help.
Felix Lugo glad it worked out for you, the new ignition lock cylinder should have its own key, are you trying to use the old key in the new ignition lock cylinder??
IF you DID have the time to be careful, brought the ignition assembly to my shop, or another good locksmith; the old lock could have been serviced. I charge about 200.00 No programming, no BS, no bypassing or messing around. That way, you get DIY savings, without settling for anything goofy
THANKS A MILLION, YOU GOT ME GOING AND SAVED ME MONEY. ALL NEED NOW IS TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE LOCKSMITH, $60.00 PER KEY TO PROGRAM IT. I CHISELED THE SHEER BOLTS AND WAS A PIECE OF CAKE TO REMOVE IT.
I never went to the locksmith, instead I went to the local Honda dealer parts department. I was going to have a locksmith do it, but I faced to manys ah,what if from all of them.
Julie K Munden it’s about 400 bucks more than DIY, the dealer will give you a reprogrammed key and you can use the same key to open your doors too, in my case I couldn’t use the new key to open doors so I had to come up with another solution to keep doors locked and open when needed, that’s a story for another day 😀
Why didn't you transfer your old transponder to the new assembly? ua-cam.com/video/RiV_O0R5m4s/v-deo.html or was something causing you not to be able to do this? My CRV has the key completely stuck and wont turn or come out of the ignition.

You could also out the old immobilizer on the new ignition switch and glue or tape or place the old key near it
Excellent video, thank you. How did you cut? What tool did you use?
one question as i cannot see how you did one thing . - how did you leave the old unit connected and still plug the new one into the harness ?
As a locksmith, i can assure you that the programmer we use is not a $300 Chinese knockoff..

Averil Doyle sorry, don't mean to offend, I think what dealerships do is a scam, but not locksmiths trying to come to people in trouble and help out

Melanie Robbins sorry just saw ur comment, hope u resolved ur issue, I practically learned everything on the job, good luck dear

What happens when you take the old key out of the hole while the car is running?
so u had to take the old immobilizer unit off the old ignition switch? Is that correct? How did the taping it back up in there go?
taping went well...till this day my old key is taped inside the steering column....
How did you cut that band bro ?
Great video
If you replace only the key lock and not the whole ignition lock assembly, do you still need to reprogram for the new keys?
yes because the new keys will have a different transponder chip inside.
IF THE IMMOBILIZER GETS REPLACED, IT IS GOING TO BE REPROGRAMMED AS WELL. THE OLD ON CAN BE USE.
How did you cut through the "band" that wraps around the steering wheel to take off the old cylinder? Thanks!
Felix Lugo : once you drop the steering column you will have a lot of room above the band, then I used a metal drill bit and drilled through the band little bit at a time, careful not to cut into the steering column, and then used a screw driver to take the band apart, hope it helps

corpuswala, no i have been trying to use the new keys.
Felix Lugo the new keys should work in the new ignition lock cylinder, maybe you have a defective product??

I never went to the locksmith, instead I went to the local Honda dealer parts department. I was going to have a locksmith do it, but I faced to manys ah,what if from all of them.
Cool
I am buying a full steering wheel column for $75 I'll try to make a video...
Dealer wants $700 to repair mine. Ugh. Is it worth it? I can't fix myself.

My CRV has the key completely stuck and wont turn or come out of the ignition.
huh...not sure now why I didnt think of that? Sounds like the right idea.
may I have unit model number?
repeated himself a thousand time but never really gave hack for fixing the old wafers
This video is false I tried doing it and it will not work don’t waste your time like I did
