We took a road trip in Ireland and Northern Ireland and the driving took a bit to get used to! Many of the things we wanted to see were off the beaten path, so driving was a good choice for us. In Paris and London it was strictly public transit. We love your videos!

Obviously accommodations are the biggest daily expense…i budget $250USD-$300 / day for travel. A video on how you go about this would be good…I think you both move a bit faster so curious how you do it…maybe you already have that video out…I also subscribed to you and love the website content…it’s been helpful!

Great advice! I like DIY travel too. I did a two week safari with my daughter for $1,000. We stayed in a youth hostel in Kenya, hired a local tour guide. He came with a 4x4 and a driver/chef. We camped in the wilderness and the chef cooked for us. We saw the great migration and had unforgettable close encounters with predators. The best DIY trip I have ever done.
Like you, I am retired and love to travell. Started my solo travels in 2001 and planned all of them myself, chosing the places to visit, booking hotels and airlines. We're just back home from Japan today, arrived off our flight back at our apartment at 0415 early this morning after having a full month there. Half our time and travel was covered by a JR rail pass the last half was 16 days on two Princess cruises around Japan back to back. Though weve been there several times before, this is the first time we'd used local buses, forced to because of flooding on some sections of the rail system and unexpected journey cancellations, due to the typhoon just gone through, the local bus was great, simple to do and certainly on our horizons for our next visit. We only use backpacks on our travels, and this trip we found the old ones we bought many years ago are getting a bit past it and starting to come apart. A while back you were talking about packing, in that video you mentioned a certain type/brand of backpack you have and had a lot of success with, could you please tell me the brand name please. Osprey is on sale at REI for Labor Day. I saved big on the female specific Fairview 40. The day pack that comes with the 55 has a lifting handle that makes it very uncomfortable so I did not get it, but found my THULE day pack could easily be attached to the Fairview and the colors played well together too. Osprey have a Lifetime warranty so if you break it they will repair it or replace it. I have 5 different Osprey backpacks and a shopping type bag. I have passed on 4 backpacks because I upgraded to female specific bags. 10 years ago I looked at my sister's 85L Osprey backpacks and said I will never own one of those behemoths... now they are all Ospreys or REI... best wishes on finding your perfect travel backpack or backpacks.

I love to travel, we left the U S in 2012 went to England ( where I'm from) then on to Spain rented an apartment and traveled Europe. Came back to the US in 2019. We are now on the move again. As soon as our house sells we are starting our travels again. Starting with Panama. I ordered the backpack from your website and just waiting for my husband's to arrive. Great video! I also generally book my flights on Wednesdays for the same reasons you gave. WhatsApp is absolutely essential. It's really the standard way everyone communicates around the world. Public transportation is so much better in other countries than in most of the US. And generally very affordable. But in Southeast Asia it's just as cheap to take a Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber), so I've found myself doing that more often. One of the challenges I've found with nomadic travel is learning how to eat so that you don't, (1) break the bank and (2) gain too much weight. I've adopted the same strategy of having only two meals a day. And if I feel a little hungry later in the day, I have some fruit for a snack...or an occasional gelato. lol

We only rented a car to go to sienna from Tuscany, because we weren't able to locate a bus to get us there. The drive there was great, GPS on the way back, lost its mind, we were 2 tracking through vineyards, it was crazy ,and took twice as long. We loved the trains ,busses, trolleys, and subways. We only wish that the US had cross country trains that are as reliable as the ones in Europe. 😊
Another great choice is a low cost bus company called Flix Bus,reliable and cheaper than taking trains,the only downside is that a lot of time the pick up spot is just outside the cities but other than that ,highly recommended

