Just to let everyone know, I made this hat using #13 knitting needles, and one skein lion brand #5 Thick and Quick chunky yarn . I had to cast on 47 stitches to get the hat measurement right, although I think 43 or 45 would have worked too. Measure the circumference of your head ladies! Mine is about 22 inches , and when I checked my gauge , 46 stitches is what the gauge came out to give me 22 in. head circumference . I cast on an extra stitch to make it 47 stitches because THE NUMBER OF CAST ON STITCHES MUST BE ODD for the patter to work. After casting on stitches, the pattern is the exact same from start to finish. K1, P1. You will always begin and end each line with a K1 stitch. My finished hat is a little loose, but comfy. Covers the ears naturally so it's nice for north winters. Also, your finished hat piece before you take it off the needle should be about 7 to 7 1/2 inches long. I ended up making mine about 8 1/2 by mistake because I was guessing the correct length and had extra yarn , but if I were to make this hat over, I'd keep it at 7 inches. Use the extra yarn for your pom Pom. (My Pom Pom ended up smaller bc I made my hat so long).
Update to my previous comment below. If you use #5 bulky yarn like Lion Thick and Quick (chunky), you only need to caste on 41 stitches on a size #13 knitting needle to get the size right for an adult head 20-22 inch head circumference . I made it again, 41 stitches was key. Also, finished measured length before removing from the knitting needles is about 8 inches.

By far one of the easiest tutorials I have seen online. I followed along and I made my first hat. Thanks to your wonderful and easy tutorial. I have only been knitting for 3 weeks, as I am a 15 crocheter, so I was a bit nervous about learning the technique of knitting, but I've always enjoyed the finished look of knitting. You are a great online teacher. I am making this hat for all 4 of my girlfriends. Thank you so much....
I just made this hat and it was fun and easy. I didn't have her exact needles so I used #15 with one skein of bulky yarn (#6 bulky/ 5 oz.) from Wool-Ease. I would classify myself as an intermediate beginner knitter, completely self-taught from lots of youtube videos. The hat turned out a little bit more slouchy than hers, but I kind of intentionally made it that way. I casted on 41 stitches because I made another hat from another youtuber who said to cast on 49 stitches and it was WAY TOO BIG when I finished. I also made this hat a little longer than Tara's 8". Mine is about 9.5" long. I covers my head and ears with a little bit of looseness to it, for reference my head measures about 22.5" around. It's super cute. What I don't like about Tara's directions is how to secure the pom-pom. There are better and more secure ways that are just as easy and I also make my poms-poms by using my hand only - learned from videos here on youtube!
WOOLANDTHEGANG Can you still make the hat just using the knit stitch? I really want to make this but I need to know if you can do it with only the knit stitch 😀
Megan Unicorn yes you can do it with just the knit stitch. I have a cute little beanie I knitted just by doing knit stitches. Purls and knit stitches are more for looks.
I knitted the beanie as a beginner and it was a success! Well...it fits but I didn't accurately predict the head size and it turned out smaller than I had predicted so the back end of the beanie was sewed slightly closer to the top. I would recommend In your next knitting video to let us know how many rows a beanie would need according to head size :) anyway! thanks so much for this! giving it to my boyfriend for Christmas ! x
I commented and share the video before. I will say myself you take your time and explain sooooo clear step by step on knitting the hat, first time I ever come across a video that the person really what to share. I am trying to knit one, I have start over four (4) times and I am not giving up, must complete mine hat. You are the UA-cam I my say, I will not disappoint. Enjoying this video 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏼
Absolutely love your humor and the hat too! I finally got it. It clicked. Ive seen various videos but couldn't get it especially how to use the pom pom maker haven't bought one cause it looked so dificult so I would do it by hand. So im deffinatley interested in getting various sizes now that you made it look easier to use. Loved this tutorial I really wanted to learn also a better way to close the hat and this is it. Thank you. Wonderful job!!!!
Have never knitted anything but a scarf before but tutorial was clear and easy to follow. I will be making more as I am so pleased with the result. Thank you.
