NOTHING compares to the ZEN-like high from playing these types of games. Infernal Hails to MJR for giving a shout-out to this amazing genre. And all hail STUDIO MUDPRINTS. Their YT channel has got me into more shmups (especially lesser known ones) that anyone else. So great to see that the O.G. shoot-'em-up genre is making such a fantastic comeback.

This is a great list but a lot has happened in two years. Rolling Gunner, Devil Engine are on American Eshop and the king of shooters (for me) ESP Ra. De. Psi, by M2's Shot Triggers, is available on the Japanese eShop. These games are incredible, best ever made, works of art.
@@SotNist kind of agree. A lot of people hate the term "shmup" but it does a great job of differentiating these games without a long-winded explaination. "Scrolling Shooter" can sometimes work though.
Yep, true. Or specifically vertical/horizontal. It seems like anybody who knows the term metroidvania knows shmup now, even if the mainstream world might not, so it makes conversation easier.

It is unplayable for common player with it's scoring system and play it only for 1CC perspective or put continu on continu are not fun. Only a few number of players in the world master it. This game is a good choice for a common player to be disgusted by this kind of game ! If you recommand it for superplayer, okay it's a good choice but for common people ?! It is totally absurd !!! Happy to see the great Sine Mora here, at least as a HM. I'm currently playing it, just got promoted to Major after a lot of practice. Are Jamestown+ and the Soldner X games available on the Switch? Those ones are awesome games as well.
I'm just hoping we get some Touhou games ported over to the switch, sort of like a legacy collection. Probably won't happen, but I'd rather see those on the eshop or physical instead of the fan games getting releases.
Sky force reloaded is AWESOME...I can't put this game down. Thanks for the rec MetalJesus. It's the best shooter I've played since Pulstar. Methodical and addictive. This game will grab a fan of the genre.
Another good Shoot-em-up that wasn't mentioned here is Graceful Explosion Machine, that was my first shmup on the Switch. Plays a lot like the old Defender games with a solid combat and scoring system.
Great to see Hyper Sentinel in the list. We love that game and that it’s just like a modern day Uridium. We have a interview with Andrew Hewson from Heswon Consultants who published Uridium back in the day in episode 6 of our Retro Gamer Show series. It’s an interesting interview that you might like to checkout over on our channel. Thanks for another great video. 👍🏻
See Flash channel is awesome. All his sega Saturn and Dreamcast videos are all MUST WATCH...hope being on here gives you a huge bust cause you have provided me hours of entertainment and insight...Thanks for including him MJR
Really good list, however Thunder Force IV has just been released on the Japanese e-shop and it should definitely be in the top 5! EDIT: It is on the e-shop but doesn't release until 20th September.
Zero Gunner 2 is by far my most favorite Shmup. The fact that you can change directions just has a satisfying feeling for me. I can replay this over and over again. I'm not a fan of twin stick shooters because it keeps me from being able to use an arcade stick with them.
Sky Force Reloaded is fantastic fun! Great recommendation. Decent price. Well balanced grinding. Was a fan of aerofighters and strikers 1945 but they lack depth that this game has. Lots of replayability. Highly recommended!
These are almost all arcade conversions and rereleases of older games, I personally would have preferred to see games that were exclusive to the Switch or at least modern releases. These aren't really Switch games.
Thank you for this list. I'm new to the genre and to have some games for people like me is pretty nice. I started with Danmaku Unlimited 3 and Dragon Blaze. It's nice to have an easy mode to learn the games and don't be totally frustrated. Greetings from Germany.
Sine Mora EX is pretty sweet, it gets extra points if you like games like Einhander or In The Hunt as there are some similarities in some levels to those games.
Alpha Mission II is also pretty fun. I guess they're having a NeoGeo sale right now, so it's only $4! I got it last night and I'm very happy about it! 😁
I love Sine Mora it is one of my favorites Shoot 'em ups. I will also will recommend Pawarumi, it's not available on the Switch but I wanted to mention it because not many people know about this game, and it is fantastic, I love the gameplay and the Neo-Aztec setting :D.
I picked up Sky Force Reloaded because of this video. I have to disagree, Sky Force Reloaded shouldn't of been 9th, it should of been top 3! This game is insanely awesome and fun! Thank you MJR. You are my top 3 youtubers.
And now Thunder Force IV is available! It’s kind of hidden as it was released as its old US name Lightening Force: Quest for the Dark Star. But I was super pumped to see it.
Perfect list. Blazing star is definitely worth a purchase. A beautiful shooter with addictive gameplay. Last resort may be the best looking new geo shooter on the switch but it’s hard as nails. Still fun to play every once in a while.