I cannot agree with you more about not renting a car, especially where they drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Hubby insisted on renting a car in the UK and Scotland for 3 weeks a few years ago, and it was terribly unnerving. We never did get used to it. I'm still not over it, 😆. Never again. Never. It is trial and error. We start looking about a year in advance. We use google flights and and just try various cities outside the US. We may even change our initial destination if we find a great flight in the area. Being retired, we have flexibility with starting and ending points, along with destinations. Great tips! On the ATM withdrawals we usually just decline the conversion that is offered. The vast majority of time the foreign banks will still process the transaction and then Schwab (or whichever bank your ATM card is associated with) will run the conversion at a much better rate.
Yes, totally agree. Wise is a lot effective to save in exchange local currencies, and to use everywhere as a normal Visa. Mind that you have very careful when you apply for it. Sometimes they do not approve for unknown reason...but after communicating with them they will release your card. I try Revolut card as well, but Wise is a lot cheaper with exchanges. Also, Wise allows you to withdraw local currency once a month without a fee. But for big items, like tickets, I will use my rewards credit cards to do not loose the points. Goods travels!
Regarding the flight from Orlando to Columbia to New Zealand. How did you search and find this flight? Expedia, google flights etc? It's great to know these travel hacks, but the devil is in the details!
We typically use google flights for find flights and then book directly with the airlines. We use trial and error and pick a variety of cities in central and south america and hunt for bargains. We have been fortunate to find some ones, but you have to be flexible. The flight we took had a 7-hour layover in Santiago, but we were fine with that. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

Thank you for sharing your travel hacks. I learned some new things I hadn't considered, such as transferring credit card points to hotel points. I also hadn't considered flying through different airports to make the overall journey less expensive, like your trip to New Zealand. Completely agreed on flying at least business class for the long flights, as we are both 6' tall. The 12+ hour trip from Hong Kong to San Francisco was much more comfortable! Safe travels!! --M

Agree with all your points. Thanks for the final reminder - no debt. We strive to live a debt free life and are able to feel free during retirement. My son and his girlfriend were given an offer at the gate to upgrade to first class by paying an additional fee from Zurich to the State. They said it is worth every single penny and will do it again. Thank you for sharing your vlogs and preparing us for retirement travel. Four months till retirement.

Excellent advice! I never heard of the bonus flights! I’m so cheap…always sign up for hotel reward programs and we too use the Chase card. Recently we stayed 4 nights in Niagara Falls using our IHG points saving over $1,200. Just 3 weeks ago on our trip, we too had our card hacked and chase was right there for us, Apple Pay is great! I travel a lot also. I usually stay a month or more in a particular city. From there I take public transportation and do day trips from there…easy to do in Europe. I am taking a cruise along the west coast of South America and to Antarctica and then end up in Buenos Aires, where I am staying a month or so! Have you tried AI to plan any trips yet?

Some websites say that 1.5 month or so lead time can get a good deal. Based on your extensive booking experiences, I wonder what is the good lead time to book international flights?
Thanks so much. We have seen various "ideal" times to book on different websites. We've seen 3 weeks, up to 4 months and even 12 months out. We start looking about a year out and try to find good deals for our long haul flights. We think the key is willingness to try to different cities to fly from and to even more than the exact timing. This is just based on our trial and error searching. We stay flexible and will even change our destinations if we get a great deal and just start our adventure at that location. Sorry for the confusion. When you go to a restaurant, you have the option of paying in local currency or USD. If you choose local, you get the exchange rate from your credit card. Great stuff guys. Couldn’t agree more about low cost countries. Romania is a beautiful place with very friendly people. Even with inflation. Also agree about day trips. We are in Switzerland visiting our kids (not a budget friendly country) but day trips in many countries is by far the cheapest way to go. Will have to check in on the transatlantic cruises.

Another plus of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is that it is one of the very few cards that still has the $28 Priority Pass airport restaurant dining credit at select locations. (Amex dropped this perk.) I was shocked to learn that Little Rock's Clinton National Airport has no lounge (!), but supposedly there is a restaurant there that accepts the $28 Priority Pass dining credit. I'll find out for sure in a few weeks. If you are at a larger airport whose lounge is full or crowded or the food is unappealing, sitting in a restaurant eating $28 of hot food for free is a great option to have.
Thank you for another great video. I much prefer public transportation to driving even in the USA. Amtrak has delivered me to and from the Pacific Crest Trail many times and I live over 1200 miles from the trail. Yes Amtrak has an issue with being on time but you just make allowances for that and enjoy the journey. Treat people with respect and kindness and even if they are having a rough day, they will be kind back 99% of the time. Even in less than optimal situations a smile will relieve tension and stress for the person smiling. Thank you again for creating this helpful video.

