I wish fans would actually study the game. Go back to Wilt and Russell. So many people don't realize MJ was a stone cold shooter too. 38.5% from 3 in his fist 3 peat. Hell, he still has a higher 3 pt playoff percentage than Bird, Kobe, and Lebron. Best shot blocking 2 guard ever, 3rd best rebounding 2 guard ever, the man did it all. And he did it in a time period where there were more great centers than any other time period, and you actually had to play defense to win.

Lebron through 13 years in the playoffs averaged 33.2 percent on 3 pointers, this is the same as Jordan’s full career in the playoffs. Jordan took 446 3 pointers in his playoff career, 13 years in the playoffs lebron took over 670 more 3 pointers at the 13 year mark in the playoffs than jordan did and still maintained the same percentage. For those that don’t want to or cant do the math in their head this is equivalent to 1,116 3 pointers attempted in a 13 year playoff career. Clearly lebron is a better 3 point shooter. This argument is for those that would make the argument that jordan was a better 3 point shooter simply because lebron‘s 3 point percentage is lower in the playoffs. If you took the 2019-20 playoffs and 2021 playoff average he would’ve averaged 33.7 percent. His percentage dropped below Jordan’s however because in the 2023 playoffs he took 106 3 pointers but only made 28. Leaving his percentage .01 lower than Jordan’s while taking over 943 more 3 pointers in the playoffs for his full playoff career. For the majority of lebron’s career, he took more 3 pointers but also made more and did it at a better percentage than jordan did. Jordan is not a better 3 point shooter than lebron. He shot way less 3 pointers, and shot at a shortened 3 point line for 3 years. Try again.

@@andrewcook1246 no, otherwise Curry would be the GOAT and Steve Kerr might be in the conversation too. However going on a stretch of 626 games without ever losing more than 2 games in a row in the process winning 6 titles in 8 years does. That was also during the time when scoring in the league consistently went down even compared to the high scoring avg. of the 80s despite whatever rule change you might have in mind (which applied to everyone anyway).
Btw in his 1st threepeat Finals he avg. 42% from 3s, showing that when mattered the most, he still can shoot quite well from 3s even before the line was shortened.

Honestly, MJ should have stayed as a PG. He would have been the greatest PG ever; the best 2 way player ever offensive, monster and defensive nightmare and all that shit about him not being able to pass would have never been a thing. What would it be then? Oh.. the infamous 3 points, that he was a bad 3pt shooter, nah, he wasn't.
Anyway MJ is the GOAT. MJ WAS the NBA and he is the best player to ever grace the game. To me LB ain't a top 5 player, let's be real, he ain't better than Magic at PG and he can't hold a candle to Bird at the SF position. Then we still have Kareem, Russel, Duncan, Kobe and Shaq. So, if anything, LB is lucky to be in the top 10.

Regarding his 3 point shooting I think people also forget to count rhythm in. He took so few in the regular seasons that it's really hard to measure. And if you don't look at the tapes you don't even know how many of those were prayers or bail out attempts at the end of the shot clock/period etc. ! For me it's also way more impressive to break a 3 point record on the biggest stage after not shooting that great in the regular season. The opposite example is LeBron's double digit streak which only stands for the regular season. It's been single digits several times in the playoffs which almost makes this work against him.

It wasnt MJ's job for most of his career to shoot 3's, or pass the ball. It was his job to score by any means, and he did it better than anyone to ever exist. When he was asked to shoot 3's and pass, he did just that and again did it better than anyone ever. Thats the only reason the stats are the way they are, he wasnt a point guard 99% of the time he was a shooting guard who was asked to mainly shoot mid range shots.

But it also known that Jordan took a while to trust his own team mates shooting the ball.

  • @ShareefusMaximus

The problem with Michael Jordan is not that he lacked any ability it's that he chose to play a selfish style of basketball. That matters. Michael Jordan was criticized early in his career for being the league leading scorer. He was told that the league leading scorer would never win the championship. He wanted to prove that he could win the championship while being the league leading scorer. When he was switched to point guard he was better, and the team was better, but he got that coach FIRED because he was no longer leading the league in scoring. The next coach had to dust off a college offense from the 1950s just so that the other players would get to touch the ball. Sorry, but tie goes to the player who passes the ball, when that was the right basketball play, and didn't need a genius coach to win.

