No one makes me smile more than the Smothers Brothers. So much talent.
I could watch this a thousand times and never grow old of it !
One of the best shows and comedy duos. True comedians who could make you laugh without being vulgar pigs who curse every other word for a laugh!!!
Fantastic performance...Tommy Smothers had one of the best comedic poker-faces EVER! Playing the hapless moron was so natural to him, he was actually convincing. In reality, he was an extremely sharp individual who negotiated their contracts and worked for political causes, notably free speech. You go Tommy!
You can never get tired of these guys , true talent!
These brothers were and always will be the greatest!! Thank you for your MANY talents!!!❤️🇺🇸🙏🏻👩👩👧👧🍀🎶
They were great. It a shame that they don't make stuff like this now. This world is not getting better. Good music , good humor , clean and witty.
My Lordy how the pianist could make that piano talk. What a talent....and Tommy is very very talented guitarist. Great comedy. 🎶🎤🎶
What a brilliant act they were. Loved them for years.
I started playing guitar when I was 9. Learned a bunch of the Smother's songs - and my friends and I could recite their "bits". I was taken to see them in the early 60s at the Hollywood Bowl. I was blown away.
RIP Tommy Smothers - you and your brother (whom your mom always liked best) really made an impact on a budding folksinger.
Linda Ronstadt sings this song WONDERFULLY.
I've watched this clip several dozen times now. The reaction when the pianist joins in makes me smile very time.
Always one two of my favorites. Still laugh, and appreciate the music. I know I am older, but I sure miss this kind of entertainment.
Who would've thought the duel was with a piano, not a banjo? Brilliantly executed! 😁
With all the comedy and schtick, it's easy to overlook what a beautiful voice Dickie has.
A Wonderful classic duo that brought the American essence of our folk music to the ears and hearts of the world!
Boy, Tom Smothers sure had a beautiful voice. I guess I'd forgotten, or never appreciated it as a kid.
I remember seeing them when I was very young. But now that I am a classically trained musician -- vocal and piano -- I realize what significant talent they had as both musicians and comedy entertainers. 'Love this clip.
They are great; great harmonies, great musicians, great comedians. Loved their show, never missed it.
Very talented performers, a pleasure to watch this.
Such classy, intelligent, talented and entertaining performers. The world needs more like them.
God, I miss their comedy! It was so, sooo funny!!!
Proof that knowing how what's going to happen, when, doesn't effect enjoyment. Tom & Dick Smothers were consummate and precise performers who allowed audiences to appreciate the subtle blends of talents. I miss them.
Tommy waving Dickie off to turn and confront the rogue pianist is one of those absolutely perfect comedy moments of all time. Plus, got to spend an hour or so chatting with Dick Smothers a while back and a nicer, gentler, more decent, humble, self-effacing man cannot be imagined. It was an honor to meet one of my legends and have him be so much better than I had imagined.
wow I grew up watching and loving these guys they helped me through an abusive childhood and gave me a reason to laugh if even for a half hour heroes of mine
@@carolmaplesden916 GLAD you found them, GLAD you got 30 min of real humor, tastefully done, and an escape for awhile. Makes a difference.
We used to watch the Smothers Brothers weekly show back in the day. "Daniel Boone was a trailer and a tractor" had my father literally rolling on the floor holding his sides with laughter. They were--and are--such a talent.
This was another super duper act. Their comedic & musical talents continue to excite & amaze me. They were unique.
If they made a list of Top 10 musical comedy duos, these guys would be in the Top 3 no problem!! Pure, unadulterated genius all the way through.
The Smo's Bros are still both alive! Go bless 'em and keep them going!
I remember watching this first run. Thank you for sharing.
I enjoyed these guys so much both for their music and humor that i miss this kind of performance these days.
Forgot how funny these guys were. Love this - never saw it before.
Love this. Never heard of a piano/strings duo. Great!
They were so gifted blending musical talent and humor. With creativity in difficult times. Thankyou Tom and Dick for the memories!
I wish we had shows like this on TV now-a-days.
Ironic as they fought so hard against censorship and even lost there show because of it.
I loved every minute of watching their show! Was so upset that it was canceled. They would be great in these times!
That was both awesome and hysterical, all at the same time!
What a delightful performance!
