when I played it was tape on the first 2 fingers. But yeah as a pitcher it helps so much during night games, so the catcher knows what you're throwing at him.
Sign stealing has been going on for ages, but it usually just came down to the runner on 2nd tipping it with adjusting his hat as a sign to the batter or something like that after reading the catcher. The Astros just took it to another level with tech and I have to believe they weren't the only team doing it, it was the clumsy manner with the trash can that got them
Basically, if they hadn't used tech and caught the signs at second with another player etc. , it would've been golden, but outside objects were the no go indeed.
Sign stealing is not against the rules and has always been done. Using technology to do so has, since the early days when a guy tried using a wire + buzzer and installing a system in the field to consistently do so is.
Few things, at the beginning with the paint on the fingernails, because the catchers will hold their hands so far back when giving the pitcher signs (to try to avoid the other team seeing them) shadows can make it hard sometimes or the pitcher to pick up the sign. The nail paint in can make it easier for the pitcher to see. Both these UA-cam channels are great, Jomboy for the things you mentioned. BB trivia: if you've ever heard the phrase, nice guys finish last, that giants managers Leo Durocher came up with that one. the Astros and the Rockets both get their name from the space program based in Houston.
The rockets were originally in San Diego though, but considering there was a lot of aerospace manufacturing going on in San Diego at the time including a lot of early NASA rocket designs, it's still a fitting name
This is how the Astros were punished. MLB suspended the manager and the general manager for one year, fined the Astros $5,000,000 and cancelled their 1st and 2nd Draft Choices for 2020 and 2021. The Astros then fired the manager and General Manager.
The Astros were fined $5 million by MLB. AJ Hinch (manager) and Jeff Luhnow (GM) were both suspended for the entire 2020 season, but those punishments were handed down before the season got shortened to 60 games because of covid, so in hindsight it doesn't seem as harsh. Both of them were immediately fired, and now Hinch is the new manager of the Detroit Tigers.
I have to admit, whenever I see someone with an Astro’s hat on or Jersey, I automatically think they are pieces of S#_t, but I know it’s not their fault and I shouldn’t feel that way, but so many of them made excuses for what happened instead of speaking out against it. it just sucks.
Some catchers use bright nail paint so the pitcher can see the signs better, sometimes the catcher is in the shadows or the sun is in the pitchers' eyes.
As a former pitcher (not a very good one lol) that's the first thing that popped in my head. Switching up signs and if you're on to the trash can bit, last second you switch from breaking ball/ change up to fastball
@@jartstopsign exactly! I pitched all the way to college and after that amount of time you can just tell when a batter knows what’s coming. Stealing signals has always been apart of baseball. My uncle who was a diligent student of the game and read exstinsivly about the history of the game told me many stories about what teams would do to take advantage of the home field. And as long as baseball exist, this will continue.
Normally when fans of typically good teams complain about it being hard like some Patriots fans were doing this year I get pissed but I can understand this. I have no sympathy for the team, I hated them even before this, but I’m sorry for the fans as long as they don’t try to defend them
“José Altuve was the one guy that didn’t use the trash can,” Correa told Rosenthal. “The few times that the trash can was banged was without his consent, and he would go inside the clubhouse and inside the dugout to whoever was banging the trash can and he would get (upset). He would get mad. He would say, ’I don’t want this. I can’t hit like this. Don’t you do that to me.’ He played the game clean.” Fact is if Jose protested the cheating, not wanting to be a part of it, then that clearly means the Astros were cheating or what was he protesting? Astros=Slim bag cheaters The Astros were fined $5 million, the maximum allowed by the MLB constitution, and forced to forfeit their first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. In addition, GM Luhnow and Manager Hinch were each suspended for the entire 2020 season, including the playoffs.
The crazy thing about baseball is it has been that well documented for over 200 years. Every pitch, every ball, every strike every, stolen base. EVERYTHING.
There was a pitcher who figured out that the Astros were stealing his signs (I thought he played for the Dodgers, but it may have been the guy they showed), but he got shelled so bad, he was sent to the minors and never came back that season. The Astros should have suffered the same fate as the Chicago "Blacksox" who threw away games so that certain people betting against them would make money. The Astros contend that "even if we had the signs, you still have to hit the ball...", which is exactly what fans of Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, et al, say about the steroid scandal of the late 1990s; when you have an advantage and you're bad, it isn't as obvious, but when you have an advantage and you're already great...well, it's glaringly obvious. You go from All-Star (best that season) to Hall-of-Fame (best ever), overnight. In the case of the Astros, you have an incredible advantage knowing the signs in advance and knowing how a pitch should (or shouldn't) break and how fast/slow to expect it. The only other thing you need is the location.
The Astros didn’t even have the very thing taken away that they cheated to get. The players were not punished at all. MLB absolutely blew it, and I’d expect another cheating scandal in the future since they don’t seem to care about stopping it.
The sounds weren’t actually that obvious on the broadcast, for one you wouldn’t have known to listen for them and also people isolated the audio of the banging so it’s easier to hear
Any Astros batter who hit after a bang is at least a good suspect. Yes, they might have hit anyway (and/or ignored the bang) but the person MAKING the bang at least believed that batter was part of the scheme, or they wouldn't have made the sound.

There were rumors that after Altuve hit the homer against the yankees, he wouldn't let his teammates rip his shirt off because it would reveal a buzzer
Statistics for most major & college sports are usually fairly available online, though one might need to subscribe to a service to readily access (I honestly don't know). I do know that baseball is a statistician's wet dream....

Stats for American sports is kind of crazy, but baseball is the absolute king of stats. There are so many esoteric stats that are kept track of it's absolutely nuts. I would invite you to watch the movie 'Moneyball', staring Brad Pitt and Jona Hill. You can really get a good idea of what kind of crazy stats are kept and how they are used by modern teams to win. It's also a really good movie in its own right.
I'm a lifelong baseball fan, and even I can't keep track of all of them. The digital age is making baseball stats even more detailed, such as the RPM of a pitch or the exit speed of a home run. They also have some pretty laughable ways of embellishing players' or teams' skills with lots of qualifiers (i.e. "most home runs at home games on a Monday in the month of June")
Seems like everyone highly suspected they were cheating. Just not sure how. Most teams had special signs specifically for playing against the astros and would change the sequence often.

Sorry, sign stealing was not illegal. Most teams did it they just didn't get caught. There away games had better stats so it didn't really help them. Honestly just because the banging on the trash can was picked up on audio doesn't mean the players could hear it. In the end knowing what pitch was coming you still have to have the skill to hit it. Just my two cents!🤷♀️
Sign stealing is something I bet every team does, but what is completely unacceptable is using technology that only available to them. They are professional baseball players and saying they still need the skill to hit it is a bad argument.
Sign stealing itself is not illegal. If a base runner looks in and gives the batter a signal or the batter takes a quick glance and cracks the code it’s fine, but you can’t use any kind of technology, that is very illegal and ruined the season for every team other than them
Catchers wear nail polish so the pitchers can pick up their signals when it’s dark out.
