    I think one of the biggest issues is that a lot of these guys are used to being stars on their own teams and not putting in a lot of effort or defending properly. So when you have a team full of players who are mostly like this, this type of lazy effort on offense and defense is bound to happen. I think this wouldn't have happened if there were more superstars on the team since their skill, talent and basketball iq is on a different level. These FIBA tournaments really do expose the lack of fundamentals and basketball iq of most of these NBA players

    • @mikesmith2057
      @mikesmith2057 9 місяців тому +9

      This is so true. There's also the issue of reps. For a lot of the other teams, the same pool of 10-20 guys will have been playing together every summer in age tournaments. They know who drops, who steps, who helps, etc. becuase they've been doing it together for years. The USA guys play like they're all meeting each other for the first time because they are😂

    • @MrSilverfish12
      @MrSilverfish12 9 місяців тому +3

      I don´t understand how they can be like this. Even just 5 years ago your pride was always on the line every time you played defence. These guys look like they enjoy getting clowned on, it seems the James Harden virus has spread far and wide.

    • @clutteredchicagogarage2720
      @clutteredchicagogarage2720 8 місяців тому

      These guys are not really used to being stars on their own teams. They were stars in aau or college, but this USA team doesn’t represent the top talent in the NBA.
      They’re still talented, and they definitely would have had more of a chance to win this game had they put in more effort on defense.
      Still, if you look at these plays, Lithuania ran some really solid plays on offense and also shot very well. This Lithuanian team is a good basketball team. The American players didn’t play with urgency or much awareness on defense. If you instead had smarter players like Jimmy Butler, Iguodala, chris Paul, kyle lowrie, lebron, kawhi, etc (but in their prime), the defense would have been completely different.
      I don’t want to knock team USA’s coaching staff, but I am not sure that Kerr is the best coach for this group of players. Kerr is a very good coach, but most of his experience in the past 10 years has been coaching guys with exceptional offensive talent and very good basketball iq. Lue and Spoelstra are also great coaches, and they are guys who should be able to get the guys to play good defense. However, I wonder if a coach like Thibodeau would be a better fit when you have a group with less talent and need to win by playing hard and executing on defense. It’s always easy for onlookers to say the grass would be greener, and i think it would be unfair to put blame on Kerr or the other coaches, but I would go with a guy like coach K or Thibodeau if i could (not saying they’re available because they’re not) if i had a group of younger players who didn’t have the most talent and bb iq. Still, Lue, Spo and Kerr are 3 guys who care a lot and know a ton about basketball, and I am not at all saying that these guys are bad coaches because they’re all elite coaches.

    Can you make a video about Latvia? They lost only 1 game in World Cup qualifiers. Basically they stole Turkey's ticket first. Then they ran over France and Spain, and narrowly lost to Germany today. It can be attributed to inexperience as Germany also does very well at basketball too. This entire tournament, even watching the lower tier teams like Japan or Italy, has just been fantastic to watch. The Asian crowds have really brought a lot of energy and you can tell how hard the teams (other than the US) are trying to win for their countries. I really hope FIBA style basketball grows more popular in the US in a similar way that the large soccer leagues have, because in 9 out of 10 situations, the basketball is just more competitive and passionate.

    • @lpoffline
      @lpoffline 9 місяців тому +3

      Absolutely, these tournaments are so much more competitive, you can see more diversity of basketball styles and in general more entertaining than an average NBA game. It's a pitty how many great NBA players refuse to play in these tournaments. Football is a great example how world cup should look like, the biggest superstars feel pride in playing for their country and there is no doubt whether they participate if they are healthy and give all for their country. That's what great sport is all about, not rich guys sitting on a bench because "load management" or not playing defense because it might take away energy from offensive stat padding.

      It’s weird for Steve Kerr to be there, yet none of his players - especially the GSW Core of Curry, Thompson, and Green - are there to represent. This USA FIBA team is like a C or D tier team, and it shows in their effort.
      What is crazy, is that the US will be beatable even with their best players in the coming years. Europe has a bunch of great players now including Jokic, Giannis, and now Wembanyama. They’re not gonna be the easy rollover teams the US has faced in the past, and if they don’t get serious - USA Basketball is gonna get embarrassed harder then that pitiful performance at the 2004 Athens Games.

      I feel like they gave half effort on purpose too (no disrespect to LTU) and thought they’d catch back up in the 2nd half. Too many obvious mistakes. They also knew they were already qualified. Probably saving their legs

    I think people read too much into these 1 and done games with no real stakes. Team USA is 129-30 in FIBA. And after 1 loss it's "aww Euro fundamentals are overtaking the talent of the NBA blah blah blah" no it's just on this particular day against this particular team you got a win, enjoy it.

    • @eyeplay3146

  • @baeseokil

    It's not a travel @3:06. You can gather the ball while you recieve a pass. You can take two steps to come to a stop while progressing. You can even dribble after you come to a stop. It's in the nba and FIBA rule book for traveling. Fiba uses the term instead of gather. Glad FIBA and NBA are similar. College basketball should be following the NBA as well.

    • @baeseokil
      @baeseokil 9 місяців тому

      BTW great content Coach Nick. Sorry but I think this rule is confusing and should be talked about. I could see a case for one illegal step if you think he gathered the ball before he takes a step with his left foot. It would be two steps and an illegal step if he gathered before the left step or it would be no illegal steps if he gathered as he takes the left step and takes two steps after the gather. But these are not three illegal steps.

    It didn’t matter what LTU did. It matters what we didn’t do - our starters gave no effort on defense and it got LTU in a rhythm. Then they punished our guards in the post and we chose to leave them on an island. Effort on D and doubling in the paint would’ve won that game. The starters made the adjustment vs Italy and it was an easy win. Now on to Germany!

    Team USA just did not show up on defense against Lithuania, most of those 3pt attempts were wide open
    Given how they played against Italy it might have been a wake up call for them but we'll see how they fair against (probably) Germany and (probably) Canada. Starters tend to get off to a slow start but up until Lithuania the 2nd unit has been bailing them out. Italy was much all-around effort.
    Side note did not expect Lithuania to lose to a Jokic-less Serbia, by 21 points nonetheless.