Tom & Dick Smothers...
Their mother was so proud....
Of one of them.
Both of their voices are incredible together or apart~
Great Dueling Banjos and look at how all the adults are staying seated and enjoying them
Oh wow, I'd forgotten this one! Loved the Boston Pops and watched regularly. And the Smothers Brothers are brilliant.
Love the Smothers Brothers.
I loved their show and was SO sad when it was cancelled! To this day, I’d love to see it back on. Pat Paulson for President! LOL
The sad thing is, back then everybody knew Pat Paulson running for President was a comedic joke. These days, I'm sure he could actually win.
@@tainshabinnez9679 Haha! I mentioned Pat should run about a year ago, glad someone else remembers his 'candidacy'!
Musical comedy genius. Tommy sure could play a mean guitar, and Dick was a talented double bassist with a great voice..."That's why Mom always liked him best!".
For those who think that modern kids won't like things like this, my 5 year old's hysterical giggles say otherwise. I think the problem is that modern kids aren't given the credit to be shown stuff like this and are usually fed loud, mindless, violent junk instead because someone keeps telling us all that that is all kids are capable of enjoying.
I stood inline for tickets to a Joan Rivers concert with The Smother Brothers as the opening act. Brilliant!
Two of the greatest will forever be in our hearts
Tommy Smothers is brilliant. One of the best. The timing between the two is point on. Dick is one of the best straight men there is. I used to watch their show until it's unfortunate end.
How funny was that show? I recall breaking a glass of soda I was drinking while watching it (think it was when Raquel Welch did the "You know what they say" skit as a guest).
Which one? They got fired by every network! And I don't say that to detract, but rather to celebrate their commitment and refusal to compromise their artistic integrity!
I was a baby-boomer of the 60's [DOB: 1947]. They were [are] the stellar expressions of that time. THANK YOU ! You so helped keep me alive.
Brilliant - simply brilliant!
this humor is funny whether you were born in the 20’s, 80’s, or 2000’s. these two are amazing. and it’s even better that they are genuinely wonderful at making music.
Man these guys had CLASS..
Aka Victor Borge, it takes incredible talent to perform complicated, beautiful music, and turn it into comedy! A very special talent!
bensdadfrank
OMG, I’d forgotten all about Victor Borge...so so so very funny!
RIP Tommy. You really made me laugh 😂 over the years.
I loved their show as a kid they are awsome at music song and comedy
Outstanding, smiled through the whole thing
More comedic and musical perfection from the Brothers... And in this case the Boston Pops as well. Tommy is a comedic genius. I wonder if he'd a been a hit on his own, like Steve Martin, with his guitar? Or was it the brother act that made them so special?! I'll take it either way... I remember them doing Cabbage on an album in 67 or so when I was 9. Today at 62 and they're still going strong.. By the way they both haven't aged a day. Either great surgery or living clean lives of exemplary behavior! I'll choose the latter for my heroes.
They were just wonderful
I had the privilege of seeing these guys in person. Great performers.
OMG they were soooo funny. Such a pair! I never missed a show.
In the UK I never heard of the Smothers brothers , but I have discovered them now through You Tube and they are funny and talented people
Same here. I'm British too. I'd heard OF them, but I'd never HEARD them and didn't really know who they were. Like you, I've only discovered them because of UA-cam and I'm glad I have.
My dad had a bunch of their records back in the 70s and I grew up listening to them. So funny and so talented.
They dared to protest the Nixon admin.and the Vietnam war and were censored often.CBS wouldn't allow the great Pete Seeger on the show because he was a communist. With the wars in the Middle East, history simply repeats itself over and over again and again.
Tommy is mentioned in John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance", and features as guitarist in the bed protest music video for the song.
I was amazed when I moved from America to England how many famous people my British husband had never seen or heard of. Carol Burnett was another one.
These guys were so classy and funny.
What happened to such entertainment?
Take me back to this time, please.
I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time, I almost choked! I've loved these guys since the 60's. Thanks so much for the good time~!
The expressions were the best.
Good mix! Many of my favorites too! Nice to see Eva Cassidy.
To those who pine for the simple pure entertainment of the good ol' days recall this:
The show was cancelled as the Brothers were introducing political humor critical of Nixon, the Viet Nam War and racism.