what a great video! another tip - I also land up saving up on unnecessary expenses like atm fees etc abroad - using apps like ATM Fee Saver - it helps find atms with no fees or lower fees than others along with withdrawal limits etc. worth adding to your list of tricks!
Oh my goodness! That's the answer! We probably need to do this, it would certainly be healthier. Just don't know if we could do it; however, we forgot to eat one night and we just decided to skip dinner since it was so late. We survived, so there might be hope for us. John & Bev
@@RetirementTravelers healthier lifestyle. Most of the time we eat breakfast lunch and dinner are out of “habit” and is not because we are hungry. Eat less is always better than overeating. Eat less live healthier and save $$ 👍😀
@RetirementTravelers I second intermittent fasting. Sounds like you already do this. By eating breakfast at the hotel and your second meal within 6 hours you are done. Healthy to live this way… just move to it gradually (keep moving your second meal earlier) and you won’t have a problem, as long as you are healthy. You are just training your body to burn fat rather than sugar. Great health benefits. I do it the other way (skipping breakfast) but really fasting end of day is much healthier.
Yes, that's what we did. Our first-class flight from Colombia to New Zealand was much cheaper, by half what we would have paid from Orlando. The flight to Colombia is a breeze, too!
In this video, you mention checking flights from everywhere. How do you do that? I'm pretty good at finding flight bargains and use Google Flights but you can't leave your originating flight blanks. For example if flying to Berlin, you can't leaving the originating town empty which makes doing what you suggested difficult. Hoping you guys see this and are able to provide some guidance.
Just pick different originating cities outside the US. We look for business class bargains and keep searching until we find 2 cities we would love to visit and fits into our plans. We can connect the dots to those places with cheaper economy tickets and extend our journey. As retirees, we have a lot of flexibility with locations, layovers, etc to get bargains. Hope this helps. We're just back home from Japan today, arrived off our flight back at our apartment at 0415 early this morning after having a full month there. Half our time and travel was covered by a JR rail pass the last half was 16 days on two Princess cruises around Japan back to back. Though weve been there several times before, this is the first time we'd used local buses, forced to because of flooding on some sections of the rail system and unexpected journey cancellations, due to the typhoon just gone through, the local bus was great, simple to do and certainly on our horizons for our next visit.
We only use backpacks on our travels, and this trip we found the old ones we bought many years ago are getting a bit past it and starting to come apart.
A while back you were talking about packing, in that video you mentioned a certain type/brand of backpack you have and had a lot of success with, could you please tell me the brand name please. Thanks for the ever helpful videos.

Osprey is on sale at REI for Labor Day. I saved big on the female specific Fairview 40. The day pack that comes with the 55 has a lifting handle that makes it very uncomfortable so I did not get it, but found my THULE day pack could easily be attached to the Fairview and the colors played well together too. Osprey have a Lifetime warranty so if you break it they will repair it or replace it. I have 5 different Osprey backpacks and a shopping type bag. I have passed on 4 backpacks because I upgraded to female specific bags. 10 years ago I looked at my sister's 85L Osprey backpacks and said I will never own one of those behemoths... now they are all Ospreys or REI... best wishes on finding your perfect travel backpack or backpacks.
How do you get a new credit card delivered to you if you are on move?
If you have your credit card set up on Apple Pay, they will immediately update your Apple Pay with the new card. It is awesome. Otherwise we wouldn't get it for several months.

