I really do hope they release the Streamlined Princess Coronation class in their blue and red liveries.
Yes, definitely on my wish list
Chris. I think the content today is clearly why your channel continues to be successful in TT120. The stop start would of been so fustrating for me as this harks back to many -ve points with new locos. However, you shine the light and overcome as always. Glad I watch these, but now want this loco too!😅
Keep it up m8y and so happy its got sponsors to continue such content.
Cheers Taff. 🍻
Interesting to see a resolution to carriage poor running. It’s easily the Achilles heel of the scale !
I’ve had to carve out bits of under frame ( none of which is noticeable from the exterior ) but I’ve also put clock repairers brass washers between bogie and body.
Everything tickety boo now but it does make you wonder about testing and quality control.
It’s not good if you buy your first train set and it doesn’t go round corners!
I have noted there is far too much vertical play in some wheel sets so I like the idea of the shimmy.
I must say the plum and custard Staniers are gorgeous.. would be wonderful with a blue Duchess..😊
I picked up 2 Duchesses on the way home, and have not opened them yet. One is a present for my brother. I just had to watch your video first. It looks beautiful and the same with the coaches.
They are. And don’t be put off too much by the scraping issue with the coaches. I only had two “awkward” ones out of ten & Hornby are happy to replace them
A beauty. I’m one of those people who thought that Hornby would be producing a loco and stock for us who fancy a shelf layout in this scale. A Class 121 Bubble Car DMU would have been ideal, with a variety of liveries in several eras available. But Hornby only seem to be catering for modellers who want a roundy round layout on a door. I’m still waiting for Peco to announce a pair of large radius points for some accurate track work. When either of these come out, I can finally start a layout.
Yes I’m holding off on big “proper” layout until Peco expands their excellent track range. Also DMU’s are definitely on my wish list.
Thanks Chris. Looking forward to seeing the new locomotive here in Aus 👍
Cheers 🍻
Absolutely enjoy all your reviews. You’re the best. 👍
Cheers Peter
Chris TT is gaining momentum i have always said it is the thinking mans gauge ,i wager more firms will soon join the fray
Oh definitely.. it’s just a matter of time
Very nice detail.
Lovely looking model. 👍
Sadly she won't do the 10 inch Tri-ang First radius on my layout. 😕
Happy Modelling
10”? That is tight!
@@PeachyTT120 yeah, my Tri-ang TT layout is on an 1800x600 MDF sheet. 👍
So i couldn't use my second radius curves sadly.
There's a 1 year build video I released a few weeks ago.
Very helpful video. Thanks!
My pleasure
Excellent, another piece of Garlic bread from Hornby.
Bought some bits from Malcs Models at a local show in Cotgrave. Bingham Model Railway Club.
It’s a taste sensation! 🤣
Great review! Now Hornby needs to be releasing the TT 120 line across the pond! I'm in the States and other than a few items on Amazon here it's impossible to find anything!
Cheers Trainbear. Are you still able to buy direct from Hornby’s website? (I know it’s not the same experience as buying from a proper hobby store)
@PeachyTT120 yes I'm assuming so. But the shipping from the UK is terrible lately. And the exchange rate doesn't help. But honestly it would be amazing to see the scale take off here. I've tried contacting Hornby USA. They never answer their phone, or return calls. Nor do they respond to emails! It's just a terrible thing. Hornby could tap into such a huge market. Lionel rules the roost here with O gauge, and their prices are astronomical!
Hi Chris,
Firstly congrats on the sponsorship, week deserved! Interesting issue about stop start as I had exactly the same with a new Trigo yesterday. After several attempts it finally got going and after the usual running in period, it now seems to be behaving. Can't make the 4th July event, but excited to discover the news when it is released. ATB.
I probably should have made it clearer in the video that my issue was the Bluetooth not the loco itself.
Don’t worry about the 4th, I’ll be doing a full video
I normally can't stand adverts in UA-cam but as some one who's new to TT120 and model railways in general I find targeted ads like yours very helpful giving me other places to look for stock and ideas. 👍 0:40 and paused video to go and look at Malcs Models and West Hill Wagons web sites. The Duchess looks fabulous. I need one now.
PS Liked the "giant" fly on the roundhouse roof at 14:18 😁
🤣🤣🤣the nano technology that goes into those flys is something else!! 🤣🤣
Thanks for the vid Chris
Cheers 🍻
Thanks for that. Looks amazing 🤩 forget your LNERs, era 4 & 5 BRs, it’s LMS era 3 only from now on 😂 I am tempted by those blood and custard though, really tempted.
