I absolutely LOVED this movie when I was younger. I've watched it again recently and while I do have some nostalgia for it, I do NOT enjoy it nearly as much as I did as a kid. Still I think it is fun movie that is overlooked way too much.
Isn’t that funny how we’ve changed. Me and my friends LOVED the movie Nate and Hayes with Tommy Lee Jones back in the 80s…but it sucks! Still am nostalgic for the times we watched it way back when, but I can’t stand it now.
@@simbriant I can see that. It was a somewhat satirical take on action/heist movies of the time. Lots of people miss the joke because of the mislabing. Funny part is, it looks like a masterpiece compared to most of his movies from the last decade
This movie is so self aware that it's almost a crime... I love every minute of it. I know Bruce has gotten slammed as of late for making shit movies where he phones in the performances... and rightfully so... but he has also done fantastic work in a lot of great movies over the course of his career. That said... the "Swingin' on a Star" heist scene from this film is one of my personal favorites from his career!
@@RedEyeReviews Most likely the case. I was fortunate to watch it on VHS and had no idea what it was about. I ended up enjoying it. I feel like it's a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and is just campy fun.
I unironically love this movie, 'what can I tell you, I'm the villain' Some of the jokes are pitch perfect for my sense of humour and still make me laugh out loud to this day, the weird use of swearing and violence, the weird nods to slap stick Looney Tunes cartoons, the overall weirdness of the entire film, intentional or not. Willis does have a knack for comedy timing imo and it's a shame he doesn't try more, y'know since atm he's doing any old shit for a pay cheque. Don't get me wrong, 'You Eddie Munster looking mf' this is not a perfect movie, what movie is? But one of the biggest problems it had was when it released they marketed it as an action movie to bring in that Die Hard crowd, which was a massive mistake. Had they marketed it correctly who knows, it would have probably still bombed due to it's weirdness and people wanting more Willis shooting people (which I think he still thinks is the case judging by his current batch of, I'll generously call, movies) but at least it would have drawn in the proper audience, y'know, those people who want to see what a comedy would look like if it was made by a hungover David Lynch. Never the less a great Willis movie to start your review train with ;)
I saw this movie in the cinema, and when it was released, I bought it on laser disc. I absolutely love this movie. The thing is, I never tried to take it seriously - I always assumed it was a spoof - a satire of action movies. Maybe some people need some chemical enhancement to reach the state in which I normally live, but I thought this was hilarious, and I laughed my way through the entire movie. Things like Tommy's ridiculous survival or Hawk never getting his 'effete European coffee' (before there was a Starbucks on every block) were meant to poke fun at other movies. After seeing reviews like yours, it really made me wonder if I'm reading too much into it, or if I was the only one who got the joke.
I watched Hudson Hawk as a kid and thought it was brilliant. I've always meant to watch it again. After seeing this review, I'm now definitely gonna watch it. Bring on the garbage 🍿
I was the same way, but watching it again a year ago was tough to get through. It hasn’t held up as well as I thought it would. But maybe you’ll still enjoy it.
#1: I actually defend this movie for at least trying to be something unique. It's this weird hybrid of a heist film, cartoony slapstick, blow 'em up actioner, and buddy comedy. It defies classification in the same way it's script defies logic. In truth, I'd rather see a movie fail for trying to be unique than fail as a soulless, generic, paint-by-the-numbers straight-to-video cash grab...but I'm sure you'll be looking into Bruce Willis' later catalog soon enough. #2 Richard E. Grant is goddamn treasure in this movie.
I saw this in the theater with a family friend, we were the only two people there, the usher came in and thought we snuck in until we showed the tickets. I loved the movie then, it was perfect for my 15 year old brain... I'll never watch it again to preserve its greatness.
I like to think of the last Boy Scout as the true sequel to die hard. Like he was blamed for the hostages that died and had to open a private detective office in la. I fucking love that movie. It’s so over the top and I like how Bruce is still just a normal guy who is incredibly bad ass at the same time.
I liked this movie, as a oneshot. It sticks to its gimmick, it cheesy, corny, goofy and cartoonish, but it is original, focused, and simply mindless fun. And I don't care if it was ment to be anything else. I just like a good laugh. I'd watch this 10 times before even considering something like The Farce Awakens.
I can almost appreciate how few shits it gives about trying to make sense. Stuff just happens, entirely because the writers thought it would be fun. And sometimes it was!