I love to travel, we left the U S in 2012 went to England ( where I'm from) then on to Spain rented an apartment and traveled Europe. Came back to the US in 2019. We are now on the move again. As soon as our house sells we are starting our travels again. Starting with Panama. I ordered the backpack from your website and just waiting for my husband's to arrive. Great video! I also generally book my flights on Wednesdays for the same reasons you gave. WhatsApp is absolutely essential. It's really the standard way everyone communicates around the world. Public transportation is so much better in other countries than in most of the US. And generally very affordable. But in Southeast Asia it's just as cheap to take a Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber), so I've found myself doing that more often. One of the challenges I've found with nomadic travel is learning how to eat so that you don't, (1) break the bank and (2) gain too much weight. I've adopted the same strategy of having only two meals a day. And if I feel a little hungry later in the day, I have some fruit for a snack...or an occasional gelato. lol

We only rented a car to go to sienna from Tuscany, because we weren't able to locate a bus to get us there. The drive there was great, GPS on the way back, lost its mind, we were 2 tracking through vineyards, it was crazy ,and took twice as long. We loved the trains ,busses, trolleys, and subways. We only wish that the US had cross country trains that are as reliable as the ones in Europe. 😊

Another great choice is a low cost bus company called Flix Bus,reliable and cheaper than taking trains,the only downside is that a lot of time the pick up spot is just outside the cities but other than that ,highly recommended
Long haul flight question: how did you search for the trip to New Zealand? Did you just know to search Columbia or did you use a specific site?
For New Zealand, we just tried various cities in Central and South America and got lucky on that one. We booked it a full year in advance.

I cannot agree with you more about not renting a car, especially where they drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Hubby insisted on renting a car in the UK and Scotland for 3 weeks a few years ago, and it was terribly unnerving. We never did get used to it. I'm still not over it, 😆. Never again. Never. How do you search for “cheap” business/first class flights, such as your East Coast to New Zealand flights?
It is trial and error. We start looking about a year in advance. We use google flights and and just try various cities outside the US. We may even change our initial destination if we find a great flight in the area. Being retired, we have flexibility with starting and ending points, along with destinations.
We got lucky on one from Bogota to Auckland, traveling through Santiago, Chile.

Great tips! On the ATM withdrawals we usually just decline the conversion that is offered. The vast majority of time the foreign banks will still process the transaction and then Schwab (or whichever bank your ATM card is associated with) will run the conversion at a much better rate.

Yes, totally agree. Wise is a lot effective to save in exchange local currencies, and to use everywhere as a normal Visa. Mind that you have very careful when you apply for it. Sometimes they do not approve for unknown reason...but after communicating with them they will release your card. I try Revolut card as well, but Wise is a lot cheaper with exchanges. Also, Wise allows you to withdraw local currency once a month without a fee. But for big items, like tickets, I will use my rewards credit cards to do not loose the points. Goods travels!

Regarding the flight from Orlando to Columbia to New Zealand. How did you search and find this flight? Expedia, google flights etc? It's great to know these travel hacks, but the devil is in the details!
We typically use google flights for find flights and then book directly with the airlines. We use trial and error and pick a variety of cities in central and south america and hunt for bargains. We have been fortunate to find some ones, but you have to be flexible. The flight we took had a 7-hour layover in Santiago, but we were fine with that.

I also hadn't considered flying through different airports to make the overall journey less expensive, like your trip to New Zealand. My son and his girlfriend were given an offer at the gate to upgrade to first class by paying an additional fee from Zurich to the State. Can you explain a bit more the apple pay situation with your new credit card? How did you get the new information to update on your apple pay without actually having the card in hand?
We had the old credit card registered on Apple Pay. Chase notified us of fraudulent activity and we cancelled it. After talking with them on the phone, the new CC number showed up on Apple Pay immediately. It was wonderful.

Excellent advice! I never heard of the bonus flights! I’m so cheap…always sign up for hotel reward programs and we too use the Chase card. Recently we stayed 4 nights in Niagara Falls using our IHG points saving over $1,200. Just 3 weeks ago on our trip, we too had our card hacked and chase was right there for us, Apple Pay is great! I travel a lot also. I usually stay a month or more in a particular city. From there I take public transportation and do day trips from there…easy to do in Europe. I am taking a cruise along the west coast of South America and to Antarctica and then end up in Buenos Aires, where I am staying a month or so!