They are gorgeous
Highly ingenious, Chris! You really go that extra mile!
I'm not a big steamer myself but I have always been fond of the LMS livery. Very classy. However, I shall resist!
Cheers!
Cheers Michael. Go on, you know you want one 🤣
Great video again Chris 👍. Like you say stop it Hornby. You’re releasing to much 😂. We can’t keep up.
Congratulations on the sponsorship
Cheers Ant 🍻
Excellent video as always.
I have been looking at the issue with the LMS 50' vans. The boggies are the same for all the LMS coaches but they don't scrape on the 57' stock, just the 50' stock, at least in the ones I purchased. I have swapped the boggies between the 50' and 57' and they only scrape on the 50'. That suggests that the problem lies in the chassis moulding. I also looked at all the boggies on my Mk1 coach stock and they all have verticle 'slop' and run perfectly.
My Dutchess was fine without a power bank.
Hello Rob, thanks for this. Yes I agree that the majority of these LMS coaches work just fine, and I agree the noise on the 50 is definitely a chassis design issue. However looking through the 10 57’s that I have, definitely two of the boggies definitely have the axle box issue that Carl mentioned in my interview with him & Martyn. (As per the troublesome tankers)
I’m glad your Bluetooth connection is working well, I wish I knew why mine is so flaky. 🤷🏻♂️
@@PeachyTT120 Havn't looked at that video yet. Bluetooth is 100%. I thoight your issue was intermittent power.
I'm tinking about how to resove the axle issue. Maybe put lights in them with the axle coil? Or just a DIY axle spring with stratights at both ends? Do you know of a supplier of them or is it a do-it-yourself job?
@@robnelson7818 hello, no I’ve not got a power problem, I run all my locos in on DC first and the Duchess was perfect.
Sorry, no idea where one might get those springs
Now I just want it in BR Maroon with yellow cab stripe...
Hello Peachy120,
Thank you for the presentation of the "Duchess of Atholl" and the LMS 57' carriages. Now I can't wait for the digital version of the Coronation Class🤩.
I also really like the design of the LMS 57', but I am bothered by the gap of over 5mm between the folding bellows when coupled.
That's why I also mounted the folding bellows doors when coupled to reduce this gap by at least 1mm.
It would be nice if Hornby or West Hill Wagon Works offered plug-in folding bellows extensions to visually close this gap.
I hope others see it the same way I do and aren't bothered by the fact that the bellows then have too many folds.
Tillig, for example, uses interchangeable bellows on its historical models.
That’s a good idea. I’ll mention it to WHWW next time I see them
Thank you for that. I am waiting for the TXS version and now with even greater anticipation. I have a set of the "blood-and-custard" Mk1's but I will now seriously think of adding the proper LMS coaches.
I will try to get up to Malcs Models for the 4th of July. If you are there I will say hello!
Cheers David. See you there
Wow first time winner need to up my skills to get it running I love a challenge
We need progress videos and entries in the blog! 😉
@@PeachyTT120 Don’t worry it will be, first step looking at your thoughts 💭 on chassis options. I think it will need its own section
That Fig 6 does look like what you uncovered. But I had no preconceived idea about it. How often have I known about product A and assumed a similar product B worked the same only to mess it up, same with Windows updates
hope po dont loose the posties 90. Great sponsor ideas. Ive used lots of their products. caroline
As long as it gets to my Delivery Office it will be fine 😊
Agreed wholeheartedly with the sentiment of supporting different outlets.
I'm currently running about 50% each between Hornby and Rails of Sheffield (my local physical store) but I fully intend to visit Malcs and give him some of my cash (even if it is a bit close to Nottingham for my liking😂😂 - it's an Ice Hockey thing).
I had seen the fixes for these carriages from Garry but I'm really disappointed that these aren't perfect 'out of the box'. Very poor quality control🙄
Malc’s is a great day out (without the missus though 😬)
@@PeachyTT120 I'm sorted I don't have one of those😂😂
The Princess looks royal Chris, might have to get one. Recently finished a couple of scratch builds in TT120. I have an exhibition layout in mind, down the line sometime. They are on my channel, Atb Doug.
I’ll go check them out. (After work)
Cracking content as ever Mr P. Shame the HM7k gave you issues, but the model itself clearly runs beautifully.
Absolutely
Great review. What a fantastic loco, the detail superb :) The coaches scraping, though a shame, doesn't really bother me as you don't hear with the loco sound turned on !
