  • There is no evidence in scientific research that suggests that we need to set technique and training based on eye dominance.

    This was a very interesting video. Had to focus a little to understand the accent, but it was worth it.

    I have personally found the dominant eye does have an effect, less miss shots because I actually see the ball better. So I disagree with your assessment. However everyone is not exactly the same.

    Everyone is different and you only can find out by trying to see if it helps in your case. 😁

      without scientific research that suggests more standard directions, we will be exposed to the opinions of coaches and proceed by trying what can be useful, can make training effective, but not efficient

    Mouratoglou probably pinched the idea from Arthur Ashe who i saw talking about it in an interview (on yt) taped back in the 70’s… haven’t heard Mouratoglou give him credit though.

      interesting, I didn't know that, thanks. The fact that it was already being talked about in the 70's should make him understand that it can be questionable

    I play with fucking glasses and I've been playing for 32 years and never felt this BS eye dominance and I've had former top 50 and high quality coaches and never heard of this shit.

    I wonder if you have an opinion on foot/leg dominance as it pertains to tennis; I have two brothers who are both right handed but play soccer with the left foot; I am right footed but play with my left hand, and my backhand has always felt more natural than my forehand, but I feel it’s because my right foot is stronger?

      It's a very interesting question and one that doesn't have an answer at the moment. There could be genetic causes, because it's been shown that if a parent is left-handed, the child has a higher percentage of being left-handed. However, we can also say that if learning is mainly by imitation in a baby, one who sees a left-handed parent is more likely to use left-handed limbs, imitating them. Each action then has a specific learning and disconnected from the others, so maybe for some reason you started doing things with your left hand and you developed some basic skills that made you feel more comfortable playing with that hand initially and from there you built your skills. If I had to bet my two cents, if the very first motor actions are with one limb for some random reasons (exaggerating, even something to play to the left of your crib as a baby), you may give priority more and more to that hand and it may challenge your "genetic" basis

    Well maybe there isn't a complete study that suggest that you should "adapt" your technique based on eye dominance (like there is no evidence of a lot of stuff just because there's no interest in a lot of that stuff), but if you are a left handed with right eye dominance like me, you know that you must adapt some of your technique for better performance, for example it's easy to lose the sight of the ball in your backhand if you don't force your head to keep aligned to the front so your right eye can see better the ball. You don't need scientific evidence for that.

    • @tennisscientist
      @tennisscientist  Місяць тому +1

      Any technique adaptation that uses both eyes to see the ball is hard to think of as not being superior to using primarily the dominant eye.

      @@tennisscientist I don’t think that saying that you need to keep your dominant eye on the ball means not using both eyes. Sometimes you have to adjust your “neck” to keep your dominant eye centered on the ball, as I said earlier when you are left handed and your dominant is your right eye, your nose can get in the way of your dominant eye, this is just an extreme example but there is not doubt that your dominant eye is more important to hit the ball centered on the racquet. It’s the same as practical shooting (IPSC), you shoot with both eyes open but your dominant eye is the one that you use to aim throught your sight. In tennis the objective is the ball, you use both eyes but the dominant eye is the one that will allow you to hit with the center of your racquet.