You are an amazing teacher!!! Took a bunch of videos and lots and lots of tries before I found your video on casting off......now I'm making that hat!!!! ; )
definately sounds like a yoga instructor. she has that sort of tone, ya know? i feel like this is a fantastic tutorial for anyone who has never knit before and wants to learn; very clear, easy to follow, repeats every step. its almost impossible to get lost. pretty neat. and that yarn looks SO SOFT I WANT IIIITTTT
I’m learning to knit a beanie for my significant other for Christmas, and your video truly helped me. Can’t say how stoked I am to learn another skill. 🥰 Thank you.
I totally loved this video! It is so awesome! Anybody can knit with this wonderful tutorial! It was totally nice to see a new way of casting. I think it is so much better than the other way...can't tell the other way if enough yarn was left (estimating really). Thank you so much for teaching us. Leaving a wonderful digital imprint of yourself. Best thing ever for the new year!! Blessings!!!
This was very helpful and fun. I may be able to make this hat. I'm a beginner at this knitting thing and enjoy it a lot. I want to learn various stitches and to read patterns. Thanks again.
Brilliant video and so clear! I have always wanted to know how to cast on properly as usually I just creat a series of loops with my finger and one needle. After years of making simple scarves, I have finally managed to make a rather attractive hat and it really took no time at all! Thank you!!! Xxx
Thank you Tara. I know knitting but hats were a nightmare! You made knitting hats super easy! I love love your video! Good wishes to you all the way from the Himalayas! 😊🙏🏼🇧🇹
You have a tiny miracle hidden in this video. Gathering up the top of a hat (like the kind of hat that's crocheted from the bottom to the top) for closure has always been so difficult for me. Thanks for the visual!
First project I've ever knitted! Thank you for this easy to follow tutorial. I definitely messed up a few times, lol, it doesn't look at clean as yours. (And it's a bit too small, think I need chunkier yarn or I need to add a few extra stitches). I'm pretty proud though, lol. Thanks!
I got the 37 stitches casted onto the first needle, then did the alternating knit and purl stitches and got all the stitches to the opposite needle. But you do not show the next step. Do I do the same thing in reverse to moves the stitches to the first needle again, or do I turn my work and put the needle with stitches back in my left hand?
Put the right needle (the full one) into your left hand, and the empty needle into your right hand (or just switch the needles). Make sure the working yarn (the yarn attached to the ball) is at the end (the pointy end) of your needles. Start the work again K1, P1 (knit one, purl one) to the end of the row and turn your work the same way as before.
I was laughing at the end counting the number of times she said pompom!!! Made this so quick, nice easy to follow instructions, winter hat done & dusted!
im a bigginer of kniting still but i think im doing progres with my worck and i adore your videos because you describe what your doing its so cool i rilly can liren from what your saying even without the video.
I hate to say it but this was exactly what I needed. Ty. I'm using different thickness of yarn so my number of cast on is trial n error but other thst. I'm set. Thank u guys
I'm fairly new at knitting (again). It's been years since I tried before, and even then, I didn't complete a lot of projects. I'd like to do more but, it's expensive. I've learned the long tail cast on but never know how much tail to leave. This looks like that might not be a problem. The other thing is that some of the cast ons are pretty tight, so we'll see how this goes... and yet another problem is that I've finally learned the continental style of knitting and wonder if I can do this without having to 'throw'. Guess I'll have to try. Thanks for posting and showing us how you do it.
I taught my self how to knit.i can do the basic knit and pearl but I can never get the beginning tight enough and by watching you vedio I learn how to get it tight by casting on one by one on the needle .thank you I will try it tomorrow.
Thank You for your wonderful tutorial step by step making this hat. you are great! I have learned to make several scarfs base on your posted videos, I love it.
I made this! I made it with regular yarn and it came out a little shorter than I'd like so I'd recommend a few additional rows but other than that it's super cute :) the video was easy to follow
Hi. I just wanted to know, do you have to do anything extra to make the sides/edges neat? I just started knitting and I've seen in some videos where there's a step to neaten up the edges, but some other videos don't. Oh, and do you have to turn your yarn/work over before you put the working needle in your left hand again (when you finish a row and before starting the next row?) Thanks.
Did she mention the Gauge for this pattern? I only have US15 needles on hand and Im not sure how many stitches to cast on or how many rows to use, since they're slightly smaller needles..
