Modern Shed Build With Natural Light & Skillion Roof

- A timelapse and semi-instructional video of us building our modern shed with a Skillion/Clerestory type roof with windows. I modified other styles I had seen online and specifically wanted the beam over the windows to support the roof overhang. I hadn't seen one like this, so here you have it. I hope the video is helpful, or at the very least somewhat entertaining!

I used vinyl siding on this shed Michale, but SmartSide is a good option as well. I’m no expert, so there may be some other good options out there. I’m familiar with vinyl and it’s easy to tackle with one person, so I went that route.

I like the windows around the top very modern. I built something similar for my kids and used red cedar for the cladding. I liked the colour off your cladding it looks very fresh and modern. When I put my bottom runners down I put a damp proof course down to stop any dampness coming through the concrete base and rotting the frame Lovely job. ❤️ from Scotland 🏴 on lock down.
lewisdean22, thanks! The cedar you used would look great I bet! It’s so expensive here though, it’s about double the cost. I used ground contact (pressure treated) wood on the bottom of my walls as well to help with moisture rotting it as well. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!

I'm a landscape photographer and use the 4Runner for all my photo trips. Getting ready to build a new garden shed and just love the looks of what you built. I just don't need to go as big. Thank you!

Thanks for recording your work and details, I am building a she-shed and will use this video as reference, especially the Skillion roof. There are a bunch of videos out there but many miss the mark on showing how details are done so I appreciate it, good work!
Joe Mama, I was trying to make it as informative as possible while trying to keep it short enough that it wasn't an hour long video. I had hours and hours of video when I was done and was really worried about editing it decently. I really appreciate your comment, makes me feel like I did at least an "ok" job lol. @@PottersWork Why did you not notch you rafters into the top plate?
T Hyslop, I was being lazy...I made wedges that fit tight and wood glued them under the rafters instead of cutting the bird’s mouth notches to distribute the load across the top plate. Those along with the Simpson ties I thought were plenty strong.
Cool shed, I like the windows around the roof, they look great and lets in a ton of light. :-)
If you haven't moved your stuff into the shed yet I would suggest to get some self-levelling screed and pour that on the floor, that will give you a very nice and even floor and hide that old concrete floors. :-)

Awesome shed design. You could paint the concrete floor grey with the darker gray confetti or speckles. That would be a nice polished look.

Thanks for making this video. I'd seen this kind of design before, with the windows on the top of the front, but this is the first build video I've stumbled across. Fairly simple because it's a shed roof, but open-feeling with the extra light coming in the top. The 4x4s have a nice look to them, don't they. That adds a bit of extra style.
dper1112, no problem! I liked the looks of these kind of sheds/mini houses and wanted to tweak it a little by using the 4x6 beams. Most importantly I had never seen one with the cantilever beams sticking out to support the roof overhang. The only part that really was time consuming, were the side windows. That was the hardest part getting that framed in. Really glad I did though, love all the light that comes in. Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment and watching!
Agreed, the beams up top really set it apart from other stick framed modern sheds. I like the simple window assembly. Given the massive overhangs and PVC trim on window exterior, I don't think you'll have moisture issues.

We have used 2pac industrial paint on shed floors, concrete walls in toilet blocks and also on my sons small rental unit. It is marvellous. If it is really pitted or cracked it may need a light spread of a leveling compound first to do a real good job of it. You wont be disapointed. Good luck and i may just use your design for my next beer shed😁

@@PottersWork I have not posted it. Built on an old slab 10x20 still beeds sising finished and porch awning. I installed 36" entry on the side. It looks the same as yours except the windows..i put 3 2x3 across the front above the wall framing.

haha, yes it is Mike...they actually took it out of service a few years ago because there is another one not too far away. When it would go off, it would rattle our windows....it was deafening loud if we had to walk to the shelter while it was on! Although, we NEVER slept through a tornado warning when it was still in service lol.

