Body percussion is a great way to work on your rhythm skills and get creative. By the end of today’s video we’ll be using the six sounds - clap, snap, chest pat, thigh pat, cheek tap, tongue click - to create a cool 4 bar rhythm.
First thing’s first. You want to get to know the quality of your sounds - also known as the TIMBRE. It just means that a ‘clap’ has a different quality of sound than a ‘snap’, or a ‘pat’. What that’s going to help you do is organize your sounds more strategically so that you can emphasize or ACCENT certain beats more than others.
Let’s take a look at our first 3 sounds:
CHEST pat - this is a very dull, bassy, hollow sound. It's kind of like the kick drum on the drum set.
CLAP - this is a cracking, popping sound. It's like the snare drum.
SNAP - this is a thin, sharp sound, like a hi-hat.
Since we’re not working with pitched instruments like piano, guitar or saxophone we’ll be using a percussion clef.

Great video! I wish we could still see the sheet music while you were demonstrating the chest/clap/snap pattern
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback 👍🏻 Check out a similar video of mine called “Body. Beats” - I perform with the notation on screen.