Want to say thank you, I have wanted to take up knitting as a hobby when my baby is born but all the beginner tutorials haven't been as well explained as yours. Can't wait to get started x
Hi thank you for such a helpful video, I am new to knitting so you did a great job explaining it, I do have one question if I were to put my project down how would I know when I picked it back up what the last stitch was I did ? How can you tell the difference? Thank you
It depends on your tension. Knit a tension swatch first and go by measurements. That way you'll know how many stitches to cast on to get the desired length. I hope this helps!
Note: If you are a beginner at knitting listen closely. When knit a hat or any type something like a sock or a mitten it is very very important to know gauge and to measure the head, foot size, or hand size for the person your trying to knit it for. a hat, mitten or sock without gauge even with straight needles your knitted garment could make it to either to big or too small. You should also knit gauge swatches if your using a pattern or making your own and if your making your own pattern please do math it you want it to fit your head, feet or head. And also note that knitting in the round require different type of swatches than other swatches.
Reighost b
you shold not brag ,but im not triying to be mean
THANK YOU!!!
That was helpful. Thank you.
Hi! I used this pattern to make a hat and I wanted to thank you for posting it!
Thank you for the update and corrections.
Thank you I did your version and I love it.
thank u so much ! hugs xx
Explained with patience and at a slow pace for folks who are beginners or returning. Appreciate your effort greatly !
Having a yoga teacher explain knitting is exactly what I needed. So patient so calming.. Love it.

Tara is the first guru of yoga that is teaching me how to knit a hat. I 67 and this my first. Thank You!!😘
I've been trying to needle knit ( i loom knit) but many people do not explain it well. YOU DO ! I did it ! Sssooo grateful, thank you 😊
Yay!! :)
+WOOLANDTHEGANG how many inches was it when reached the 28 rows
WOOLANDTHEGANG
Can you still make the hat just using the knit stitch? I really want to make this but I need to know if you can do it with only the knit stitch 😀
Megan Unicorn yes you can do it with just the knit stitch. I have a cute little beanie I knitted just by doing knit stitches. Purls and knit stitches are more for looks.
You can! Knit and purl are exactly the same size, it just has a different look if it is purled and knitted
this is by far the best, most comprehensive and easiest casting on tutorial I have ever seen. thank you soooOoooOOoooOoooOoo much!!!
I knitted the beanie as a beginner and it was a success! Well...it fits but I didn't accurately predict the head size and it turned out smaller than I had predicted so the back end of the beanie was sewed slightly closer to the top. I would recommend In your next knitting video to let us know how many rows a beanie would need according to head size :) anyway! thanks so much for this! giving it to my boyfriend for Christmas ! x
This was so helpful thank you!! It's so hard to find hat patterns that don't need curved needles 🌈💭
I found quite a lot of nice hats, & made with straight needles, at "KNITTING~TUTORIALS" channel. (def'..worth a look.!)
I love your knitting class style it reminds me of a yoga class. Very relaxed like a knitting yoga class!
Oh thank you!
Took a bunch of videos and lots and lots of tries before I found your video on casting off......now I'm making that hat!!!! ; )
She really does sound like a yoga instructor 😍 I love it
definately sounds like a yoga instructor. she has that sort of tone, ya know? i feel like this is a fantastic tutorial for anyone who has never knit before and wants to learn; very clear, easy to follow, repeats every step. its almost impossible to get lost. pretty neat. and that yarn looks SO SOFT I WANT IIIITTTT
I’m learning to knit a beanie for my significant other for Christmas, and your video truly helped me. Can’t say how stoked I am to learn another skill. 🥰 Thank you.
This is the best, beginner tutorial, for knitting a hat that I have come across. Thank you :)
You have a very soothing instructional voice. Yoga for knitters😊
Thank you! This also was the clearest video I’ve seen how to do a cast on other than the “long tail cast on.”
That’s the easiest starting method I’ve ever seen. Thank you!
I LOVE Tara! She was my gateway to yoga and fitness 😍❤
Also she's hilarious 🤣
I totally loved this video! It is so awesome! Anybody can knit with this wonderful tutorial! It was totally nice to see a new way of casting. I think it is so much better than the other way...can't tell the other way if enough yarn was left (estimating really). Thank you so much for teaching us. Leaving a wonderful digital imprint of yourself. Best thing ever for the new year!! Blessings!!!
