- Today I'm checking out the MiYoo custom firmware for the POWKIDDY v90. I also installed some additional emulators, and something I'm really excited about is a set of PS1 config files that are supposed to improve PS1 performance. Let's give it a good test in a ton of systems and see if it's worth your time and efforts! (Spoiler alert - it is)

Seriously, I love your videos man. You're inspiring me to get back to making videos about portable emulators
Thanks for saying so! You should!!!
Izzy here😳
And you’re inspiring me to get back to writing comments on UA-cam videos about portable emulators
Love the Video. This is the most Informative on the topic of Stock Vs MIYOO firmware Gameplay. Now time to Flash. 😁😁
Also on your PowKiddy v90, if you don't want the slow logo during boot. Simply bring up the directory in the ROOT, see the "boot-logo" file ? Rename it with an exclamation in the beginning.
This does not delete but does rename it to a file that is not being looked for. Then when you boot your PowKiddy v90, it will skip the scrolling logo entirely.
Wow, this is a fantastic video, thank you very much TechDweeb. Great to see the game performance comparisons, it give a real indication of the custom firmware performance compared to the stock firmware.
Overall it's a little boost, but even that little boost helps it handle quite a few more games. I was really surprised at how well the new SNES emulator improved performance. Considering that all you need is an SD card and a bit of time, it's a no brainer.
@@TechDweeb I''m from the UK and love your accent by the way 🙂. If its a free download and it improves the device it is a no brainer. To be honest, I think considering the price, that the V90 and its form factor and performance has to be up there regarding value for money and a must buy for any retro gamer. I'm well happy with it. God bless!!
@@Curryking32000 Agreed 100%. The V90 "bang for the buck$" is my favorite console. Its clamshell design protects the screen. My desire is to improve performance with software and this channel seems to offer a great resource for me/that. Happy Holidays! Peace!
After spending more time messing around with my v90, over clocking it and sum other changes I’ve gotten to really like it. To begin with I was pretty disappointed that snes games don’t emulate that well and I’ve gotten sum of the snes games to play reasonable but after sum changes and custom firmware and the latest emulator firmwares it plays gameboy/gameboy color, gba and sega games very good so I’ve been using it quite a lot
Excellent review. Came here to check back after your comment on my previous post on last vid. Looks great enough if one is getting it for a few 10s of dollars only.
It's an amazing device, for the price
Can't wait to see your other sponsor clips lol I'm dying man 🤣
I have sponsors knocking on my door constantly. They send so many gift baskets I never want to see another chocolate covered almond again.
I just ordered one from Amazon. You sold me on the Quake port in another video
Edit: I just put the CFW on mine and I'm having a blast. Thanks for the super helpful video.
Excellent video! I tried the Miyoo firmware and came to a similar conclusion. The additional options are nice, but not mind-blowing, and I found the new interface a bit award with the up/down/left/right menu navigation, so I stayed with the stock firmware. However, my Q90 didn't have the new dance feature like yours, so maybe I messed up the installation.
The dance feature is an external upgrade. You gotta watch more of my videos until my immaturity rubs off on you :P

Thanks to this boy's mother for making him a sweater! If you were cold, you wouldn't be able to make this useful video! I'm gonna get one so I'm totally gonna wanna do some upgrades
Nice!
You're going to get a sweater and upgrade it? How about the cooling fan mod. Or possibly RGB?
Just ordered one for my daughter and plan on putting the custom firmware on it!
Perfect device for a kid. I gave some to my younger cousins and they play them on the bus every day. Nice not having to worry about them breaking expensive devices, and the fact that it folds means the screen is protected when not in use.
What an awesome video!
I’ve got one of these bad boys coming in the post today. I ordered the black version, Ill b doing a backup of it strait away and then installing this custom firmware on it
I have a question, I've ordered the V90, and it's in the mail, but I'm at present getting the sd card all set up for it, and I was wondering if the custom firmware still has the video player that the stock had? I understand the resolution is 320x240, but I thought it'd be fun to load it up with some nostalgic stuff from the 4:3 era.
Good job on the video.
This firmware is changing this completely awesome
Review Rise of the Triad on v90 please!
good job on the video.. hope your sinus clears soon