Exactly for its time its a pretty good comedy, If it bombed at the box office doesn't mean is bad, John Carpenter's The thing bombed and it's now considered a cult classic and a great horror movie, also if you are going to fact check every word spoken in a comedy movie! you already set your mind to not like the movie, I mean this movie is not great but is not the garbage red eye makes seems to be is just a good comedy film for the time it came out.
"cheesy, corny, goofy and cartoonish"...sure, but this script is the total opposite of "Focused". As was even mentioned in this review, the tone of this movie is all over the place. That was probably its main flaw. Merging Slapstick and visceral violence is a very hard tightrope to walk.
how dare you this is a classic ! i watched this in theaters as a kid ..i dont know how i got there but i was there dammit and i had a good time .. hudson taught my growing child mind a lot of things during this movie ,how to pull of a heist ,some great old tunes and how to cuss like a sailor !
Comment in advance of watching the reviwew: I unapolagetically love Hudson Hawk. It's goofy and stupid, it has many problems, but I just love it from start to finish. Now - let's see what I think AFTER the review :) Update: You're not wrong. It's a mess, it's badly written, and it can't decide what genre it wants to be - but I still love it. The weird transition when they jump off the museum after the first robbery is - as I recall - a result of post production/editing where something else was supposed to happen but they couldn't get it to work so just made a harsh jump cut. I suspect I just watched this at a time of my life when I was into weird stuff and it just imprinted on me. Arguably, the whole film is just about Hawk trying get a cappuchino - the whole Da Vinci stuff is just sub-plot ;)
Dont get me wrong. It has some good parts for sure. and it would have been much more successful had they not marketed it as an action movie, but instead for what it actually is.
I am the same as far as unapologetically loving Hudson Hawk, especially when it first came out. I still love it, but it’s a much more difficult watch these days than it was back in the day.
It doesnt have many problems at all, its exactly what it wanted to be. Over the top fun. It might not work for some(most) but its as well written as these type of films get
I remember watching this as Teen and I frickin loved it. I didn't tell anyone it was my dark secret. I watched recently and still love it. It's so bad that it's so good. I still crack up when Hawk throws the exact amount change for the toll.

Just found your channel about 1 week ago. I haven't gone through all your videos but knocking them out. Had a straight laughing fit with the wife last night with your stuff. Great stuff, thank you.

I loved this movie growing up. Did everyone forget Bruce Willis started in comedy. Is it a great movie no but it’s fast paced and goofy action makes for a movie you don’t have think about to hard when you watch it.
Hudson Hawk is an absolute comedic masterpiece from start to finish. This is why we had so many wooden straight- to- redbox Bruce Willis movies at the twilight of his career; because we don't deserve his best work.
@Newsbender yes i did, i only had 3 movies on vhs at the time, this was one of them, nowadays i really think it is a bad movie, btw the last boy scout is a favorite of mine
I liked this when I first saw it back in the early 90s, but thought it had a weird tone (Thanks to it being mis-sold). But now having seen it a bunch I appreciate it for its novelty and its looney tunes tone - I love it. (Maybe not Andie MacDowell?). But all the tiny little gags, the supporting characters, the weird cartoon sound effects. Love it! You say it lost 90 Million? Prett sure it cost a lot less than that. Ahh whatever. It bombed! If you want to pick on a film that uses songs for timing during then please do Baby Driver. (A film I do actively hate!) (Except maybe Jon Hamm) lols. Thanks again Red Eye. I have literally watched the lot of your back catalogue as of now and it's been a pleasure.. Congratulations sir. Looking forward to what's next! But if you did this and Road House.. please add Harely Davidson and the Marlboro Man to your liost. It may seem like torture... but the video result has to be worth it!
I still enjoy this movie. Like you said, I view it as a live action cartoon with adult language and violence along with childlike humor and storytelling.
I would love to see a team up now of Steven Seagal, Bruce Willis and other has-been action stars. We could call it Actually Expendable or Real Suicide Squad, cause all the fun would come out of seeing them actually get beat up.
Funny story... The Expendables movies were made by Millennium Films, who sued Seagal after his awful behaviour on the set of Mercenary for Justice. He counter-sued them and swore never to work with them again... which is why he never appeared in any of the Expendables movies, despite Sylvester Stallone being in talks with him to appear in The Expendables 3.