Some websites say that 1.5 month or so lead time can get a good deal. Based on your extensive booking experiences, I wonder what is the good lead time to book international flights?
Thanks so much. We have seen various "ideal" times to book on different websites. We've seen 3 weeks, up to 4 months and even 12 months out. We start looking about a year out and try to find good deals for our long haul flights. We think the key is willingness to try to different cities to fly from and to even more than the exact timing. This is just based on our trial and error searching.
We stay flexible and will even change our destinations if we get a great deal and just start our adventure at that location.

In "Mind Your Money" , I don't j understand how the bank paying the exchange fees means you are paying local $ and not paying US$
Sorry for the confusion. When you go to a restaurant, you have the option of paying in local currency or USD. If you choose local, you get the exchange rate from your credit card. If you choose USD, you will get an exchange rate that is not as favorable as your credit card. Always choose local currency. Hope this clarifies.

Great stuff guys. Couldn’t agree more about low cost countries. Romania is a beautiful place with very friendly people. Even with inflation. Also agree about day trips. We are in Switzerland visiting our kids (not a budget friendly country) but day trips in many countries is by far the cheapest way to go.
Will have to check in on the transatlantic cruises.

Another plus of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is that it is one of the very few cards that still has the $28 Priority Pass airport restaurant dining credit at select locations. (Amex dropped this perk.) I was shocked to learn that Little Rock's Clinton National Airport has no lounge (!), but supposedly there is a restaurant there that accepts the $28 Priority Pass dining credit. I'll find out for sure in a few weeks. If you are at a larger airport whose lounge is full or crowded or the food is unappealing, sitting in a restaurant eating $28 of hot food for free is a great option to have.
That is a great perk. We have used in Baltimore (BWI) because there is no lounge.

Thank you for another great video. I much prefer public transportation to driving even in the USA. Amtrak has delivered me to and from the Pacific Crest Trail many times and I live over 1200 miles from the trail. Yes Amtrak has an issue with being on time but you just make allowances for that and enjoy the journey. Treat people with respect and kindness and even if they are having a rough day, they will be kind back 99% of the time. Even in less than optimal situations a smile will relieve tension and stress for the person smiling. Thank you again for creating this helpful video.

what a great video! another tip - I also land up saving up on unnecessary expenses like atm fees etc abroad - using apps like ATM Fee Saver - it helps find atms with no fees or lower fees than others along with withdrawal limits etc. worth adding to your list of tricks!

Oh my goodness! That's the answer! We probably need to do this, it would certainly be healthier. Just don't know if we could do it; however, we forgot to eat one night and we just decided to skip dinner since it was so late. We survived, so there might be hope for us. John & Bev
@@RetirementTravelers healthier lifestyle. Most of the time we eat breakfast lunch and dinner are out of “habit” and is not because we are hungry. Eat less is always better than overeating. Eat less live healthier and save $$ 👍😀
@RetirementTravelers I second intermittent fasting. Sounds like you already do this. By eating breakfast at the hotel and your second meal within 6 hours you are done. Healthy to live this way… just move to it gradually (keep moving your second meal earlier) and you won’t have a problem, as long as you are healthy. You are just training your body to burn fat rather than sugar. Great health benefits. I do it the other way (skipping breakfast) but really fasting end of day is much healthier.

Hi Bev n John, great content. Did u fly to Columbia then 1st class from there to NZ? If yes, that was much cheaper?
Yes, that's what we did. Our first-class flight from Colombia to New Zealand was much cheaper, by half what we would have paid from Orlando. The flight to Colombia is a breeze, too!
In this video, you mention checking flights from everywhere. How do you do that? I'm pretty good at finding flight bargains and use Google Flights but you can't leave your originating flight blanks. For example if flying to Berlin, you can't leaving the originating town empty which makes doing what you suggested difficult. Hoping you guys see this and are able to provide some guidance.
Just pick different originating cities outside the US. We look for business class bargains and keep searching until we find 2 cities we would love to visit and fits into our plans. We can connect the dots to those places with cheaper economy tickets and extend our journey. As retirees, we have a lot of flexibility with locations, layovers, etc to get bargains. Hope this helps.