Great video and guide! I think between this vid, your original on the v90, and Retro Game Corps' guide, you've convinced me to get get a Powkiddy v90 for daughter later this year. The miyoo firmware looks perfect for her to navigate compared to the original, and it can get her started with some NES and GBA classics to teach her how to game!
Question: can you remove games from the system? Just to slim it down for a kid and remove some of the more violent ones. Thanks!
It's a great device for a kid. It's nice and rugged, the clamshell style means the screen won't get scratched up, and it's not too expensive so if she breaks it or whatever it's not the end of the world!
You can definitely take off games. Just delete them from the ROMs directory on your PC.
@@TechDweeb Perfect! Thanks for the quick and helpful reply -I'm loving the channel and so glad I subscribed
Will removing some ROMs also help with lag or is that purely a built in processor thing?
Will removing some ROMs also help with lag or is that purely a built in processor thing?
Hi, awesome video ! I have a question please : do you know in which folder to put the scrapped images of the roms with this firmware? and in which dimension to do it? I already did it on my game library on my miyoo mini thanks to your other video, can I copy and paste my scrapped images folder to the powkiddy or do I have to start again because of the different size of the images? thanks and sorry for my bad English :)
I don't think you can have custom art with this firmware, unless I'm mistaken?
@@TechDweeb I was hoping this was the case, I seemed to have seen it on other videos but I must have been dreaming :( thanks !
Hmm yeah after receiving my v90 it’s ok. I like the feel of the buttons but as far as it’s performance goes I much rather my miyoo mini v2 which I guess is a bit unfair but I’m not having that as a comparison, just a preference as it’s emulation is much better and the screen looks amazing. The v90 is good for the price tho
BTW someone recently ported scummvm to miyoo, so now you can play all the old adventure games on the v90!
That's awesome!
Be aware the PowKiddy v90, same one I have, can only show 256-colors on the screen at a time. That means games like PS1 and videos like Mp4 and MKV are going to suffer in appearance.
Your best bet is to get the RG-350. PS1 and videos run flawlessly on there with true 24-bit graphics.
Awesome video
Thank you for your kind words, TD.
I did have a technical question as you seem to really know your stuff here.
Is there a handheld system that is low in cost and ONLY runs NES carts - changeable with SD card - AND includes load/save state ability ?
Huh. A handheld system that ONLY runs NES games? Carts? Are you talking about ACTUAL nes game cartridges? I've never heard of such a thing and honestly I'm probably not the right guy to ask, but I LOVE the idea of that and I hope that it exists!
EDIT:
Apparently there is one called the Retro Champ. That's crazy!
@@TechDweeb Hi TD.
No, the Retro Champ uses real cartridges. No fun there.
I've got a little over 10,000 NES carts of every language I've downloaded over the years and wanted a way to have them on the go - so far the PowKiddy does the job for what I wanted which is the NES emulator and load/save state - and that's the main reason I bought it.
As for folks complaining about the SNES not running so well on the PK. I did see the it runs Final Fantasy Mystic Quest quite well though, one of my fav SNES carts.
A26/GB/GBC/GBA and the rest - except for PSX, they run without any issue though.
As for movies, I haven't found one that doesn't desynchronize the audio - sadly.
The RG350 though is a powerhouse for movies though of all kinds Mp4, MPG, MKV, WMV, and AVI with DiVX or XViD - they all run perfect.
V90 will play Sega CD and Turbo Grafx CD so you may want a 64GB or a 128 GB, I had a spare 128GB and I filled up roughly 80% of it, I could fill it up more if i stuffed more Sega CD games on it as i put ALL TG CD on it already.
how would u say the battery life compares to the miyoo mini? i'm not sure which one to get but the clamshell format really appeals to me
I really do love the v90. The clamshell is a great format for portable devices, I wish we had a 'premium' version of the v90. At least the price is right!
@@TechDweeb there is a premium version?
@@travis3567 no he wishes there was a premium v90
Maybe with some hardware tweak the data can be wired to the usb connector allowing to use an external controller
Thank God you changed your voice in your newer videos 😆
Yeah I my 'youtube voice' changed quite a bit as I got more practice. Hard to go back and listen to these old vids tbh.
Just got the black model in the mail today, I have the OG RG350 which is great for 32X, PS1, MAME, Sega CD and the likes, but I'll prolly only put NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, Sega Masters, Genesis, GG, TG16 and maybe Wonderswan, NGP, Atari 2600, 5200, 7800 and the like on it as a secondary Device
Nice! I almost bought the black one myself, but I already have the other two and couldn't justify it although I really wanted to. That version looks great.
Hola, buen video, al hacer los mismos pasos, no me reconoce a mí donde están todas las carpetas room, y nosé dice que no está en uso
So sorry I'm confused does the custom firmware already have games on it when you download it?
You wouldn't happen to know the recommendation on file format resolution, and bitrate for the media player? Tried . Avi 240p at 128 bitrate didn't play right
Not sure, I haven't played around with that, but the official specs list mp4 support, so maybe try an mp4 video at the native 320 x 240 pixels.
@@TechDweeb oh really? Hmm. I only tried avi cuz in the background, when you go to click on the application on the v90 it shows a avi file I'll try mp4.
Hey tech dweeb! I love your videos! I was wondering if you can do a video on how you set up the ps1 at 60fps using the miyoo custom firmware, I tried doing it using the tutorial and got some games to work, but alot of the games listed to rub at 60fps didn't work at all:o or even if you can point me in the direction of another video that goes through it step by step, where to drop bios files, rom names matching the cfg names:)
when you add the custom firmware do the games carry over? also can you add and remove cheats during gameplay