I actually made a hat using this pattern and it turned out very well! Very pleased :)
This is the best and easiest hat knitting tutorial by far 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much for this, I just knitted myself this Pom Pom hat! I’ve only knitted scarves so far so I was so excited to be able to do this. Yay!!
This was very helpful and fun. I may be able to make this hat. I'm a beginner at this knitting thing and enjoy it a lot. I want to learn various stitches and to read patterns. Thanks again.
i love your sense of humourrrr!
Brilliant video and so clear! I have always wanted to know how to cast on properly as usually I just creat a series of loops with my finger and one needle. After years of making simple scarves, I have finally managed to make a rather attractive hat and it really took no time at all! Thank you!!! Xxx
this was the best and simplest knitted hat tutorial i’ve seen! thank goodness! except i cast a whole simpler way than the one shown 😅
You MOST DEFINITELY made me happy. 😂😂😂 I am going to make me a happy hat!!!!!!
Thank You 👌
Thank you Tara. I know knitting but hats were a nightmare! You made knitting hats super easy!
I love love your video!
Good wishes to you all the way from the Himalayas! 😊🙏🏼🇧🇹
Thanks for tutorial, never seen knit or purl stitch yarn wrapped before and after creating stitch
Thank you for cheering me up!
My hat turned out amazing, this tutorial had the clearest instructions and was very well done! Thank you!
Your so good at knitting 🧶 ❤️
I am a beginner knitter and this was an incredible tutorial! I have one question, though: How do you finish the weaving at the end of the hat?
Hi, We have a great video you can watch here: ua-cam.com/video/GnxpK6k_QWk/v-deo.html
You have a tiny miracle hidden in this video. Gathering up the top of a hat (like the kind of hat that's crocheted from the bottom to the top) for closure has always been so difficult for me. Thanks for the visual!
Glad the video helped you!
Thanks!
Loved the pom pom commentary 😄
Lauren T thank you, that was so helpful. I couldn't for the life of me figure out the 2nd row and restarted it like 12 times
Easiest I've seen till now. Thank you so much ❤️
So glad this helped you!
Thanks Tara! Very helpful . I have made 3 hats in one week
I started knitting with your first video & it has opened up so much for me
+Leah Vaughn Thank you for your kind words! It means an awful lot :)
This was a really easy video to follow, I never knew how easy it is to make a hat. Can't want to make one :) thank you for the video!
This is probably my favorite video I love the pattern and the yarn and your personality is amazing makes learning enjoyable!!
Ahh yay! This is great to hear, thanks so much for your message :)
WOOLANDTHEGANG how many stitches should I do with regular yarn instead of chunky yarn?
Rachaellove 1 lint hat
I was laughing at the end counting the number of times she said pompom!!! Made this so quick, nice easy to follow instructions, winter hat done & dusted!
im a bigginer of kniting still but i think im doing progres with my worck and i adore your videos because you describe what your doing its so cool i rilly can liren from what your saying even without the video.
Love you guys! Creativity... Joy... Love. ALL @ "Wool and the Gang"! 😆
i went to my dad and asked " hey dad? can i get some crazy sexy wool?" he looked at me wierd. lol
😂😂😂
I've seen a video that needs 3 balls of wool, and if you use their brand it would be like £45 😫
Chloe Leaver chloe i found my ball of c sexy wool on amazon it was 14 pounds hope that helps from england
Judith Birch thank you!! I'll have a look now! :)
Chloe Leaver λ
This video made me happy!! I’m so excited to start this project! Thank you.
That was a really easy knit. I’m going to go make one right now!
I've been knitting for 10 years and that is my least favorite way to cast on. I prefer the simple or, even better, the long tail.
jj mar me too I agree I just do it the simple way
So far, I like the long tail cast on too, but tell me, how do you figure out how much tail to leave?
@@smallfootprint2961 to figure out how much tail to leave, wrap the yarn around the needle the number of stitches to cast and add about 6-8 inches.
I just finished knitting this hat and pompom! It looks great!
I hate to say it but this was exactly what I needed. Ty. I'm using different thickness of yarn so my number of cast on is trial n error but other thst. I'm set. Thank u guys
Oh goodness, this tutorial was the best, thank you!