Scottie Pippen was not a good basketball player in 1987 when he was recruited from a small college in Arkansas. He didn't even play bb in college. Jordan played alone, no allstars, no hall of famers for 7 years. After practicing and playing with Jordan for 4 years Pippen began to look like a good bb player. He became an allstar in 1991. First time Jordan played with an allstar. For some reason Krause never recruited really good seasoned players as support for Jordan. He was told year after year to be patient. As he played against teams loaded with allstars future Hall of Famers. Bird, Magic and Isiah are prime examples. They were always surrounded by 5 or 6 of the best.

So jordan facing more 50 or 60 win teams or teams averaging a similar amount of wins shouldn’t be a surprise or a groundbreaking discovery. Teams aren’t breaking records every year. And excluding lockout seasons the 2021 bucks and the 95 rockets since the 80s every nba team that has won the nba championship has won 50 or more games. Plus this argument is only used so that Jordan’s competition doesn’t actually have to be broken down. Which makes this argument a logical fallacy.

Do you think that if MJ was on those Celtic teams that beat the Bulls in the playoffs instead of Bird they only win 3 titles while losing 2? I doubt it. More like 10 and 0. This is where I feel Bird is overrated. Playing with 4 other hall of famers in their prime and you only go 3 and 2? Another reason why MJ is the all time GOAT with no contest from anyone. How much pressure was taken off of Bird being on those Celtics teams? Imagine if MJ had that? Now put Bird on MJ's Bulls teams. They don't even win one chip IMO.

And just like westbrook and harden, nobody got to touch the ball on offense accept to shoot. There's a reason no coach ever wanted him at point. You can't win that way. I can't defend james because he plays the same (accept in miami) but when magic was at point he averaged 12 assists. But cooper also got 5, worthy and Scott 4. The ball was shared.

      @justamessenger4577 7 місяців тому

There was a lot of offense going around in those days too. Lol.
But I have to disagree with you.
In 1983-84, Magic averaged 13.1 apg and cooper 5.9apg. They were the only 2 players to average over 3 assists per game. The team overall averaged 29.9apg.
In 1988-89, MJ averaged 8.0apg. Vincent average 4.8, paxson 3.9, and pippen 3.5. 4 guys averaged 3.5apg that season. The team overall averaged 27.0apg.
So that shows you are not correct. The bulls shared the ball more than the lakers did even though MJ was playing point. It clearly shows that players other than MJ touched the ball.
Also cooper came off the bench that season. So there is a high chance that most of his assists came with magic off the floor.

@@justamessenger4577 well made argument. Nicely cherry picked season of magic.
      But.
Why was jordan never put back at point?
Sam Vincent HATED playing with jordan because of the lack of ball sharing. He had played with a historically great passing team, and thought jordan incapable of such play.
Phil Jackson tried to take the ball out of his hands as much as possible to prop up other players confidence. It would never have happened without pippin taking the point forward spot.

      @@seanmolloy2172
I didn’t cherry pick. I picked the season where cooper had career high assists. You cited seasons where magic had 12+ assists and copper had 5+. So I went by your criteria. The other seasons where cooper averaged 5+ were the same as that one.
The point still remains that the year MJ averaged 8.0apg, other players averaged 3+ apg as well, 3 of them and Hodges was at 2.8. Which is equivalent to what the lakers were doing. So it was not MJ getting all the assists. I showed you that other players touched the ball as well. Even when MJ was the PG, other players got 5+ assists in those games as well. Some got as many as 8 on the same day MJ had 10.
“Why was MJ not put back at point?”
Because Jackson took over the next season and didn’t want MJ to do so. As you said, they would not be able to win that way. But also the triangle wouldn’t work with MJ playing that way. I don’t disagree with you on that point. And even after that, MJ still averaged 5.5+apg for the next 4 seasons.
The funny part is MJ accepted the change
and won as a result. Lebron, however…
Anyway the main point I proved is that MJ was not the only bull in 1988-89 who got touches and spread the ball around just as much as the lakers did.
