I am half-Japanese and half-hillbilly. It makes it weird when I love this as much as traditional Japanese music....but truthfully when God rested on the 7th day, He probably spent it listening to bluegrass.
What we see and hear here is raw beauty, both in appearance and voice! Alison has a divine gift and we are so lucky her talents are here for us to enjoy! Thanks for posting this. :-)
Having followed her since about 1987, my guess is early or mid 90s. Saw her the first ttime at the Lonesome Pines Bluegrass Festival in Soso, MS in '87 or '88, and been a fan ever since. Her voice is still that pure, I just love when she stays with those same traditional bleugrass roots she started out in.
I used to not like Bluegrass at all when I was a young boy...however, I am going to take a page out of Thorin Oakenshield's book right now and say "...Never before, have I been so wrong." I've always loved the angelic voice of the beautiful Allison Krauss but I just started learning how to play Clawhammer Banjo and I just stumbled upon this: it brought me to tears. The passion in this performance is something only found in the hearts of true artists.
Man, these modern-day ALL STARS sure give this timeless Carter Family classic a fantastic contemporary going-over. Just great to see old Grisman in action on-stage here, once again. AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM .. when it comes to greats like David. Good as ever !! And don't this say somethin' about great, timeless songs like this one .. they REMAIN GREAT by virtue of their suitability to flexible arrangement & adaptation over different generations of the finest musicians god ever put breath into.
Some great talent, playing together here .. & boy, doesn't it show !! I just love the opening mandolin work from that grand old veteran, Dave Grisman. Alison's sweet voice is just classic old-time genuine-sounding .. reminds me of several of the old time female legends when I close my eyse & just listen to that voice. This particular song also lends itself to 3 & 4 part background harmony work, coming in behind the lead vocal on the choruses .. Carter Family style ...
Can't believe there's so many negative comments on this. I've heard countless examples of these folks tearing it up more than they did in this one. Sometimes great musicians have to acknowledge that less is more and they don't have to play every lick they know in a song. Especially when you put an all-star group together. When you put a group of virtuoso's together they can't try to one-up each other. I will admit that I wish one of them pushed it a little bit further.
saw alison and the gang with tony at merlefest thisspring.more awsome than ever go see them if you can,and be sure and take yer hanky. iffen you don't shed a tear at some point, you aint human. god love every one
Don't be surprised if Alison does a strictly-bluegrass CD one of these days! But by the same token, don't be surprised at anything she does from here on out - she is so imaginative and creative, and branching out discovering new things (ALWAYS in good taste!!!)so let's not, in our thinking, try to limit our sweet Alison or put her in a box, but allow her to expand our musical minds along with her own!!!!!
Greetings baby !!! I like this one it sounds so much like Dolly Parton !!! I love you and miss you !! All my love and prayers Brad Lee Houghton YOUR FAITHFUL LOVING HUSBAND !!!
Anyone know how old this is? Alison looks to be about 16. I remember seeing this on TV right after I was first introduced to Alison by sister who had just seen her perform live at the Steak n Ale on I-10 in Houston. She got her autograph on a napkin in the ladies restroom. A few years later (1991) we drove all the way from TX to OH to see her perform at a bluegrass festival. We said back then "What a songbird, she'll go to the top" Look at her know...........
@Hopkins1148 Yeah, fun to see these old videos of Alison before she became a beautiful superstar. And the most Grammy winning female artist of all time.
I think you have to be really close with your guess about the date of the recording. It's hard to tell looking at Grisman because he was probably born with a beard. Alison Krauss is one year older than me, so I would guess 1988 for this. This is a cool tune.
Back in the late 80's or early 90's i caught The Lonesome Pine Specials one night and Allison and Union Staion played an instrumental. i had tears in my eyes it was so beautiful. ok, i acutually sobbed I have yet to hear it again. Anyone help me figure out which song it was?
I am half-Japanese and half-hillbilly. It makes it weird when I love this as much as traditional Japanese music....but truthfully when God rested on the 7th day, He probably spent it listening to bluegrass.
"...when God rested on the 7th day, He probably spent it listening to bluegrass." That's a good one. And it might really BE true!
grumblekin well said
Amen brother
I have a friend who is Vietnamese and loves country music
so you're like the Japanese version of Kahn Souphanousinphone?
Too much talent on that stage. What a beautiful song. Alison clearly has the voice of an angel. After hearing that, how can anyone argue?
Bluegrass stole my heart.
Like so many before you, and many more will follow (thank goodness)!
Quite simply, the voice of an angel.
A serious amount of talent on one stage.
Such a gorgeous voice. I could listen to her singing all day long.
Hearing Schatz making that bass thump is a thing of beauty.
Alison's voice and fiddle brings tears to my eyes. She is a giant.
And she's a 27 time grammy award winner to boot
I dont see any comments about David Grisman, one of the best mandolin players out there!
Or Tony Rice
Because this was all about the singer.
Not much about J.D. Crowe on the banjo either
When you see tony rice on stage , will be something good happening !
What we see and hear here is raw beauty, both in appearance and voice! Alison has a divine gift and we are so lucky her talents are here for us to enjoy! Thanks for posting this. :-)
Out of the million youtube videos - this one - is one of the BEST !
Im a great fan of all things blue grass and I love the fiddle that Alison place and the style of her music asnd the lovely voice she has...