Ostensibly, the brothers were fired for not delivering tapes of their shows in time for preview by affiliates (i.e, to be censored), but what really did them in was using their prime time show to say something that mattered.
Or try to.
The show that was pulled by CBS and never shown, the one with the second comic sermonette by David Steinberg, ended with Tom acknowledging something no other prime-time TV was prepared to do that weekend. He noted the first anniversary of the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr., and said, "Let's hope his dream will someday come true."
Richard Hiller : So true what you are saying but they were trying to get the truth across to us during extremely difficult times. That’s what CBS didn’t like.
@@roseblake5803- Not everyone wants to have truth introduced into their entertainment.
@Richard Hiller- Not everyone wants to have truth introduced into their entertainment.
@@dennisgawera8788 ...their millions of viewers thought otherwise. They'd had political satire on it for quite some time and their viewership kept growing.
Un matched comics with startling musical talent
I knew these guys were multi-talented, but never knew that they could sing so well. They are an American Institution. And sometimes Tom belonged in an institution. Love em.
One must have great breath to do those long “melismas”:!
They were extremely skilled and gifted musicians.
On the contrary, I appreciate his beautiful voice and enjoy the schtick.
They were very talented, more than I thought.
How wonderful to come upon this clip again!!! Out comes the notebook!!! Superb!! (I love Dick's wandering left eyebrow!!)
brilliant, at one point you don't know what's better, their musicianship or their routine writing.
That is good entertainment
2020 --- Still great !!
OMG when I think of the old folks that have gone on before my generation who's memories have faded and didn't have a place like you tube to go and resurrect some of our good times and humour I feel so grateful and it is nice that the generations can enjoy and maybe understand that we laughed, giggled and were silly and we still laugh maybe not out loud but I for one enjoy the the joy of our younger generations
HEEE to the HAW!! I love you tube so I can pass things on to my kids, stuff I was raised on!!
They didn't need UA-cam because they were so talented they'd generate songs at will. Something gained, something lost.
louiseA blood - We are fortunate that we have movies, UA-cam, and audio recordings of those we grew up with. It helps make the ‘Golden Years’ more like Gold. 😉 Including some that were recorded even before I was born !!! 🙃 🙂
@@boraxsopanic2670 shut up man, without a doubt there’s more talent today, sheerly by the amount of people out there making music. Look at jacob collier, one of the most gifted musicians in history (and I say this as a musician myself), breaking barrier before our eyes
Local boys from my hometown become the icons for political comedy facing censorship in modern American Television in the 1960's.
Love those guys!
Delightful, so clever and funny.
Always my favorite. I miss them!
Why is it I tear up on almost every one of these videos I watch?
Wonderful fun!😄😄💟
They're so fantastic!!
Pure genius.
Love their voices when they sing straight. Used to have two of their albums.El Camino Real and a comedy album. El Camino impossible to find.
the kids listen to the music of the day and think "they wish they were there for the 60's and 70's", well, wait till they get A load of this! Tommy and Dickie were so funny and their guests were "about hilarious" for the comedy hour. I think the "comedy hour" came shortly after the "cocktail hour"and what fun! check out when they had Jim Stafford on the show in Branson doing "classical gas". the clip is classical, and Jim Stafford is A gas!
FANTASTIC!!!!
Their show is one of the fondest memories of TV in my early days. Thanks guys. The show was a must watch in our house and everybody watched. Their political commentary which tragically brought them down was much appreciated. I’m was so sorry when the heavies at CBS cancelled them unjustly.
Hats off, standing o'vation all time greatest
Beautiful ❤😎
Mad Greek
If your into these great musicians and comedians you can find them on DVD.they had there summer special with lots of great bands like the Beatles.whole family enjoyed them and never will forget these clowns.
Jeese... why didn't somebody tell me about this? After all these years and I've never seen this one. I love this one.
This is a gf test and... I'm not sure I'm happy to admit it @ this stage but... has been for 25 years. 🙄😉
SMO-BRO still killin it
A time when things were so much more wholesome
Great fun!
Lovely and hilarious.
Absolute genius
Perfection
The pianist name was Mike Pretti from Texas. I took beginning piano from him at San Jacinto Jr. College. The thing I remember the most is how often he looked at his watch while I was playing.
😅