That storm siren is no longer in service, but when it was...holy cow! It rattled our windows. And no hazardous materials, just some bikes, shovels and ladders. I store the flammables and chemicals in another building :)

Looks great! A suggestion for next time you do metal roofing, it's a good idea to screw down through the peaks rather than the valleys (sounds counterintuitive I know). That will help mitigate possible future leaking problems due to the metal expanding and contracting with temperature changes.
DigitalCrimson, thank you! I actually placed the screws according to the manufacturers specifications. They show specifically to not place them on top of the ridges. I think others may be different, but in this case this is where they specify.

Unless they are already on the outside under the sheathing and siding, it looks like you need more storm straps on the interior before you install drywall. Your straps at the top and the long bolts between the windows are great, but if you were here in Florida you would need Simpson Strong Tie straps connecting the top and bottom of every stud to the top and bottom plate 2x4s.
misterlyle, not required here in Kansas for a shed. This was built to code and was permitted. I’m sure you guys have much more strict requirements with your tropical storms and sustained winds. And actually the Simpson ties I used on the roof were not required since it’s not a habitable structure. Always a good idea to check local building codes or visit with your building official.

amazing work. coouple things, need to block wild creatures access through space between roof beams, insulation and maybe some vents (depends on ow insulation is done). looks beautiful.
Thank you mbchudno, the soffit I installed is vented, so it helps quite a bit. I don't really have any place exposed after finishing it that birds or other critters can enter. Small insects could get in the soffit though for sure. I was thinking about insulation, but it's really just a storage shed and nothing in there needs to be climate controlled. LOL, I bake as a hobby, long before the plague struck and drove the prices crazy. Last year I bought cinnamon, 1 pound for about $7, nowadays they want almost that per ounce, I can buy street smack for less.☺

Nice shed I really like the high windows for more natural light.if you could put windows that open from the bottom side it would let a lot of the hot air out in warmer times
Amicus, I considered that when I was planning the build...it was going to push me over my budget. If I was going to spend more time out there, I think it would be a necessity unless there was some other roof vents. Thanks for the comment!

Nice job on your shed. The windows around the top top really add a lot of style. Do you have any plans to insulate, especially the roof? On my last shed I added 2” of rigid foam to the roof (wanted exposed rafters) and along with the vented soffits. That made a big difference inside temperature of the shed. I didn’t want an oven in the summer.
Roger, thank you! I don’t have plans right now to insulate. It’s mostly just for storage. If I was going to be in there for more than a few mins at a time, I would definitely insulate at least the roof.
did you get any moisture between the rigid foam and backside of roof? how did you vent the soffits if you have exposed rafters?
Hi,great build quality. Did you use any sort of seal between the concrete floor and treated bottom plate? I’m about to build a workshop directly on a concrete pad and want to get tips for sealing etc. Thanks
Paul, I silicone caulked around the bottom plate from the inside just to help with insects. I toyed around with the idea of doing the outside too, but started thinking I might trap moisture underneath the plate. Not sure if that would be an issue or not.

Looks awesome, quick question, the last board on the top platte looks like its a little wider than the rest. You can see it at 2:43 mark. Did you just use a 2 x 6 for the last board to create a nice boarder?
Yes I did Aaron, I used a 2x6 so I had a nice clean place to butt my siding up to so it didn’t just stop at the window. I found that was easier to caulk against too, plus it does look nice in my opinion. And thanks for the compliment man!
Really nice design and well built. But it doesn't seem that you cut in any birdsmouth on the beams. The location seems odd too - cna you just build a shed on the main street?
I didn't do birdsmouth cuts on the beams, but I cut wedges and glued them to the top plate after the hurricane ties were in place. If it was a larger structure I might have done it differently. Our zoning rules in my city say I either have to build where my existing shed was, or meet the new setback requirements (which would put the shed way inside my property lines towards the middle of the yard). So I built it where the old one was (which was built before my property was annexed into the city limits). Plus I get to display my work better this way ;)
Great video and I love the way the shed turned out. I’m gonna start mine within the next couple months. It’s gonna be an L shaped building with the exact same design on the windows and roof style. Any more tips or tricks you could give me?
Thank you Tim! First tip would be to check with your local building/planning official and make sure you can build your shed where you want to. Nothing worse than having to tear something down that you spent weeks building! That was the 1st thing I did. 2nd would be to spend a little time and make sure all your lumber is decent and straight. There’s a lot of warped wood in those bundles. I have even taken some back and exchanged it. 3rd would be to plan on ordering materials in advance. The Douglas Fir beams and copper sheet metal I used took a while to come in (and that was before Covid). So might make sure you don’t get stuck at a standstill waiting on materials. Other than that, I would say take your time and enjoy the process. I still stand out in my backyard and stare at mine lol. Would love to see photos/video of yours when it’s done if you think about checking back in!