I've somehow been completely unaware of this movie's existence until watching your video. This gets past that "so bad it's good" range and back into "bad" territory.😂
As with others, I watched this in the theater and enjoyed it. Still do. But I agree, it's not a great movie. Some of the background of this movie is that, at the time, Bruce Willis was white hot. He had just starred in "Die Hard" and was starring in the hottest TV show of the time, "Moonlighting." Basically, he could do whatever he wanted and Hollywood would pay for it. So he spread his wings--tried writing, released a music album, etc. Lots of "Vanity Projects." One of the things I like about this movie is that it looks like everybody is having fun and just enjoying the randomness and making a bad movie.
Well, couple things 1) I just suscribed. I love 90's and 80's action movies, I've been watching some of your reviews and I got a good chuckle out of them. Good job, mate. 2) Andie McDowell's dolphin screech might be the worst sound ever emitted by a human being. Not even Yoko Ono would be able to do that.
Theres another similiar movie like Hudson Hawk called HOLLOW POINT from 1996 and it has an all star cast with Thomas ian Griffith, Tia Carerra, John Lithgow and Donald Sutherland...just for the cast alone i think its worth the watch. As alway my friend, this is another awesome review
I have to fight the urge to dislike this video. I absolutely love this movie. It's so absurd and unpredictable, I just...man, how can you not love this movie? This is a true cult classic. There's a bit in your review where you show the scene with Richard Grant manically thrusting his hips as his Goldfingeresque plot comes to fruition, and you're like "I can bear through this" and I'm like "That's one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie and 95% of why I like Grant as an actor." Also, Andie McDowell making dolphin noises is one of the funniest, most surreal things ever.
I remember seeing this opening night in the theater as a 15 year old. Even then I remember thinking how bad it was. The musical handcuffs were fun. Then the dog being launched out of the window was the best part!
I watched this movie when I was a teenager back in China in the middle 90s. For the context, Hollywood movies had just entered the Chinese market, we started importing big budget blockbusters to theatres, then there were these super weird American movies on TV, the ones probably made almost their entire box office from selling to China, and the TV stations that bought them couldn't care less about these, they cut the original dialogues, dub them within an hour by 2 voice actors(sometimes 4 maximum); and if there's soundtrack behind then they just find a random piece of music and fade, it was weird. And I endured a bunch of these movies and enjoyed some. But this movie was so bad even at that time I thought this was a weird movie and almost gave it up half way. The only reason I endured the movie was because if I didn't, I would need to go back to my room and do my homework. I was so disappointed with Bruce Willis I thought he was a terrible actor. He was later redeemed (in my mind) by "The Last Boy Scout" shown on the same channel the week after.
I was very little when I saw this in the theater with my much older cousin. Telling me that this movie was going to be great. Right after the movie he apologized to me and got me pizza. But my young ass felt like I was king of the world. And didn’t even realize how bad it was till I watched it again at an older age where my brain wasn’t mush. Then I understood why my cousin said sorry. Much love to you red eye. I know this is a bad movie. But you had me go back to a time where life was more simple and for that I thank you.
This movie needed some subtle sound effects for the cringy comedic moments in order to down play the awfulness and to also tell the viewer "Yea, this is intentionally stupid" After Die Hard the 90s were not good to Bruce until Sixth Sense.
Oh it never dawned on me but you are correct. I play the start up audio but the ending animation. It uses to be one long video and I have cut it up to be shorter.
@@RedEyeReviews Yeah I saw one of the older vids with the full version. I like this version better and the fact theres a tiny bit of jank is super meta even if it was unintentional
OHHHH, this is where I got the 'Wong number' joke from! This was the first VHS I got as a present, I would have been 12. Also, I can't hear the word 'bunny' without having to say 'ball-ball!' after it, so thanks Bruce for that for the last 30 years.
Something tells me that at the end, when Ol' Redeye said "I'm gonna wake my dog up and take her for a WALK" he looked right at her and she immediately woke up when she heard the magic word, thus his little laugh there
What in the holy fuck 😂😂😂I always thought this was a serious action movie from the poster,I had no idea, glad I saw this while I was stoned, great review
I remember watching this as a kid with my buddies, stoned out of our fuckin' minds lol. It was the first movie I thought of when Bruce Willis was picked. Loved the montage of his flicks btw 👍🏽. Also, I know you've got a ton movies recommend, so I'll just though out Gymkata and ffs, how have you not done Kickboxer?! KIIIIIIICKBOXER!!!!
