No one is talking about all the animals
Not surprised...
A lot of deaths probably r seniors. Many seniors would rather take a chance to survive. If they die, no big deal, cause the other option is going to a nursing home, lying in their poop and piss, waiting for a nurse to come and clean you up, giving you more morphine to calm your mind from this shifty mess your in as your body dies. My mom lives down there, she refused to leave, did survive the hurricane. But died recently in a nursing home, lying in her own poop and pee. People don't realize how horrible a natural, slow death is. The ones with heart attacks r lucky. I know several who work in nursing homes. They tell me, some folks there, even vomit up poop out if their mouths, because their bowels quit working, body's almost dead. Crazy stuff. But ya, many seniors will stay, taking a chance on a quick death, than the other option. Then there's always extreme poverty, that traps folks. Let's be honest about all this. Peace....
Lots of wisdom in your comment.
Please, please clarify that shelters were offered to the residents. Not as comfortable, I'm sure, as hotel rooms. But at least the shelters are safe. I live on the east coast of Florida and know even very wealthy people who refuse to evacuate when they should. The stories I've seen on videos like these, from people who stayed during Ian, are harrowing!
Also, they don't talk about that a lot of homeless people take over abandoned boats. Most have addictions and they live in the boats free and then they go to the Chapel by the Sea and get free meals, hair cuts, clothes, showers, free medical care, etc. It attracts them to stay in the area because everything is provided for them. They chose to stay on their boats.
There are many many reason why people did not evacuate. It's not a time to judge. As I said in another comment, I would rather evacuate and just stay in my car or a tent over a shelter..seriously, they are not good...more like a dirty jail.
@@hoppas77 I didn't mean it as a judgment. I would prefer people did not have to die by drowning, or being smashed to death in their car.
Try checking out the poor neighborhoods like North Ft. MYERS
Yehp, it's sad alright.
It's also past time to have a sober conversation about living on barrier islands in times of sea level rise and climate change. Not trying to rub salt into the wounds. But every time there's a disaster, people say "now is not the time to talk about it." Then there's an expensive recovery, followed by the amnesia.
I'll make a proposal: abandon all those beautiful barrier islands and restore them as National Seashores. It's not as dumb as it sounds. The properties, if they aren't already, will be all but uninsurable except to the absurdly wealthy.
This is just so tragic. None of those people had to die! All the people who died had a chance to evacuate before the hurricane. You don’t have to go to a hotel to evacuate. There are shelters you can evacuate to. I know that shelters aren’t ideal, but it’s better than being dead. Your home isn’t worth your life, ladies and gentlemen! You can rebuild a home. You can purchase new belongings. You can’t replace a human being!
I totally agree you have to seperate your safety from your stuff. But those who evacuated are coming back to NOTHING and some had their hurricane policies cancelled by the insurance companies. This will reveal that many will not have insurance and FEMA will not be able to cover any of the real costs. TRAGIC in every way.
Those are words of wisdom. I just wished that more people had possessed that type of good sense.
And when I hear they didn’t have the means ? I would never have the means to live at the beach so that’s baloney!!! So senseless! 😞
I think for the most part people didn't even know if where it was going to hit until the last minutes. It's was supposed to hit Tampa Bay. Then all of a sudden it changed direction.
You only need 15-20 minutes to collect your valuable papers and such. No excuse not to evacuate to a shelter. If you don’t have a car, get an Uber or ask a friend or call 9-1-1. No excuse not to evacuate, none!
And yes, I live on the coast 2 hours North. I had a plan, I had everything ready, and I left.
I moved near Daytona Beach three years ago. A longtime resident who has gone through over six major hurricanes said she only evacuated once, and she'd never do it again. Traffic was crawling on I-75 for hours and many gas stations were empty. She could never find a hotel room. She slept in her car with her dog for a few days. Her house has never lost more than the roof shingles once. People play the odds.
Shelters may be a better option.
Or not waiting until the last minute to evacuate
@@virginialopezrey6860 Have you ever stayed in a shelter? I have and I would rather stay in my car or a tent..seriously, they are not good...more like a dirty jail.
@@hoppas77 I have not. Might not survive in a car, though. But thank you for the info.