My windows are actual glass, I just went with 1/8” single pane glass from my local glass supplier. Took my dimensions into them and had them cut them for me. I thought about doing 1/4” but the price was kind of a limiting factor…I had already exhausted my budget on the rest of the build.

I built a shed with these plans from Ryan [ Details Here?> *WoodBlueprints. Com* ] . The instructions were clear and easy to implement. Even a novice can be able to build fast using this plan. I'm happy I bought the plan. It also saved me much cost.
interesting points ,if anyone else trying to find out backyard storage sheds plans try *WoodBlueprints. Com* Ive heard some decent things about it and my colleague got cool success with it.
Put some solar panels on the roof if the its level is facings sun. With a few batteries and an inverter you will use your electrical tools and have light in there.
I would love to do that! Maybe some day ;)

Planning on building a shed myself that will need to be insulated with a minisplit installed. Do you know if the windows you added in would be a good option for keeping the heat/cool in or not? I really like how it lights up the inside the way you did it & am going to likely go that route myself.
Titan, I imagine if you went with insulated glass it would be better than the single pane glass that I used. However, with my shed in particular, it's such a small space that I think it would stay warm enough with a small heater. I would however worry about the upper windows sweating some with the single pane. If you do end up building one, I'd love to see it when it's done if you think to reply back later!

Jason Evans, sorry, I just saw this comment! The siding I used was just vinyl siding they stocked at our local Menards Store, I also used vinyl for the soffit. The roof is Copper colored Pro Panel Metal roofing. The fascia was also copper colored “8’6” Steel L-8 Fascia” that we ordered with the roofing...the Menards SKU# is 1566857. Hope that helps! I am not in the construction industry nor am I a carpenter, I wanted a good guide to help with small projects such as small sheds and some remodeling around the house. So there’s a magic which is Shed Plan [ visit here *WoodBlueprints. Com* ]. This Shed Plan covers all my instructions from top to bottom in a step by step manner.
I like the look of the upper beams, what size size you cut the upright 4x6 beam pieces to make the window openings?
Thank you! The upright beams between the windows are 14” tall. My window openings are 14x32 if that helps

I also like the 2x6 top top plate that allows a stop for the sheathing and base for the risers.
@@TRICITYERIC, The 2x6 top plate made it way easier to finish my sheathing and siding. And starting the job is half the battle lol. That and caulking everything...I don't enjoy the tedious finish work. Framing it was a lot of fun though!

I would have been tempted to frame up a raised floor on the low side to bring it level with the higher one.

Would it improve insulation/heat/cool retention to double pane the glass? or buying picture windows with double pane and argon gas in between as you may lose a lot of the heat/cooling through those single panes?
Yes it would help a lot…this is just a storage shed in my case, if I was going to finish the inside or climate control it, I would have done a lot of things differently.

Potter's Work did you use any kind of vapor barrier? Where those anchor bolts from previous structure? Trying to decide on attachments to slab. Thanks
Todd, the bolts were already there from the previous shed, but I did add a few more. I just used a masonry bit and added some wedge anchors. Are you referring to a vapor barrier between the slab and the bottom plate? If so, I did not use one there, I just have a pressure treated bottom plate.
What size of lumber did you use on top of the walls? 2x6?? I saw a exposed lip above the wrap. I’m assuming to have some overhang for siding. 🤔🤔
Todd Gallagher, yes I capped my 2x4 top plate with a 2x6 so I had something to terminate my siding against. I thought it would look cleaner that way.