Absolutely, & to be fair, I only have one real offender
I cancelled my pre-order of the princess coronation for the Class 50 instead. The Duchess of Atholl looks fantastic. Maybe one to buy later on. 🙂
Absolutely
Hi Peachy, great video. I've got the lms era 3 coaches, but I haven't had a chance to test them yet. Did the Duchess pull all of those coaches straight out of the box? Did you have to modify some of the coaches first? Did you have any wheel scrapping issues?
1 scraper only. And only occasionally. Yes she pulled all 11 up a 2% slope, radius 3, no problem. Mind a mallard could do the same, but with occasional wheel slip.
That's a beautiful loco! Hopefully the bogie moulding issue can be addressed but at least we know it is fixable in these first released coaches now.
I know Garry’s got his fixes and chapeau to him for his efforts. I’ve resorted to the simple option of just returning the two that were a bit dodgy to Hornby for replacement
Hi chris. will try to make malcolms models. caroline
thanks again chris. caroline
My pleasure Caroline
Did putting the capacitors in the speaker baffle affect the sound much?
Yes it’s losses some depth of bass. But then I run mine with the sound turned right down. As soon as either Hornby or DCC concepts bring out a smaller bank I’ll be swapping it straight out
What you can pack into twenty minutes is amazing.
Cheers 🍻 Trevor
A stunning looking loco, though I'll probably stick to the DC version. Yet again the chuff rate seems way too slow for the wheel rotation :( The coaches are great too :)
Agreed
To get a more realistic chuff rate simply set CV29, Speed Table Select to On. The locomotive will run a bit slower for a given throttle setting but this also more "prototypical".
@@DavidJones-hd1jj thanks for the tip, I’ll try that out
I knew you’d be first and you didn’t disappoint. Interesting that you went straight to the power bank. Personally I would have tried DC first then reloaded the profile on the decoder to isolate the problem. Still I have a DCC Concepts power bank ready and waiting when I get mine. Thanks for all the info. Especially the speaker. Hornby and their instructions 🙄
Ran her in for 30min both ways on DC as per usual so I know the loco was fine. The three strikes was just for comedy effect. It was closer to three hours, 20 fails, 3 brand new decoders, all gone through the full & proper removal process twice. I did have over 2 hrs of boring video which I found was just too negative to use whilst I was editing it. Didn’t finish the video till 1am this morning and I’d just about had enough by that point. 😔
First time I plugged the power bank in, (before butchering the sound chamber) everything was fine.
@@PeachyTT120 😂 good background. I wonder what was going on? I hope everyone who wants to go HM7000 with these doesn’t have to fit a power bank!
@@damianinCanadaTT-OO I’m hoping Hornby takes mine and others comments about how awkward the HM7000 decoders protection circuit (it switches itself off when it’s noticed the tiniest fluctuation in current) is for simple running. This isn’t just an issue for TT120 but all scales using HM7000
@@PeachyTT120 I agree but I still see a lot of denial in some of the forums. I’m on your team
Damien, I actually had my video out on FB and UA-cam a
few hours earlier than Chris's, possibly the day before lol
Please be aware that modifying the speaker chamber will change the sound output. The larger chamber is there to improve lower-mid response and the baffles are, I presume, an attempt to further increase the lower wavelength. I am still waiting for my TXS model so I do not know how successful this will be compared to Blink Bonny's sound output. This (hopefully) improved sound output was one of the design changes that resulted in my pre-order.
Filling the chamber with a stay-alive reduces the effective air volume back to that of a small enclosure. Edit: I am not saying "don't do it", but simply be aware of the consequences, such as they are.
Bluetooth lives in the 2.4GHz radio band along with Wi-Fi, DECT phones and sometimes USB 3 electromagnetic interference. Phones/tablets have varying levels of sophistication in their hardware implementations. For most of the people most of the time a BLE mesh (leave all your HM7000 devices including the Dongle powered up!) works well. Sometimes though interference can mess things up. At least there is standard DCC to fall back on.
Absolutely, (the change of sound) I guess it’s all a mater of personal priorities. I like having the sound, but the first thing I do with these locos is turn it right down, otherwise for me it all just becomes a bit too much.
I agree that the HM700 default sound level is far too high for the small sugar-cube speakers. Like you, the first thing I do is turn it down. After a certain level all you are doing is increasing distortion anyway.
Great viewing .. fine video … my Duchess has arrived today … filming this evening could be a long night
You’re gonna love it Mike
Opening day on 4th July - manufactures attending: Bachmann, Peco, West Hill Wagons...