It would be best if you copied the games to your computer, installed the custom firmware, and then copied the games back over to the sd card. I don't think there's a way to do it properly otherwise.
Are you a voice actor because this character is brilliant, lol
Haha thanks! Nope, not an actor, just a weirdo ;)
just one quick question. Once installed the custom firmware, do I need to install games into the SD card? Most of my files are empty after I installed it. If so, where can I install games into the SD card? The pre-installed games have gotten quite boring on the Miyoo custom firmware 1.3.3.
You will have to insert the SD card into your computer and then open the ROMs folder and copy your ROM files for each system into the appropriate folders.
Tech Dweeb has had some seriously character development since this video.
Which color would u feel give the clearest screen, Yellow, Red or Black version, hope u can help👍
Hmmmm. Hard to say, but if I was buying it purely for the best screen quality I would go with the black version since that came out later in the product cycle and there is a better chance you will have a brand new unit with the Black version compared to the older stock of the yellow and red versions. The screen will also likely look sharper if it has a black border instead of a colored border.
Cheers👌
What format would work for ps1 roms? I've tried CHD files but not working. I'm using the miyoo custom firmware
do you need to download the new firmware for v90? mine gets here in a month but would be good if i can just play it how it is
You can totally play it as is right out of the box
I just got one of these for my mom for christmas
Lucky Mama!
@@TechDweeb I gave it to her today because she's sick with the flu and stuck in bed and she loved it!
I was trying to setup custom firmware but I have no idea if I did something wrong or what but windows will not recognize the new micro sd card when it had before. Any help?
Not sure what to suggest, the SD cards that come with these things are sometimes sketchy, it might be dead 😥
@@TechDweeb i figured it out mostly, i have the miyoo cfw, just don’t know how to move the games onto the new micro sd card
any newer cfw?
1.3.3 gPSP had painfully smoll scaled display for GBA, it hurts my eyes >_
Not as far as I can tell. And I would be surprised if development continued to be honest, I doubt there is much more performance that we can squeeze out of this thing. As far as the GBA scaling at least with this version we have the latest updated GPSP with lots of scaling options to choose from.
Can i ask that my old sd card seems kinda slow to load game and i just buy a new sd card that better , can i just copy all the file and save to the new sd card or is there anymore step for me to do it tho ?
Hmmm. Not sure a new card will make it faster to load games, but getting a new high quality card is always a good idea. If you have data on your old card you can either re-flash the OS on your new card (like I show in this video) and then copy over your save files and games. Or you can 'image' your current card (using Win32DiskImager), and then write that image to the new card.
Is there a way to get all 4 sholder buttons to work with PSone games? It would help allot with Odd World and Tomb Raider.
I haven't found a way unfortunately.
Apparently it'll be supported in the next firmware release (1.3.4). So we just have to be patient for the update.
I don't say that for negative your voice is perfect for cartoon
Anyone can explain me how to make work the 100 config files for the ps1 emulator . l doesn’t seem to work for me .
its got a super amoled display though thats why it really pops
Sooo, is the Q20 the same thing, but in a different shell?
Yup
Can anyone create a step-by-step for installing the PS1 config library? People talk about it like it should be straightforward to install but I'm pretty lost.
1. Download the config library (retrogamecorps.files.wordpress.com/2021/03/v90-pcsx-cfg-lib-v1.1.zip)
2. Extract the archive to the root level of your microSD card
3. Make sure your game names exactly match the names of the conifgs in emus/pcsx_rearmed/.pcsx/cfg
4. Make sure you launch the PCSX-Rearmed emulator from the v90 menu (not the original PCSX emulator)
*if you are using bin/cue files instead of PBP files, just be sure to change the name of the .cue file (NOT the .bin file) to the same file name as the ones found in the emus/pcsx_rearmed/.pcsx/cfg folder
@@TechDweeb Excellent, thanks! My microSD card has two partitions, one named "boot" and another named "main", which has several folders, including for roms. Which partition should I be extracting to?
Got mine for 33 total during this recent back to school sale
tbh it kinda sucks that it's 2022 and it can't run some SNES games properly, even if it's just $40
do you think the 64gb is worth it if I don't intend playing PS1 games?
great video!
Nah, 32gb is plenty for non ps1. I have 32 GB in most of my devices this size and it can hold all the 16-bit era games as well as a few ps1
Got mine for 12$. Waaaay worth it
Does the new firmware have a videoplayer?
Thanks TechDweeb's mom for getting him the sweater.
I can’t get the “main” file on the sd card. I just get “ boot h” and not “main h” I followed every step and nothing. What am I doing wrong. Please help. I formatted the card I did everything.
Can you answer me? I just buyed one, but my question is that can it vibrate/rumble? thanks!
Can't wait for mine to arrive! I ordered 4 of them 😂. I have three kids😂 I get one too 😂
My main suggestion for kids is that you trim down the rom list. Kids get overwhelmed easily by having too many choices, and they get frustrated easily when they turn on a game and find out it's not very fun. Trim the systems down to the top 10 or 20 games and they'll enjoy it a lot more ;)
@@TechDweeb great advice! This won't be there first device though. I got them trained 😂 my 8 year old can even download roms and format 😂
Is there a way to access the SD card on your PC through the charging cable without removing the SD card from the device?
I have not found a way.
First of all: CONGRATS FOR YOUR GREAT WORK! Have you ever tested ps1 soccer games? I loved them-especially ISS Pro Evolution- BUT i couldn't find someone who has tested any of them on the v90..Hope u will find time to do so and perhaps let me know if it is playable..Once again thank you