I kind of remember watching this movie on T.V. in the early 90's. I was a teenager then. At the time I actually liked the movie, watching this review, I now wonder about my younger self.
I "saw" this movie in the theaters. I used quotes because my girlfriend (at the time) and I were so instantly bored we spent the entire run time paying attention to, uh, each other. Years later I saw a review of it and didn't recognize anything. Looking back, I picked exactly the right movie for the occasion.
glad to see Mitchell and Webb sneaks into otherrs suggested. The Last Dragon, this, Warlock, and Remo Williams made my childhood VHS collection, great review.
I had never seen this movie before because I heard it was terrible so often. It was so much fun to watch the cliff notes with your commentary. The LOTR moment killed me, so funny. The dog makes a great gif. Thanks for doing these they are so entertaining.
I can't believe you didn't mention more about KitKat. I mean, THAT character is just... frickin' weird. I saw this movie years ago as part of a bad moviefest and after the prior six hours which included Howard the Duck (not that bad actually), Ishtar (argh) and Cool as Ice (ARGH ARGH ARGH!!!!) and the fact that it was about 4 am by this point, i found it oddly entertaining. Then I saw part of it again later when I was less punchy and more well rested and it was much more terrible. KitKat scarred my brain though - he's the only character I remember with any clarity and only beacuse of that weird schtick he had. Did not realize it was Caruso until now though. What a career.
Speaking of Marky Mark... I grew up in New England and went to school with a cousin of Marky Mark, and during my senior year of high school in 1997 I asked my buddy what his cousin was working on currently, and he said he was making a movie called Boogie Nights. My 17 year old brain heard 'Boogie Knights' and asked 'what is that, some medival disco flick?'. And holy shit was I waaay off. WAY off.
A roommate left this DVD behind after they moved out and it became part of my collection. I watched it a couple times, once with commentary turned on. I think it was just Bruce Willis trying to make sense of how bad it was. The infamous jumpcut was definitely brought up.
This movie is a masterpiece. The plot is hilarious (it's a comedy after all), the Mayflowers are perfection and of course Andie MacDowell is just amazing. It is everything I want in a movie.
PS: Did you know Bruce Willis released a music album in 1987 and ole’ The Lost One owned it on cassette? Also, I voted for Bruce in space because Hudson Hawk was so bad, I didn’t want you to suffer like the others of us who’ve seen it.

Hudson Hawk is an absolute comedic masterpiece from start to finish. This is why we had so many wooden straight- to- redbox Bruce Willis movies at the twilight of his career; because we don't deserve his best work.
Is that Leslie Easterbrook that was Callahan in Police Academy?
Sure is!
Please tell me the “you’re” in “catching your mistakes” is a joke. If so, A tier.
also I’m proud of you for saying escaped correctly.
Lol I don't know..was it? It was...
I caught it this time! Post Production fixer upper lol
oh man i loved this movie when i was a young lad.
This is my #1 guilty pleasure movie.
A great movie to show at the hat convention
Just bought my tickets!
So glad UA-cam recommend your channel. First time I can ever say that. Knocking it out the park with your reviews!
Thank you! I'm glad it recommended it too
My dogg coming through with Hudson Hawk. I swear you review every movie I watched as a kid. I'm going to hit your patreon when I get home.
So glad I can give some nostalgia for you :) thanks for the support man!
Close to the films that Bruce do this days this is a masterpiece.
That's a shame it doesn't get the credit I feel it deserves. One of my favorite campy movies with so many one liners!
But everyone in the Expendables WAS a has been action star. Jason Statham included.
Allegedly the movie had songs in to try and launch Bruce's singing career.
That dog scene is pure gold lol
I've somehow been completely unaware of this movie's existence until watching your video. This gets past that "so bad it's good" range and back into "bad" territory.😂
Lol it sure does. The dial rolled over from 99 back to 00
Glad to see so many fans of this unapologetically fun movie.
Bruce Willis's UNCHARTED
I remember this film from when it was Willis' worst film. Time makes liars of us all.
Lots of "Vanity Projects."
One of the things I like about this movie is that it looks like everybody is having fun and just enjoying the randomness and making a bad movie.
Not to mention his ads for Seagram's Wine Coolers (yep, it sure was the '80s!) - which I think can be viewed here on UA-cam.
Well, couple things
1) I just suscribed. I love 90's and 80's action movies, I've been watching some of your reviews and I got a good chuckle out of them. Good job, mate.
