An analytical approach to correctly diagnosing a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 with a no start condition. The ATS eSCAN ELITE and the eSCOPE ELITE are both used for the diagnosis.
Great diagnosis and explanation, your use of the scope to explain the theory is exceptional. This is one of those jobs where the garage said "since we did......" you could almost guarantee what the fault was. Proving it beyond doubt and explaining it in minutes is a skill few have. 🏆 Thanks for sharing.
Bernie is the Master diagnostician. Great explanation & step by step procedures with the best scope out there. I haven't seen anybody doing this kind of diagnostics with Pico scope or other scope and with explanation. This way you get better with your Escope & you learn how to use it efficiently. Thanks Bernie.

IF you do the classes when they're live you get them discounted and after the class ends with them you'll always have access to the videos Once they post then a few days after the class ends. The also have follow along manuals so you can take notes, etc. It's in the form of PDF file and generally anywhere from 100 to 250+ pages. I only print using my laser printer but then you have to either protect and hole punch the sheets, sleeve them or have spiral binding equipment which I got lucky from buying some before I started doing it. Spiral binding punches aren't cheap either.
I paused and replayed this video probably 15 times. Looking at the waveforms & trying to make a call on the problem before you told us. Good fun and hugely educational. Thanks teacher🤔😉👍
A very common problem with swapping in a used engine, as soon as you stated engine swap, I knew the problem was CKP or CMP reluctor issue with the sound of the engine trying to start. Happy that the old engine was still available. Thanks so much, Bernie.
I feel that I learn something on each video. I would like to c u actually doing the hook ups. R u piercing or back probing. Knowing how and where to get the signals is crucial. Now one of my favorite channels. When Bernie talks, we listen!!
I have the 4 ch with the e scan. Don't work in shop but self learning. Biggest problem is I don't play with it every day. The e-scan and iea also has a deep learning curve. I have the 4 ch version. I'm working towards using it more often but still not quite there. I've got a plan in the works as it's part of a bigger plan. I get capturing the waveforms, hookups but interpretation of the data, e-scan data and iea data is what baffles me as the tools ATS sells can do quite a bit. I'd love to just ride around with Bernie free of charge for a week or two for some hands on training. Heck if he sends me a plane ticket and has a office with a cot or spare bedroom I'd be very grateful given the cost of the tool.
@@dtnel Check out Voltage Drop Diagnostics. He has some really cool vids. One in particular is about a Toyota V-6 that had misfires and no one could diagnose. He used an in cylinder pressure transducer and determined the problem fairly quickly. The Gadget’s Playlist has a very affordable version on one of his recent vids.
Thank you, Bernie. Every single video you post teaches me an incredible amount of information, techniques and most importantly THE THOUGHT PROCESS that you have mastered. Best regards to you, Bernie.
Because shops probably hire him to come in and do this TYPE of diagnostic work while they keep cranking out high dollar per hour work. Advanced diagnostics is based on the tech knowing their diagnostic strategy. This can consume alot of time but properly trained you can make money on this type of work. You just diagnose it and move onto the next vehicle or shop and don't even do a repair as these shops hire you to come in and diagnose and leave. IF these shops want to be trained in this work they'll hire someone like Bernie or Brandon Steckler to come in and train their employees in the evening or weekends. This also allows shops to hire guys with less experience and have a buffer.
@@dtnel oh I would be over there watching and asking questions regardless of what gravy I had in front of me. This knowledge and watching of a live case study is invaluable.
Amazing. I don't know if the normal auto maintenance or repair shop does all this, b/c I keep having to take my car back. I wish I knew how to find someone with this experience at a local shop. Great information.
Another great video and you are definetly an expert in this field. But if you can kindly move a bit slower in why you are connecting to what so we, the less experienced, can better understand your approach, that would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot for your effort.
I never use it I don't have one 😓but now I know I need to get one looks so easy ...can you yell me which one to get please because the cars in Jamaica give lots of trouble because of the climate and the bad gas . Thanks a bro good teaching 👍
So why did the one sprocket have one mark and the other one had three. I'm assuming it's a replacement engine from the same make and model but maybe a different year? On a side note I don't know about Mazda but a lot of GM vehicles including the ones I used to work on, you are supposed to do a crankshaft relearn anytime you change something related to the reluctor wheel, PCM or crankshaft sensor.
Mazda did the same thing with the 2.3 engines from 2004 to 2005. The wheel was no longer on the gear but on the cam itself. Then in 2006 they changed the number of teeth on the cam timing wheel.

Hi Steve! I guessed it was low on fuel pressure from how it was trying to start...but that was a crazy variable!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Ivan, any chance the ECU have been reprogrammed to the different gear? like an adaptive cam/crank relearn..
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics it certainly was mate, hope you're well, enjoyed your latest today 👍

I love these videos. I swear 99% of the time the previous shop cleared codes. I know bernies just itching to use that scope regardless
Thanks for sharing Bernie... Cheers.

👍
Why didn't you do an easy relative compression test..?
Mine had coil issues and tripped the check engine light and poor running condition
Jdm engine that why's different
Dr Phil?!!!!
Without seeing the video, let me guess, swapped plugs. Quick and dirty check for rpm signal at ecm with diag, no scope needed for this test.
Welp.. not quite.
