    Good Job on the video Rose! Helps immensely with decisions concerning new equipment and cabling needs. Many of my ICOM-7300 connections are used for other devices. This confirms that no serious conflict is expected for CW keyer. External speaker can be sacraficed.

    Wanted to thank you Rose for this video. I'm 70 yo and have decided not to just sit around. :) I'm learning morse code and have purchased a really nice paddle key from Ukraine and the MFJ 464. Your video will greatly enhance my learning abilities. Being able to connect it up to the my IC 7300 is going to be fun. Thanks

    Hi Rose, thank you for posting and I have to agree with many others here that your easy explanation style is top notch and I'd encourage you to show it in operation. I don't own a IC7300 but the explanations migrates across other radios. It's an expensive piece of kit as a morse trainer though. Thanks again 73 de M0AZE Mike

      Thank you. I think FLDIGI software works a bit better for translating actual QSOs, so I don't use it much with my radio. I use it as a trainer and agree it is expensive for that, but it is small and light and easy to take with me.

    Very clear and concise. Good job! Thinking of adding the 464 as part of my IC-7000 station. A demo of it all working would be a nice follow-on video.

      Thanks Michael. There are some other videos on UA-cam that you have likely found by now that demonstrate what you are looking for. While it seems to do a pretty good job translating from the radio, I think that my fldigi software does better. I have found my unit to be most useful for CW practice so far. It is easy to take with me and plug my key in anywhere. Earbuds make it so the family doesn't get annoyed. 73.

      @@RoseBag72 Yes, Thanks. I've seen some of the other videos but by my estimation, you have a better (clear and direct, in a good way) presentation style. I am sure other videos from you would be welcome by many. I'm planning to use it for practice with and without the radio also. Thanks again!

    Thank you is an excellent video but now I have a question I have an Icom 706MKIIG model I need to Know how to do the right conections to make it worth with a computer program that I have installed in my computer (hiper terminal )because I use a computer with a keyboard to transmit. Well In brief words I use the same device but with a computer.

    • @RoseBag72
      @RoseBag72  4 роки тому

      The MF-464 connects to your computer via a 3.5 mm stereo plug to DB-9 cable (sold by MFJ as the MFJ-5161). The DB-9 looks like a VGA but has 9 pins instead of 15. You may need a converter cable such as a DB-9 to USB depending on the ports available on your computer. The 3.5 mm plug goes to the "Serial Port" on the back of the MFJ-464. Best, R.

    I saw your video very usefully. Could you give a tip to lock the signal between the two rig? I think it's not easy at all. Could anybody help me adjust the level, tone, af/rf control between the two rigs, MFJ 464 and Icom radio?

  • @davidbinkowski4825

    It's kind of bothersome that noone sells a mono RCA to stereo adapter with the ground and the tip connected to the mono side. I almost tried to look you up RoseBag - so I could e-mail you to find out about where you got that RCA connector. But then I read your description at the top - and "oh crap, that's what I was afraid of". One other idea I had to address this cable issue - to avoid having to do something in the connector area itself, I just went on Amazon and for about $20 I was able to buy a bare wire open end pigtail (RCA), and also a bare wire open end 1/8" stereo connector). So I can solder the RCA center wire to stereo tip, and the ground wire to ground, and just cut off the remaining wire on the stereo end (that goes to the ring contact of the stereo plug)... Then seal it up with heat shrink where the wires are joined in the middle... No connector work necessary and wire to wire soldering is easy. This is not as fragile a process or in any way difficult. One other thing I did similar to this (seemed janky at the time but was easier than alternatives). I tried to open an aux cable up to wire the key side for my MFJ-557 straight key oscillator terminals, and the wires were about the same thickness as human hair, so that was a bust. I then decided to just take aother intact aux cable and just solder one wire direct to the tip, and one wire to the ground (skipping the ring contact area of the stero plug) - being sure to tin both the connector and wire first so they soldered easily. Then I put heat shrink over the solider joint on the connector to seal it up and give it some extra strength. Had to take care of course soldering the ground portion to the wire so it didn't cross over to the ring contact of the stereo connector. Not pretty, but all those sins are covered up in heat shrink and after I soldered it, it survived the pull test, so it worked well enough for my purposes. All its doing is conducting electricity in a simple circuit. Open/closed. So it didn't have to be a work of art. Another idea I think works is take one of those dual RCA plugs that goes to a single stereo plug, and just cut the one off (or cover it in tape) that is wired to the ring part of the stereo plug. Use the one that's tip/ground (usually that one will be red). and that's just as easy as making a new cable.

    • @RoseBag72
      @RoseBag72  4 роки тому

      I did make it. If I remember correctly, I peeled the video RCA end off of an audio/video trio and then soldered the other end to a 1/4" stereo plug. I think the key is that it is a 1/4" TRS plug and not a TS plug because the receiving port on the radio expects the TRS, not that it is receiving actual stereo. Does that make sense?

      @@RoseBag72 I am going to try a 1/4 stereo plug which accepts an rca plug and use a male to male rca but i aint holding my breath .Mfj have been making this unit for years and you would think that they would have fitted a modern usb connection on the back for modern keyboards, at style keyboards which they recommend went out of date 20 years ago . It also would be nice if they sold the cables which are required to operated the thing. The only adjustment to the radio I made is to expect a straight key from the MFJ-464 (even though I use paddles). As I have noted in other comments, I think that FLDIGI software does a better job of translating, but the MFJ-464 will accurately translate a strong CW signal. 73 &c.

      Использование Google translate: Если я правильно помню, я снял видео RCA конец аудио / видео трио, а затем припаял другой конец к 1/4 "стереофоническому разъему. Я думаю, что ключ в том, что это 1/4" Разъем TRS, а не разъем TS, потому что порт приема на радио ожидает TRS, а не то, что он принимает фактическое стерео. Имеет ли это смысл?

      🤔 If I understand you correctly then you are not using a key or paddle to transmit at all, only your keyboard? I wonder if you might be better off using fldigi software instead of the MFJ-464? If you are using a paddle, you will have to make sure that your radio is configured to expect straight key output from the MFJ-464. Best of luck with this. I am sorry I can't be more helpful.