It's not the best, but it's still the best (only) clamshell, so it's a winner for me. And the battery is swappable (common BL-5C).
Got one for my kids and getting a second for myself.
Really hope another clamshell comes out, I don't care for any of the other styles. Got a Retroid Pocket 3+ and don't even play it.
I agree. We NEED another decent clamshell. It'd do so well, it kinda blows my mind that more companies aren't bothering with this form factor :/
@@TechDweeb Agreed, especially given the amount of love for the original GB form factor (and somewhat GBA or Switch clones).
I tried to install customer firmware but the sd card doesn't work properly. And has now ruined my console... does anyone sell the original sd cards or custom firmware cards working ?
Your console is still fine, it's just the SD card that's been ruined. You can use any SD card buy a new one from amazon, flash the firmware, copy your games, and you'll be good to go. Good luck!
does anyone know how to install other emulators to this console?
Just wondering when you will do more pc videos
Most of the videos I have in the list of videos I want to make are PC videos, more coming very soon!
@@TechDweeb nice
Anyone have the issue where "extend" is greyed out when right clicking on "main"
Not sure what you're referring to here?
@@TechDweeb Did some research basically it sounds like the partitions have to be next to each other? Which they are if they mean that the partition are actually next to each other in disk partition. I went to a different computer and I had the same issue. I am not sure why I am having this issue before anyone else I used the below method to make it work. Note this method has its risks including data corruption etc. The software seems legit because they also have a Wikipedia which is a good sign I think that software is on the up and up
I had to use third-party software mini partition wizard to actually extend the unallocated volume. I used the free version which is enough to make this work luckily. Obviously make sure you don’t install the other software they try to sneak in during set up and also there is a risk of data corruption etc. with this method but it worked for me just fine!
It's not letting me add roms the folder does not show for adding roms only the boot file shows on PC with sd
It probably doesn't have a drive letter assigned. If you use "Disk Management" (right click the start button in win 10), find the partition on the SD card in the list of drives and then right click on it and select "Change Drive Letter", and then pick a drive letter that isn't being used on your PC - I'd suggest "T:" for TechDweeb ;)
@@TechDweeb I was up until 2am and figured that out 🤣 as soon as I assigned it to a letter drive it worked