What BS to rebuild in hurricane valley. Get a clue go inland, will Floridians ever learn?
Where do you live that doesn't have natural disasters?
Hi Michelle
Because we can.
Spoken like someone who doesn't know Florida and only pays attention when there's a hurricane. This is a very rare occurrence. How is this "hurricane valley"? Sure, we get hurricanes at various places in Florida, but to say that Fort Myers coastal area is continuously ravaged by hurricanes is simply not true. I've been through plenty of hurricanes, but things like this almost never happen. It hasn't happened in the 52 years I've been alive. That's hardly "hurricane valley".
One idea would be for the state to have funding for shuttles / buses to pick up residents at no cost.
Rip to all the victims
The public transportation was running for free on Monday and Tuesday until 7pm Tuesday night.

@lastdance2019 Just out of curiosity, where are you getting your information? I'd love to know what source is saying that "thousands" have died from Ian.
@lastdance2019 How do you know this? I don't doubt they are lying to us I just don't understand why unless they screwd up with evacuations or something?
Big fishing boats have generators so if the ones in the water run power to people you can cook bedrooms showers even on land you can live in them . I see 10 you could run water to one's on land or get radiator run generators of them boats . People don't realize it's an apartment on them boats use your heads
It was hell. LOUD! Things flying around everywhere.
Why do they say most don't have the means to evacuate? We all had enough notice, there are free shelters that take pets and they will even come and pick you up. They will feed you and keep you safe. No one had to die. Those people sadly chose to ignore the mandatory evacuation orders. It's sad but people need to listen to warnings.
I’m just going to leave this here for all those who remark: Why didn’t they ALL “just” evacuate?

@@LilyWillow22 That's moot information. About 700 or 800 people stayed on Sanibel. These people are rich, so they probably didn't go to shelters. They probably flew out of Florida or, at least, went to a different part of Florida. That's one example of how a place can evacuate. Those remaining people could have left. They have several days notice (they were never NOT in the cone) and 24 hours evacuation notice.
As for the others. You can figure it out. With 3 days of being told you're going to flood and then getting a mandatory evacuation order 24 hours before it hits, there's no excuse.

@@frey8725 Abortion Statistics
Current United States Data
Total number of abortions in the U.S. 1973-2020: 63.6 million +
186 abortions per 1,000 live births (according to the Centers for Disease Control)
Abortions per 100 pregnancies: 20.3 (Guttmacher Institute)
U.S. abortions in 2020: ~930,160 (GI)
Abortions per day: ~2,548 (GI)
Abortions per hour: ~106 (GI)
1 abortion every 34 seconds (GI)
14.4 abortions/1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2020 (GI)
These statistics include only surgical and medical abortions. Because many contraceptive measures are abortifacients (drugs that induce or cause abortions), it is important not to overlook the number of children killed by chemical abortions. Since 1965, an average of 11 million women have used abortifacient methods of birth control in the United States at any given time. Using formulas based on the way the birth control pill works, pharmacy experts project that about 14 million chemical abortions occur in the United States each year, providing a projected total well in excess of 610 million chemical abortions between 1965 and 2009.
When conducting research on abortion statistics, you may also encounter two different sets of numbers. One set is from the Centers for Disease Control, and the other is from the Guttmacher Institute-the “independent research arm” of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
The Guttmacher Institute totals are actually the more accurate since the Institute conducts private research on abortion providers throughout the country and because not all states are required to report to the CDC. In fact, California and New York-where high numbers of abortions occur-are not included in CDC figures.

Why don’t we as a community start a fund for something like this, such as a Hurricane coming in to help with funds to evacuate cause that’s the major issue when these storms come in, it 90 % why we Florians don’t leave when we are needing to evacuate…
The same with other states like Texas and Alabama, Mississippi, ETC ,I know our states help with the disaster but what about helping before the disaster happens..
Funds to evacuate? Are you saying, people don't evacuate because they don't have money? I was born and raised here i Lee co. Funds have never been an issue when public transportation will take you to a free shelter for no fee.
Very sad
That dude, right there. "Most people don't have the means to evacuate. We barely got a hotel room". Apparently, people think that if you can't get a hotel room or leave the state, you can't evacuate. Have these people ever heard of shelters? It's literally what they're for!
And the reporter.... Didn't have the means to evacuate? Public transportation was running until 7pm Tuesday night. Almost 12 hours after the mandatory evacuation alerts. Not to mention, we knew back on Sunday that the coast and barrier islands were going to get hit with storm surge. Not "might". We knew they would for days. These people, I don't care how old they were, had the means and the time to evacuate. They made a conscious decision to stay until it was too late to leave. Don't make it sound like they were victims of circumstance.
