    Good video Mike, covered everything from how to put it on to taking it off. You didn't leave any room for questions so I'll just say well done.

    Thanks Mike! Use it quite a bit and it works for me! Got mine at hobby lobby for about $20 and it's 285.
    Take care, Dave

    A very informative video Mike, full of some great tips. As you know I am a big fan of Hot Glue, and have total faith in it's integrity, providing, as you rightly say, the glue is as hot as you can get it, and the wood is dry. Also I make the glue blocks cross grain, as most of the time the projects I use glue blocks for are end grain, so the strength is enhanced even more, with the grain in opposing directions.
    Cheers
    Mike

    tanks Mike... I have made up glue blocks like the one you used... ill try the hot glue for bounding as soon as I can pick up the gun and glue sticks.

    Mike, I've used the hot glue gun on wood turnings several times with great results....! Yes indeed stronger than wood. Thanks for the tip on using the heat gun for the glue removal....!

      I bought a cheap heat gun at Harbor Freight a few years ago. I don't use it much but it sure does come in handy and works so much better than my wife's haird dryer for shop projects!

    Hi Mike,
    I have a cheap craft glue gun and have used it a few times to hold pieces in my lathe.It takes the bigger glue sticks and I'm not sure of the wattage.I bought it years ago for some craft projects and although it seems to work I'm going to upgrade to a better gun such as you have!
    Thanks for another informative video!

    Thanks for this one Mike. Been thinking about trying the hot melt for a glue block. Your videos always have great information, even the little things. I really like the 2x4 for cutting on the band saw. Thought I have for removing it, why not just run it through the band saw. I'll try it that way and let you know how that works out. Just thinking about an easy way to do it. Thanks for sharing, Fred

      @MikePeaceWoodturning  7 років тому +1

      Since the glue block and turning are round, to remove the glue block on the bandaw would require a new sled type jig as the turning might be small and I don't want my fingers close to the blade. Something has to secure it keep from turning. Suppose I could use a wood handclamp. But I think it would be safer to use a heat gun or alcohol.

    Thanks for the tip on using alcohol to remove the glue. I'll have to give that a try. I have always parted the piece off the glue block.Billy B.

    Denatured alcohol makes the glue hard and comes off clean. I use it all the time for Paintless Dent removal. The PDR industry has tons of different glues of all kinds of strengths.

    When I want to slather something with hot glue, I'll heat one end of a stick with a blow torch. It won't combust, and you can apply it like a crayon. I like the bowl-turning application - I don't have that pricey chuck!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  7 років тому +2

      Scroll chucks are certainly not essential but are a real convenience.

    I watched Mikes video. First off, the "glue" does not dry, it melts. Due to the high temperature it melts and then as it cools down it gets back to the hardness it was before it melted. That is why it can be reheated to remove old glue. The key to using hot glue is to not let it start cooling down before putting your wood blocks together or it will not have as much holding power. I noticed in the video Mike waited way too long to put his blocks together after applying the glue. The glue was already cooling down. It is all a temperature thing!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for sharing. Yep, cooling is probably a better term than drying on hot glue.

    Mike -- I believe hot melt glue has gotten a bad wrap. Too many woodworkers associate it with their wife's craft projects and shun it. The glue comes in various formulas and can be great for a temporary or a permanent bond. I worked in a furniture mill when I was in college, we used it on some of our joints because it was strong, flexible, and set up so quickly. It's used in other industries, such as automobiles, too. So, it's not a glue that should be reserved for making scrapbooks!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  7 років тому +1

      I think your right. I think too many folks like me who may have used a craft gun never realized the difference in a larger gun. I think finding and selecting the right glue can be a challenge. I am sure there are stronger glues than the one I am using from Walmart but it seems to hold well.

  • @royboggs3849
    @royboggs3849 3 роки тому +1

    Freeze the glue joint with freon from a cannister (computer duster spray?). Then easy to get glue joint apart. Also use it to speed up cooling!!

    HI MIKE i use hot glue all the time for glue blocks and i use wd40 on it and let it set for a little bit IT WILL SEPERATE easy and completey i know about using oil on wood and staining it so i use a sealer ahead of it before applying glue also i have heated up a putty knife and slid it between what i was going to seperate and that works i have never used the mirco wave yet but i heard it to works i know that you probably know this way ago before i even heard of it i was just thinking outloud anyway talk to you later and GODBLESS larry

    Is there a difference in glue strength between the smaller glue gun and bigger one ?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 років тому +1

      Yes, the small craft gun does not get as hot and the glue is not as strong.

  • @gilgrace1915
    @gilgrace1915 7 років тому +1

    I gather from this video that it's important to use softer wood for the waste block. It would be a shame to ruin your work at the last minute with torn grain. I've seen others use just a bead of hot glue around the edge of the waste block to hold the work. Much easier to remove with just the tip of a skew. What are your thoughts on this practice? I would try some "Jim Beam" to remove the glue...if it damages you project it won't hurt for long. ;-D

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  7 років тому +3

      I believe most any dry wood will make a good glue block. Pine may be adequate for some projects. I would not use an oily wood like some exotics that might prevent glue sticking. I would avoid plywood or mdf that might de-laminate. I would prefer more glue than just a bead as sometimes there is a need to cut into the glue block. I suppose on some projects it is fine. I would not want to cut through the glue and have the project go flying. I would prefer to save the Jim Beam for post shop activities.

    Today (Friday, August 12, 2016), Alan Stratton posted a video in which his project kept coming off the glue block when glued with hot melt glue. (It also came off when he used CA glue.) You can find his video here: ua-cam.com/video/-khi1bnkHq0/v-deo.html

    Apply the hot glue to what you want to attach your workpiece to FIRST, that way it gets a better bond to that and wont damage your workpiece when you break them apart.