I love this so much. Alison truely shines here.
Perfect in every way.
Fantastic. She has such a nuanced voice, very distinctive, quite appealing.
I absolutely LOVE this tune!
Thanks for sharing.

I dig Grisman's solo style - embellishing on, but never abandoning the melody.
BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!

Sublime. What a classic line-up! Alison leading the creme de la creme at that young age.
I love the voice of Alison and bluegrass
such a magic voice!
I prefer songs about sorrow and hardship, that's what bluegrass is mostly about; gotta love it.
Wow, Allison Krause on fiddle and vocals, J.D. on Banjo, doing a great Carter Family song to perfection. Man, what more could a bluegrass fan ask for?
Alison sings that song as if it is her personal situation..... with such heart ❤️❤️💜💜❤️💜❤️💜!!!
what a great music & voice, thanx for video
You guys rock, this how bluegrass should be sung :)
love it. Love Alison.
the voice of an angel...

Bluegrass for sure, as it should be
Beautiful voice....
Allison has the purest voice Ive ever heard and her fellow musos are just outstanding.. love this song :-)

Allison is fantastic no doubt about it.
And she always has the awesome musicians around her.
What a beautiful voice....God!!!
Schatz is pulling some tone!!
a stage crowded with bluegrass-phenomenons! 2 thumbs up!
She is slimmer now. Has better teeth. Still has that angelic voice, too.
beautiful voice
what a wonderful voice
love this tune
great musicians
Best version ever! Alison has stolen an angel's voice for sure.
Best tremolo ever. Some of it may be due to Gris' taste in mandolins... looks like his '25 Fern pattern. What a monster.
I didn’t know that these talented people had met beyond my CD collection
fucking amazing
A true Classic redone oh so nicely.
David MuthaFuckin Dawg Grisman!!!!
I love this song very much and Alison does a very good job singing this. Best Wishes LittleCountryDJ

Mr. tony rice

Schatz lays down some super colorful bass lines.
Score = 1000 / 10 !
Beautiful early AK, so pure and true; are there any more; I have not been able to find them
Greetings baby !!! I like this one it sounds so much like Dolly Parton !!! I love you and miss you !! All my love and prayers Brad Lee Houghton YOUR FAITHFUL LOVING HUSBAND !!!
Alison was only 17 when we did this show for The Lonesome Pine Specials.
Wow! Talk about an all star lineup!
Thanks!

Nice
Allison can sing!
@Hopkins1148 Yeah, fun to see these old videos of Alison before she became a beautiful superstar. And the most Grammy winning female artist of all time.
beautiful
agreed. the voice is killer
...same thing happend to me man, I caught this gig at Telluride, amazing!
This is about 15 yrs ago. She grew up, slimmed down and made a fortune.
Very talented young Allison ! Correct me if i'm wrong but was there the angel verse missing between 1 and 3 ? All good love her to the moon and back !
There is a second verse, but for some reason, she always skips it.
I think you have to be really close with your guess about the date of the recording. It's hard to tell looking at Grisman because he was probably born with a beard. Alison Krauss is one year older than me, so I would guess 1988 for this.
This is a cool tune.
Allison Krauss has picked up some of Dolly's mannerisms in her voice. Beautiful rendition of a great old song!
Back in the late 80's or early 90's i caught The Lonesome Pine Specials one night and Allison and Union Staion played an instrumental. i had tears in my eyes it was so beautiful. ok, i acutually sobbed I have yet to hear it again. Anyone help me figure out which song it was?
beuatiful voice
Allison was only 17 when they did this?! Awesome!
I think Vintage18 is right, I always tought that Grayson & Whitter had the earliest recorded version of the song. Great stuff!
gee, i first recognised allison only by her voice. still - great as two great things.
Allison has a heavenly voice, doesn't she????
She has a heavenly voice but not so much a heavenly face
i love it
JRDILL, thanks for correcting me!
Has anyone seen Alison perform a song about the Lost Boys of the Alleganey. I is truely one of her finest tributes. If anyone could post it. Thanks
She might not be so pretty here but she sure as hell can sing!!!!!!!!!! Then and now!!!!!!!!
this is looooovely :)