2) Andie McDowell's dolphin screech might be the worst sound ever emitted by a human being. Not even Yoko Ono would be able to do that.
Haha. Thank you!
Oh my God the dolphin sound is rough
Hudson Hawk: Or ... How I Learned to Mug for the Camera.
Also: Andie McDowell ... because we couldn't find an actual block of wood.
Just finished all your Steven seagal vids In 2 weeks just started American ninja big fan in liverpool
So glad you are enjoying everything
Theres another similiar movie like Hudson Hawk called HOLLOW POINT from 1996 and it has an all star cast with Thomas ian Griffith, Tia Carerra, John Lithgow and Donald Sutherland...just for the cast alone i think its worth the watch. As alway my friend, this is another awesome review
That one's been on the list for awhile. I gotta watch it soon
Bruce Willis' first flop? What about Sunset and Blind Date? Also, Steven DeSouza, one of the screenwriters on Hudson Hawk, directed Street Fighter.
This was golden. Thanks for the amazing review yet again.
Of course! So glad you liked it
@@RedEyeReviews bro... Waiting for Dolph Lundgren "I come in Peace" :D even thinking of you reviewing it makes me laugh it is crazy :D
@@684W13 I'll get to it soon :)
I loves this film , can't get enough of them constantly breaking into song 😆
I have to fight the urge to dislike this video. I absolutely love this movie. It's so absurd and unpredictable, I just...man, how can you not love this movie? This is a true cult classic. There's a bit in your review where you show the scene with Richard Grant manically thrusting his hips as his Goldfingeresque plot comes to fruition, and you're like "I can bear through this" and I'm like "That's one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie and 95% of why I like Grant as an actor."
Also, Andie McDowell making dolphin noises is one of the funniest, most surreal things ever.
Your IT crowd usage is a great touch.
That is a wonderful memory! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video
This movie needed some subtle sound effects for the cringy comedic moments in order to down play the awfulness and to also tell the viewer "Yea, this is intentionally stupid" After Die Hard the 90s were not good to Bruce until Sixth Sense.
I finally realized that the reason the audio sounds weird on the intro is because it has the popcorn noise from the second animation.
So glad you liked it
👍 "SUBSCRIBED!" I like Bruce Willis films ...great review bro, keep them coming
Thank you! So glad you liked it
I remember watching this as a kid with my buddies, stoned out of our fuckin' minds lol.
As a child i watched this movie like 20 times and new every line by heart, now it has so much nostalgia value, that it is perfect for me ;)
Yeah! Hudson Hawk! Thank you very much! This one hits the spot (again ;)
Sandra Bernhardt and Richard Grant had me cracking up in this flick. "Buffy.....ball ball." 😆
Another movie you should cover is Alex Winter's Freaked from 1993
I'll add it to the list
@@RedEyeReviews i promise you'll actually like it
I had never seen this movie before because I heard it was terrible so often.
“ you want me to rape them” bit was actually out of left field kind of funny in that movie. I laughed lol
WAY off.
Hahaha Medieval Disco would make a great premise
A roommate left this DVD behind after they moved out and it became part of my collection. I watched it a couple times, once with commentary turned on. I think it was just Bruce Willis trying to make sense of how bad it was. The infamous jumpcut was definitely brought up.
This movie is a masterpiece. The plot is hilarious (it's a comedy after all), the Mayflowers are perfection and of course Andie MacDowell is just amazing. It is everything I want in a movie.
“The lines go from zero to nowhere…” - Roger Ebert. That had to hurt Willis’ ego!
PS: Did you know Bruce Willis released a music album in 1987 and ole’ The Lost One owned it on cassette?
Also, I voted for Bruce in space because Hudson Hawk was so bad, I didn’t want you to suffer like the others of us who’ve seen it.
Oh my god. I need to listen to this music!
Lol yeah this movie was hard to watch but we survived
@@RedEyeReviews You are a brave, brave man my friend! The music wasn’t bad…back when I was 13! 😆😆 Oh, how we change. But yeah, you did a great job with this thing Willis shat up!!!
Ive seen this movie a few times over the years and I always forget the entire thing shortly after. My mind refuses to acknowledge it exists.
here’s what’s sad… his acting in this is better than his acting now
I loved this movie as a kid. It was fast-paced with juvenile humor. The candy bars were awesome.
I loved this movie!
It's got everything: action comedy great cast.