I know he is in Canada and your in Seattle but it would of been cool to have you guys both talk about the games together at the same time... Kinda like when you do your pick up videos. :)
These games are so cool - I just wish I was better at them As a kid I played 1943 on NES for hours and hours. None of us were very good but we just loved playing it and trying to get further and further I'll have to check some of these out
Great list! I definitely expected Ikaruga on first place but I never expected Danmaku Unlimited 3, and I have both. I just would love to see Gradius V on Switch.
Can one or all of you Titans go knock on the front door of CAVE? Or how about an interview with Tanoshimasu Co., Ltd.? Android got #1 long ago, iPhone will get the love some day. Ikaruga iz a !!!BEAST!!! Have y'All seen the two handed Arcade gameplay?
Would really like to see some physical releases of this stuff. It's a 100% requirement for me. The poor ratio of physical:digital-only releases on the Switch is really, really making me regret buying the thing quite a lot. It's very nice that games like Ikaruga are there, but there needs to be a physical version. I'd want to buy some other late 90s - early 2000s shmups like Batsugun as well if I could. I guess I won't be deleting my Ebay saved searches anytime soon... I just can't reasonably expect any sort of digital download to still be available for me to play in 20, 30, 40 years. Meanwhile I play SNES games several times a week, no problem. Also I really dislike the aesthetic of humanoids flying and shooting magic to take down enemies in those Psikyo games. That's just really weird and everything about it looks off, especially the fact that your character is tall but not wide. I just don't understand why Japan keeps trying to sell me on the idea of humans that don't need planes, WW2 ships in the form of girls, or any of that weird stuff. When I play a shmup I want to see a plane or a robot or whatever that flies. And of course, of this list of games, it's these weird ones I don't like that are getting a physical release. The mind boggles. Please make a compilation of Toaplan games and release that on physical instead.
I bought the NeoGeo Aero Fighter 2. It has a display setting for vertical mode, but the game only has 4:3 ratio display. The vertical mode does not expand to full screen arcade mode. (I have a FLIP GRIP).
The dolphin is weird? Splinter choosing the weapons to give the turtles to teach them what they needed most is weirder. He gave Donatello the bow staff because it was simple to teach him simple is effective. Raphael has the defensive short range twin sai because of his anger. Michelangelo the nunchucks because they took concentration and concerted focus. Leo had the only bladed weapon to teach him to think beyond simple terms and weigh life. Forcing him to think about his enemies actions and be more insightful of the whole. Anthropomorphic dolphins? Yeah I’m good with that. Why not. In that setting? Yeah, still.
FYI, to those watching this video in 2020, there are two games released/releasing that contain the mentioned Psikyo games called: Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha and Psikyo Shooting Stars Bravo. Alpha is a pretty low release so pick it up while you can and Bravo releases this mid February 2020.
I didn't even know where to look for shmups on the switch. Let alone if there were even any on the damn thing. But most of this is older stuff....rereleased. Are there even physical copies? Dayum. Even on the best modern system (that's right) the coolest and most overlooked genre is underutilized. I'm not the biggest fan of the whole danmaku style. But I don't avoid it. Some games do it right.
Ikaruga mite b the best shmup ever made, sina mora ex shoulda been on list, but sky force reloaded is the full package, so much extended playability, shoulda bin no2 at least, however metal jesus rock he well...rocks so fury muff, golden miracle porkpie androids up in ere, king on toast!!!

Check out Sterdenn Stars! Awesome 8 bit inspired graphics, excellent humoristic touches and a soundtrack to die for. The game is hard as nails, but that sweet metal music just keeps me coming back.

I always click so fast when I see an upload from you.
Just to clarify... SMP or MJR? Either are great, of course =)
Sine Mora EX should have been in the top 10 for sure. The game story alone is worth it.
Aero Fighters 2 was in my arcade back in the day. Used to love that game.
See Flash channel is awesome. All his sega Saturn and Dreamcast videos are all MUST WATCH...hope being on here gives you a huge bust cause you have provided me hours of entertainment and insight...Thanks for including him MJR
Great video peeps.
I personally would have swapped some of the games from this top 10 with some of your own honorable mentions, but to each their own.
Top 10 GPDWin2 - Shoot 'em Ups! (Much better games in my opinion.)
1. Mushihimesama
2. Ikaruga
3. Assault Android Cactus
4. Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION
5. Jamestown
6. BLUE REVOLVER
7. Deathsmiles
8. DoDonPachi Resurrection
9. REVOLVER360 RE:ACTOR
10. Sky Force Anniversary / Sky Force Reloaded
Honorable Mentions:
Graze Counter
Super Hydorah
Starward Rogue
Velocity Ultra / Velocity 2X
ESCHATOS
Aqua Kitty ultra
Sine Mora EX
Rolling Gunner absolutely needs a spot up there.