Is it possible to burn the custom firmware to the SD card and don't do anything else?
Yeah I don't see why not. Although if you don't copy your games etc over then you'll have a pretty empty device. You don't need the other stuff like the updated emulators and PS1 configs, those are optional.
Does the powkiddy play 'Castlevania SotN' on the PS1? I want to get one for a friend for her birthday and she loves that game.
As far as audiobooks go, some of us have super boring jobs and audiobooks make them tolerable. I'd definitely be reading books on paper at work if I could, but doing so would probably result in multiple deaths, including my own, since I drive for a living.

So can you hide the systems you don't want to use in the menu on this firmware? For simplicity and all. I'm trying to set one up with only Nintendo systems and that's it.
You can delete the consoles from a folder on the SD card.
Can you still save your progress with the new firmware?

Miyoo is good for PS1 but it did something to my Neogeo games. Now the Neogeo games don’t launch. SNES starfox 2 still not working which…eh ok, but I’m running Gran Turismo 2 and yet Metal Slug, Windjammers, Starfox 2, not working.
Pico-8, still not working. Got close on Snow for pico8 but it freezes on title, everything else throws me back to main screen, kinda want to go back to default firmware now.
That's strange about your neo geo games. Mine work fine. Maybe try downloading a new Neo Geo rom set?
@@TechDweeb I’m thinking that or grabbing the originals from the included SD card and seeing what’s different. Maybe different zip ratios can’t be done on a handheld like this but a pi4 breezes through them so I never noticed? I did have some success on final burn, but it’s half speed. Found the stock NX Hope firmware, might rollback to that if I’m trading a handful of ps1 games for all the metal slugs.
Accidentally deleted the emulator section. I copied all the emulators back in. How can I relink them manually, without having to go through the entire process from the beginning?
No idea. I'd just re-flash the image in that case, probably easier to copy your games and save games and start fresh rather than try to mess around with getting the emulators to work again.
@@TechDweeb After a bit of reading up on the subject on a few subreddits, I think this might be the best idea. I still have all my save files and roms, so I'll just back those up and use them with a fresh reinstall of the firmware.
I'm a bit jumpy because my Pokémon save is over 20 hours at this point.
@@TechDweeb Update: I backed up my ROMs and save files, formatted the card, went through the installation process again, copied my ROMs and saves to the card, booted up my V90, and the save worked perfectly 😍

Hi, good video!!!. But, can you please explain, how to update (how to do they say in retrogame corps) the emus, beta version of fceux (NES) and Gambatte ones?. Please, if you can, do this for beguiners as me (only a vet🤔 by now here, my friend). What about add bios files and other tips in retrogame corps? Place to read how and why to do all this. Yes here a beginer, friend...Thx in advance
Thanks! I don't think I can explain it any more plainly than RetroGameCorps does in his guide (retrogamecorps.com/2021/02/01/review-powkiddy-v90/). It's under the "update certain emulators" section. I didn't bother with the bios files, except the PS1 bios files listed in the PCSX-REARMED CONFIG library readme. I also didn't bother with any of the RetroArch or NeoGeo stuff from the guide. Just the extra emulators and the PCSX configs, but all of that is entirely optional to be honest, you will get by just fine with the default MiYoo firmware. Good luck!
@@TechDweeb thank you, dear, I do suscribe you😃
"yeah man i wanna do it"
Can you please please do me a small favor? Test Tomb Raider (the very first one or second one) PlayStation and let me know if this works. Or can anyone tell me? That’s the only reason I would update the custom firmware as I’m afraid to do this (not familiar with this type of stuff only adding games). It would mean the world to me if anyone could do that. Or at least tell me what runs well ps1 on original firmware or new firmware.
I just tested it, I couldn't get it working. Crashes after the main menu. Maybe there is a version of the game and a version of the emulator that works but my quick test says no.
Most ps1 games do work well though fwiw.

I just tried it on my V90 with the custom firmware. It was a little rough with frame drops here and there, so I set the frame skip to one and it runs around 60 fps most of the time. It's definitely playable and the sound is good.
@@gregmillhand9697 I appreciate the answer but in the end I decided to take an android telescopic controller, I kinda like it, it feels similar to when I had psp when I was a kid.
I've been thinking of getting one for my father
It's great to buy for gifts because it's so affordable and user friendly!
How do European ps1 games fare? They’re designed around 50fps
Definitely a good idea to stick to 50fps games where possible.