I loved this tutorial!
I'm a complete beginner and I found it so clear, essential and funny, I'm going to make my hat sing too 😄

I love this casting on method. Thank you so much!!!
Yay! That's amazing :)
I made this! I made it with regular yarn and it came out a little shorter than I'd like so I'd recommend a few additional rows but other than that it's super cute :) the video was easy to follow
Thank you so much for this simple technique with straight needless.
Thank you
I have been trying to learn the pearl stitch and your the one who taught me it
Thank you
Hi. I just wanted to know, do you have to do anything extra to make the sides/edges neat? I just started knitting and I've seen in some videos where there's a step to neaten up the edges, but some other videos don't. Oh, and do you have to turn your yarn/work over before you put the working needle in your left hand again (when you finish a row and before starting the next row?)
Thanks.
What a great , encouraging instructor. I'm gonna make this!
AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!
Who are these Jokers voting thumbs down?
I love this ❤️! Thanks Tara.
This was exactly what I was looking for!!!....thanx!😎
thx so mutch u explained it soo well and now I don't have trouble casting on anymore !
I did this using 10mm needles but followed this tutorial (in terms of c.o) and it turned out really well.
I used a super chunky yarn 🧶
Wonderful!
did you have to change the number of stitches?
@@foamsoap41 No, I did it exactly the same way.
Did she mention the Gauge for this pattern? I only have US15 needles on hand and Im not sure how many stitches to cast on or how many rows to use, since they're slightly smaller needles..
Is there a written out pattern somewhere in the details? I watched the video but would like to see the written out version thanks!
Thats pretty cool you put the needle through and just casted off
Thank you so much I love your video it is very easy and I can't wait to make a pom pom.
I’m definitely going to try this! Thank you!!
Want to say thank you, I have wanted to take up knitting as a hobby when my baby is born but all the beginner tutorials haven't been as well explained as yours. Can't wait to get started x
Bes turtorial ever. Its been impossible to find how to make a hat with 2 needles
Happy we could help!
That looks so easy! Thank you for such a clear tutorial!!
Could I use smaller size yarn and do the same thing?
Excellent tutorial, so easy to follow.
I’m so eager to try this out! Thank you for the video.
Hi thank you for such a helpful video, I am new to knitting so you did a great job explaining it, I do have one question if I were to put my project down how would I know when I picked it back up what the last stitch was I did ? How can you tell the difference? Thank you
Thank you and I'll try this for my granddaughter's and grandsons
I knit my first hat today, thank yooou 😊
thanks for sharing! so easy the way u explained it!
Why not just use the long tail cast on?
YOu either have. Avery small head or I have a big one ... I just finished my 28 rows and it looks a bit small and also tight circumference wise
Soo helpful thank you so much. I got a diy beanie kit and the directions made no sense, your video explained it perfectly
Yay! Happy we could help :)
will this pattern work with size 8mm needles???
I am using a different yarn, how long is 28 rows in centimetres????awesome tutorial by the way!!!!!
It depends on your tension. Knit a tension swatch first and go by measurements. That way you'll know how many stitches to cast on to get the desired length. I hope this helps!
WOOLANDTHEGANG I actually made a beanie that fits my head!!!! thank you so much for this tutorial 😊
awww so sweet I like the way to describe the knitting technics. ..brilliant I must try onexx
This was great I made a really cute beanie because of this video. Tysm 🙏🏽💝
Excellent tutorial. Thank you so much. Dying to get this wool... It looks so cosy...🌝
That is the most complicated way of casting on I have ever seen. Can't you just use your thumb and needle to cast on way way faster?
Exactly what I was thinking.
*****
Does the cast on stitch stretch well with the rest of the knitting? Some cast on styles don't have much stretch to them at all.
ok everyone casts on differently this is my first time seeing this method. do like it dont do it simple no reason to complain
It keeps really good tension from the get go.
many ways to cast on. this is called a knitted cast on, been doing it for years.
When I'm sick I watch this for fun
Jeremy Nelson wow
Great video. Is there a way to modify hat so that it doesn't have a Pom Pom but opening at top for messy bun?
"Don't loose it in your couch" I think my couch has eaten about 15 tapestry needles >.
Michelle Robinson note to self... Never sit on this one's couch.