I watched this video in vertical or "tate mode" lol
That’s an amazing collaborative video, i love both channels
Make a PS4 version of this video
Really good list, however Thunder Force IV has just been released on the Japanese e-shop and it should definitely be in the top 5! EDIT: It is on the e-shop but doesn't release until 20th September.
Zero Gunner 2 is by far my most favorite Shmup. The fact that you can change directions just has a satisfying feeling for me. I can replay this over and over again. I'm not a fan of twin stick shooters because it keeps me from being able to use an arcade stick with them.
Hyper Sentinel is making me feel sick to look at it haha
Sky Force Reloaded is fantastic fun! Great recommendation. Decent price. Well balanced grinding. Was a fan of aerofighters and strikers 1945 but they lack depth that this game has. Lots of replayability. Highly recommended!
ikaruga is just awesome I remember beating it on gcn. it rewards you for hours played giving you more lives and things to help u out
These are almost all arcade conversions and rereleases of older games, I personally would have preferred to see games that were exclusive to the Switch or at least modern releases.
Sky Force (both of them) - best couch coop game ever!
thank you so much. I did not know ikaruga had been released on switch.
I picked up Sky Force Reloaded because of this video. I have to disagree, Sky Force Reloaded shouldn't of been 9th, it should of been top 3! This game is insanely awesome and fun! Thank you MJR. You are my top 3 youtubers.
When you do these lists, could you maybe give the current eshop price? I know it'll fluctuated, but it'd be good to have a baseline.
Couldn’t do that on this video cuz of all the weekly sales Nintendo runs. It’s impossible to nail down
And now Thunder Force IV is available! It’s kind of hidden as it was released as its old US name Lightening Force: Quest for the Dark Star.
But I was super pumped to see it.
I just preordered RXN Raijin from eastasiasoft looks like a stressful bullet hell haha
Perfect list. Blazing star is definitely worth a purchase. A beautiful shooter with addictive gameplay. Last resort may be the best looking new geo shooter on the switch but it’s hard as nails. Still fun to play every once in a while.
Great video. I just wish you mentioned which ones, if any, had physical releases.
I played Aerofighters 2 in the 1990s. I spent countless hours at the Arcade playing this game.
How many of these are physical copies? Really starting to hate digital only or limited run with not enough copies to go around.
I respect your opinion, but Danmaku 3 is a masterpiece, that is my #1. Tengai really stood out to me, never heard of it before.
I've always liked Pulstar. I have it on the Neo Geo CD and downloaded it on the PS4. Is it on the Switch? I never checked.
This but for ps4 please
Wow, could this video be better timed? Been looking for good shooters on the Switch, I love PC engine shooters and the eshop search is a bit naff
I had no idea the new Uridium was on it either :o
More like Uridi-ish =)
Thanks for reminding me of Danmaku 3 i love this on my phone ! Had forgotten i had it
This video needed more Ser Flash!!! LOL
Always.
I know he is in Canada and your in Seattle but it would of been cool to have you guys both talk about the games together at the same time... Kinda like when you do your pick up videos. :)
He mentioned he'd like to attend the Portland Retro Gaming Expo...so the possibility is there!
Hyper sentinel!!! I love the Spectrum's Uridium. Thanks.
The Spectrum and C64 video filters are a nice touch
Thanks! Would be nice if you could include the information if it's available as digital only or physical.
honestly? my top 10 would all be the psikyo games...they are all awesome...some games on this list are crap to be honest....
Great video jason
These games are so cool - I just wish I was better at them
As a kid I played 1943 on NES for hours and hours. None of us were very good but we just loved playing it and trying to get further and further
I'll have to check some of these out
Great list! I definitely expected Ikaruga on first place but I never expected Danmaku Unlimited 3, and I have both. I just would love to see Gradius V on Switch.
Nice profile pic
I think it would help if it was stated if it has a physical release for those who prefer that. Thanks
Why don't you mention. My life in gaming, if you used a clip of their videos. on minute 11.
When Metal Jesus Speaks....I Listen! lol Love you brother sending love from Uncle JD
I love the shoot-em-up levels in *Rayman Legends*.
Is there something similar out there?
I don't really enjoy pixel graphics...
Thanks for suggestions
They are releasing a darius collection of nine games for the switch. Check it out on play asia
Here's the link to that pre-order for those that are looking for it. www.play-asia.com/darius-cozmic-collection-special-edition-limited-edition/13/70c5fz
sine mora wasn't bad by any means just tough and not to my liking. dragon blaze and the other psikyo games are tough but fun. I already have most of the others elsewhere except danmaku 3 which is amazing a must really! I even bought the soundtrack. You did forget one called RXN Raijin
Check out Sterdenn Stars! Awesome 8 bit inspired graphics, excellent humoristic touches and a soundtrack to die for. The game is hard as nails, but that sweet metal music just keeps me coming back.