And some smaller dudes
@@PeachyTT120 You made is sound like a BIG announcement 🤣 and those were the ones mentioned on the title card for the 4th...
@@PeachyTT120 And at this point Anything is good!
@@lukestevens8735 I’m teasing. There are no smaller manufacturers attending. You will all be very pleasantly surprised
Look great
Cheers 🍻
Got mine earlier this week and cannot stop smiling. Are you getting one of the green duchesses? I really should not be spending extra money, but...
Oh, you know you want two….😝
I see Bachmann will be at the event on the 4 July…………………….. 🤫
And Peco 🫣
A year or so ago. A Bachmann rep at a model exhibition told me that they had no interest in this scale. Hmm!
Thanks for the vid on a new surprising to me TT 120 locomotive.
So have LMS livery coaches been released from Hornby to be used behind the LMS livery locomotive?
Only saw BR livery coaches in the vid.
Hello John, the first batch reviewed are LMS not BR. The blood & custards are the early, the later era5 BR maroon version isn’t out yet
Thanks Chris. I’ve been patiently waiting for the Duchess for a long time! If you were just to have a rake of just four LMS coaches, which would you get? Also, was it just me distracted by the monster fly on the engine shed? I was just waiting for Godzilla to appear 😂😂
1st, standard, standard, brake.
As for my co-worker…. 🪰 Ted ate him 🤮
@@PeachyTT120 Thanks! Keep up the good work - it is much appreciated! 😁
Hi Chris. Given that viewers may have to travel some distance to Malc's Models on Thursday, can you give us a heads up to when the big celebrity (besides yourself, of course) may be making an appearance? I'm still waiting for my Duchess to arrive, but it's rather worrying that you needed to install a stay alive when it failed on a single, straight piece of track! Do you think it would have made it around the 1st radius curve if you had given it some welly? Do you think all the Duchesses have a pre-installed speaker? Wow! That's a lot of coaches! Do you really think Hornby should stop producing stuff (LOL)?
That’s a lot of questions Paul! 🤣
I’ll be videoing and reporting on the Malcs event. The Duchess herself was just fine, my issue was more with the decoder (I perhaps should have made that clearer)
And yes, I’d imagine they’ll all have speakers fitted
@@PeachyTT120 Hi Chris Lots of questions: Sorry, that's a failing of mine!
Peachy, have you had any issues with your Princess Coronation's rear pony either coming loose or wheels not turning and/or wheels coming off the track. Sam's trains has just highlighted this in his review. You might wanna check it out and have a look at yours.
Nope, mine are absolutely fine. Although if you wanted me to place a bet on who might find such an issue…..😏
@@PeachyTT120 My first thought too. Have you had a look at his review to fully understand the 'issue'?
@@NewModelRailway1 no I don’t watch his channel anymore
@@PeachyTT120 🤣
Fantastic video. But am I the only one who can hear a sound that sounds like a burglar alarm in the some of the video of the loco and stock running??
No that’s the Flying Scotsman and Mallard in the shed on tick-over. My bad, I should’ve turned them off 😬
@@PeachyTT120 ahhh ok lol
That’s genuinely poor without being able to run it without a power bank looking forward to this model but now I might give it a miss
Plenty of others will have no problems, I just seem to struggle with Bluetooth connectivity with some of Hornby’s model I’ve no idea why, it doesn’t seem specific to an actual type of loco. I probably should have made it clearer in the review.
I've never needed to have a power bank in any of my locos, my Duchess works fine I'm happy to say :)
@@PeachyTT120 What brand of tablet / OS are you using to run the app on?
@@NewModelRailway1 latest iPad Pro
I should say, the problem is more I think, with the deciders rather than a specific loco.. but then some locos pick-up arrangements might also be part of the issue
Good! I'm expecting mine today :)
It’s a great looking model. Enjoy
Does it run better on DCC without the power bank?
@@Richard-ou6qo it would probably run absolutely fine, on both DC & traditional DCC. My issue wasn’t with the loco. It was with the HM7000 Bluetooth connection
@@PeachyTT120 I'm mildly confident that it's a power issue, not a Bluetooth one. If you switch off the tablet/phone, the train will continue to run without issues from the last command it got.
@@Richard-ou6qo I’ve been mucking around with this system for 18 months, I’ve got 27 HM7000 fitted locos. I’ve tried absolutely everything suggested. With varying degrees of success. The one constant is the moment I fit a power-bank, all Bluetooth connectivity and running issues melt away.
